SOLOMON L. COHEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR MAT.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,356, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed November 19, 1886. Serial No. 219,351. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON L. COEEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Mats, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to an improved way of placing the name of a proprietor or number and strcctnanie of his residence on a door mat. I-Ieretofore door mat-s have had worked into the surface in weaving of same the number and street-name of the residence to which it belonged or the name of its proprietor. It,however, was expensive, and much time elapsed before the mat could be delivered after it was ordered. By my improvement I attach a device to the mat, on which device is placed the number of the residence or the name of the proprietor, or both.
It consists in a ring having afiat or beveled surface, on which is to be placed such number or name. To this ring is connected a staple for attaching it to the mat. Through the ring is placed the usual chain for securing the mat to the doorway.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a mat to which my improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof taken through the line a". w of Fig. 1.
a is the body of the mat.
b is a ring of metal containing aflat or suitable surface thereon for the purpose of engrav ing the number and street-name of aresidence or the name of a proprietor, or both. To this ring is attached a bifurcated staple, c, at its eye (1. This staple has metal washers-one, c, at the top, the other, f, at the bottom, the mat being contained between the two by reason of the staple passing through the body of such mat. The lower end of the staple can be hammered over or riveted in a secure manner, so as to prevent its detachment from the mat. Through the ring 1) passes a chain for securing the mat to the doorway.
I am aware that heretofore rings have been attached to door-mats, by which they were secured, and, as hereinbefore remarked, that the inscription of the name of the owner, 8m, has been worked into the body of the mat. By my invention I dispense with the latter costly means of inscribing the mat, and by modifying the construction of the ring and arranging it to lie upon. the upper surface of the mat I accomplish in a very inexpensive manner the double purpose of furnishing means for securing the mat in place and of prominently exposing theinscription of ownership. It is also to be observed that while the ring is attached to the mat by the washers and staple so securely as to prevent theft, it may, when desired, be readily removed by proper tools, and the ring he thus applied in succession to and perform its double duty with a great many mats, thus still further decreasing the aggregate expense hcretofore attendant upon the accomplishment of the two purposes.
The arrangement of the ring so as tolie upon the upper surface of the mat has the further advantage of securing the ring from damage by the movement of the mat toward the wall or other rigid body.
I claim 1. The combination, with a door-mat, of a ring having a fiat face for a name or inscrip tion and an eye therefor fixed to the mat upon the face and at adistance from the edge thereof and receiving the ring, whereby said ring is caused to lie securely upon the upper surface of the mat, the inscription of ownership is prominently exposed, and means are provided for securing the mat to a doorway, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a door-mat, a, of the ring I), having upon its face a flat surface for inscription of ownership, the bifurcated staple 0, having an eye, (1, receiving the ring, and the washers e f on the upper and under side of the mat, the staple passing through the washers and clamping the mat between them, and securing the ring to the upper surface thereof, so that the inscription shall be prominently exposed, for the purpose set forth.
SOLOMON L. COHEN.
