SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,485, dated February 28, 1888.
Application filed October l0, 1887. Serial No. 251,893. (Xo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Geenen Wieeins, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Bradley and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Tops; and I do declareuthe following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buggy-tops; and it consists in a buggy-top constructed to open and shut by means of levers and rods from the inside of said top, the object of my invention being to open and close a buggy-top from the inside without the operator reaching around to the outside of the top to move the joints forward and back. I attain this object by means of the peculiar' construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, which will be more fully pointed out and described in the specification and claim, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application and forming part of the same,in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Similar letters referto like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a buggy-seat, to which is secured the bows or frame ofthe top B in the usual manner, the front joints, C, being secured at each end to the front bows of the top and jointed in thc center. The rear side joints, D, are secured at one end to the center bow of the top, and their opposite endsare loosely secured to a rod, E, that extends across the top of the hack part of the seat A. Said rod is held in place by clips a, that are secured to the bach oi' the seat by screw-bolts or otherwise. An auriliary or acting rod, F, is loosely held under the same clips, a, (or separately, as desired,) and to the outer ends of the same are rigidly secured the inner ends of curved extensionrods G'. Said rods extend outward in line with joints D, and their outer ends are formed with curved hook-shaped extensions b. Said hooks encircle the joints l) on the rear half the same.
Hand-levers H are rigidly secured by their inner ends to the loosely-rotating rod F near its outer ends, but in such a position that they will project forward on the inside of the buggy-top, and wh en the top is raised will lie close to the side rails or arms of the seat A, the purpose of this construction being to raise and lower the top, which is done by moving the levers II forward and backward. In moving the levers II forward the actingrod E is rotated forward. The extension-rods G work against the joints D, moving them from a rear inclination to a front inclination, thereby raising and spreading the top. This movement is accomplished by the operator on the inside of top,and while occupying the seat A, by grasping either one of the levers H and moving the same, thus dispensing with the inconvenience of reaching around outside of the buggy-top, and by lowering the top from the inside it permits easy ingress and egress to the same.
I am aware of the Patents Nos. 262,033, dated August l, 1882, and 283,895, dated August 28, 1888, their construction, and mechanical parts, and therefore do not claim the same; but what I cla-im is embodied in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters lDatent,
A device for raising buggy-tops, consisting of a cross-rod secured to the back of a buggyseat, its ends loosely secured to the rear ends of the top side joints, in combination with a parallel rotating rod secured loosely to the back of said seat and provided with integral proj ccting hand-levers and integral curved arms, their outer ends bent round and loosely clasping around said top-joints, whereby the top may be raised or lowered by the movement of either hand-lever as the said joints slide within said bent en ds of said curved arms, substantiall y as shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
