Description
(No Model.) L. WILKINSON, Deod.
F. M; STEELE,'AdminiStrat0r. MACHINE FOR- TAPPING NUTS.
No. 378,468. Patented Feb. 28; 1888.
UNITED PATENT titties FREDERICK M. STEELE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ADMINISTRATOR OF LEIVIS IVILKINSON, DECEASED.
MACHHNE FOR TAPPENG NUTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,468, dated February 28,1888.
Application filed April 23, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LEwIs WILKINSON, late of Chicago, State of Illinois, deceased, of whose estate I, FREDERICK M. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, am administrator, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Tapping Nuts, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for tapping nuts; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and operation of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same, its construction and operation will now be described, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 across-section of the tapping slide and holder.
A represents a box or receptacle in which the tapping mechanism is placed and immersed in oil. This box is supported upon suitable legs or standards, and through one end is passed the driving-shaft B through a suitable stuffing-box, upon the outer end of which shaft is the driving-pulley b, and upon the inner end a clutch, B, in which is secured the tap B as shown in Fig. 1. In the opposite end of the oil receptacle A is the nutguide, which consists of a metal casting, C, having a longitudinal opening, 0, through it, which is square, hexagonal, or of any shape to properly receive and hold the nut-blank, which is slipped into it through a slot, 0, in one side of the guide, as shown. In the guide 0 is placed a slide, 0, moving back and forth in the longitudinal opening 0, and having a small knob or handle, 0 working in a slot in the side of the guide, by which it is moved. The front end of the slide 0 is bored out, as at a, to receive the end of the tap after it has passed through the nut.
In operation the receptacle A is filled with oil till the tap and all or nearly all of the Serial No. 235,911. (No model.)
blank-guide are covered. The end of the tap extends within the guide, and when a blank is inserted through the slot 0 and pushed up to the tap by the slide 0 the thread must be. out true, because the blank is held firmly in a groove or way exactly fitting it and in proper alignment with the tap. Only one blank can be inserted at one time, and therefore no carelessness upon the part of the workman can injure the tap, while, should more be fed in one at a time without removing any, they are all held true and cannot twist or break the tap. All the working parts being immersed in oil, they are always properly lubricated without any waste of oil, and the operation is thus more rapidly and cheaply performed. .65
The blank holder is made removable and formed with a square or angular shank,d, which fits into a similar-shaped socket, d, in the bottom of the oil-box. The guide is thus readily removed and another substituted to hold a larger or smaller sized blank, and when in place is firmly held in a true line with the tap.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is'- 7 5 1. In a machine for tapping nuts, the combination, with a revolving tap, of a stationary guide provided with a slot or passage of the size and shape of the nut, and a slide therein to press the blank to the tap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a machine for tapping nuts, a blankholder formed with a passage in which the blank is held, and having an opening in one side for the insertion of the blanks, i-n combi- S 5 nation with a slide therein for pressing the blank to the tap, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a machine for tapping nuts, the combination, with a box or receptacle for holding 0 oil, of a removable blank-holder formed with a longitudinal opening in which the blank fits closely, and having an opening in one side just large enough to admit a single blank, and a pressure-slide behind the blank having its forward end recessed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
