Be it known that I, ALONZO WV. BROWN, of Evanstou, in the county of Uinta and Territory of Wyoming, have invented afinew and Improved Telephone-Receiver, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved telephone-receiver. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing a modified form.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of myinvention is to construct a telephonereceiver in which the usual diaphragm will be replaced by a tongue arranged to vibrate in unison with the vibrations of the current.
My invent-ion consists in the construction and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Between the poles of the permanent magnet A is secured a box, 13, and in the extremities of the magnet A are formed threaded holes, into which are screwed the polar extensions a, which extend inwardly from the poles and face each other, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Upon each polar extension is placed a bobbin, 0, and in the cavity of the box Bis secured a spring-tongue, b, by means of a screw, 0, passed through the end thereof and int-0 one side of the box. The free end of the tongue 6 extends between the polar extremities a and is normally held in the center of the space between the said polar extremities. In the end of the box B is formed an internal thread, D, into which is screwed an earpiece, E, communicating with the interior of the box B. The polar extensions a proj cct beyond the outer surface of the magnet A and are nicked, so that they may be turned for adjustment by ascrewdriver from the outside of the instrument.
The bobbins G are placed in series in the telephonecircuit, and the variations of magnetism in the polar extensions to (due to the variation of the current passing through the bobbins G) produce vibrations in the tongue I), which cor- Serial No. 231,016. (No model.)
respond with the vibrations of the diaphragm of the transmitter and with the variations of the current controlled by the transmitter.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3 the tongue I), instead of being attached directly to the side of the box, is secured to the metallic plate d, which in turn is secured to the resonant board 6, attached to the inner wall of the box. The object of this attachment is to re enforce the vibrations of the tongue Z), thereby increasing the volume of sound in the receiver.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The combination,with the U shaped magnet and its inward-projeetin g polar extensions, each having a bobbin thereon, of the box held between the arms of the magnet and having the longitudinal opening, and the tongue secured at its inner end in the rear part of said opening and extending at its forward end into the space between the two polar extensions, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,with the U shaped magnet and its inward-projecting polar extensions, each having a bobbin thereon, of the box held between the arms of the magnet and having a longitudinal opening, a resonant board within said opening, and the tongue secured at its innor end to the said board and extending into the space between the said polar extensions, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination,with the U shaped magnet A and its inward projecting polar extensions a,screwed in its ends, the bobbins on said extensions, and the box B,having alongitudinal openiug,ofa resonant b0ard,e, within said opening, a metal plate, d, upon the same, the tongue I), the screw 0, passed through the tongue, plate, and board into the box, the free end of the tongue extending into the space between the polar extensions, and the ear-piece C, substantial] y as set forth.
