Description

N. B. COOPER.
Wagon-Bbdy.
Patented Mar. 10, 18 63.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
N. B. COOPER, OF GRATIS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BODIES.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NB. (JoOlDER, of Gratis, in the county of Preble and State of Ohio, have inven ted certain new and useful Improveinents in Wagon-Bodies; and I hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being` had to the acconipanying drawings, and to the letters of reference Inarked thereon.
The object of my invention is the construction of a wagon-body which from the arrangeinent ot' its parts nlay be adapted by slig'ht alterations to the conveyance of wheat, straw, hay, fodder7 and Indian eorn, husked or unhusked, thus pert'orniing the offices usually requiring two or more separate wagon-bodies.
Figure 1 in the drawing's represents a perspective view of the wagon-body, and Fig. 2 an inside plan view of one ot' the ends of said. body.
The letter D in Fig. l designates the sides of the frame upon which the body rests, and consists ot' scantling of suitable size and streng'th fitted near the ends into the crossties E E. The sides D D and the cross ties E E inter-lock at the points a af, and are held in position by the braces A A on the outer and b b on the inner side.
G G are the corner stanchions, to which the braces A A and b b are fastened by one or more screws. These stanchions rest at bottom against the outer side of D, and lean outward as far as need ful to give the proper shape to the body.
- The lower ends of the braces A A and b b are secured to E E by iron screws, which pass through both braces and through the supports d d, binding the whole firmly together.
The supports d d are intended to sustain the planks that form the bottoln ot' the wagon-bed.
f f are parallel slats nailed to b suificiently far apart to adm'it a plank, which fills up the space between D and O.
In order to insert the additional plank, slip itin between the slatsffafter O is removed, and then return O again-to its proper place.
T T bind the corner stanchions together, and have grooves cut in them to receive the side planks, H H. The braees c care fastened to the inside of end pieces, L L, leaving a space between them and b b for a plank, the edge of which rests on a shoulder in c.
The body is adapted to its different otfices by the following' niodes of adjustment.: By reinoving the side-boards H H it is fitted for hauling straw, fodder, &c. To adapt the body for corn increase the width of L either by putting in a single board to fill the space between the ties d and T, or else by fitt-ing the space between them with separate pieces then cover the bottom with planks resting` on d d, and the object is effected.
Having thus described my invention7 what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent., is-
The ends of the wagon-body, as herein fully set forth and deseribed, in combination with the frame D and the side pieces, H and O, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimonyI that I adopt the foregoing as my own I hereby aflix my name in the presence of two witnesses.
N. B. COOPER.
