SA/ZNA ATTORNEYS HAIR TEASER This invention is an automatic hair teasing device wherein a motor or other source of power, moves a comb or brush back and forth to stroke the hair. The advantages of vibrating a hair teasing implement by electrical or other power means are obvious. For instance, the saving in time and the improved thoroughness in stroking the hair realized, are distinct advantages for the beauty shop operator as well as for home users.
The present invention has as an object, the providing of a hair teasing device which is inexpensive, safe, and effective while at the same time providing an implement that can be easily manipulated by one hand. These and other objects will be apparent from the following description and drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation view of the hair teasing device with parts broken away;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the FIG. 1 device with parts broken away;
FIG. 3 is an elevation of the rear of the teasing device;
FIG. 4 is an elevation of the front of the teasing device taken along the lines 44 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is a plan view of a modified hair teasing device with parts broken away; and
FIG. 6 is a side elevation of the FIG. 5 device.
As seen in FIGS. 1 and 2, the device includes a handle portion 1, which forms a housing for a source of power, in the form of electric motor 2 connected to batteries 3 and 4. While a mechanical spring could be used in place of the motor 2 and batteries 3 and 4, an electrical source of power is preferred. A push button switch 5 is mounted on one side of the handle 1 for convenience in handling and quick access.
A hair contacting implement comprises a brush or comb 7 on handle 8 connected to one end of an elongated shank 8 through socket 6. The shank 8 has a pivot point approximately midway of its length in the form of a stub pin 9 journalled in an internal bushing 10 of handle 1. The end of shank 8 remote from socket 6 is provided with a slot 12 to receive a pivot stud 11 mounted on rotatable gear 14.
The gear 14 is rotatable about a further pin 16 held by a second internal bushing 18 and the armature 20 of motor 2 has a worm gear 22 in driving connection with the teeth of gear 14.
The front or forward end of handle 1 has an enlarged opening 25 through which the comb or brush 7 extends to reciprocate or rock. The opposite end of the handle 1 also houses a battery charging plug 31 for recharging nickel-cadmium batteries 3 and 4, if the device is cordless. Also a potentiometer 29 is mounted in the end of handle 1, adjacent plug 31 for varying the speed of the motor 2. Alternatively, the motor 2 can be made to plug directly in the usual house outlet.
In the use of the teasing device, the operator sets the potentiometer 29 at the desired speed (on the average about 300 strokes/minute) and grips the handle 1 with one hand thumbing push button switch 5 on. The brush or comb 7 is rocked back and forth as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 2, the extreme movements of the brush or comb being about one and one half to three inches. When applied to the hair, the operator or user with her second hand can separate a section of hair, say two inches wide about one quarter inch thick, and stroke the section of hair from top to bottom until the section is pushed down, forming a cushion next to the scalp. Then the operator can smooth the remaining hair to form the style.
Rocking the comb or brush 7 back and forth simulates the motions normally made manually, but actually saves about 3 to 10 minutes for each treating period. The device can also be used on synthetic hair, wigs and mens hair although its use will primarily be by women. Implements other than bush or comb 7 can be attached to socket 6 and while it is preferred to use a detachable implement with handle 8, it will be appreciated that the entire handle 8 and shank 8' assembly can be made as a single unit.
In FIGS. 5 and 6, a modified and preferred hair teasing device with handle 101 is shown in which motor 102 with worm gear 104 on armature 103 are located in the central portion of the devices handle and two side-by-side batteries 105 are housed forwardly of the motor 102; Worm gear 104 is in driving engagement with disc gear 106 rotatably mounted on a stub pin 107 held on bushing 109. The disc gear 106 has an eccentric stud pin 108 which is passed through slot 1 10 in the shank 112' of handle 112.
In the modified device, the end of shank 112i is pivoted to turn about pin 1 14 at the rear of the handle 10] rather than forwardly of the motor of the FIG. 1 device. The handle 112 has a brush or comb portion (not shown) which is connected to socket to be moved back and forth the same as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 2 when push buttom switch 118 is pressed in the handle 101. The potentiometer 109 and battery charging plug 131 are placed in the device for the same purpose as described in connection with the FIG. 1 arrangement. v
The wiring which connects the batteries 106 to the motor 102 as well as push button switch 118, the battery charging plug 131 and potentiometer 109, is conventional and omitted to clearly show the mechanical connections.
It will be observed that the rear of shank 112' is crooked or bent to allow for the placement of motor 102 and that the portion of shank 112' between eccentric pin 108 and socket 120, is also crooked or bent to provide a space for batteries 105. With the pin 114 located at the rear of handle 101, the extreme movements of the brush or comb of the FIG. 5 device are at least equal to the movements of the brush or comb 7 seen in FIG. 2.
While the foregoing descriptions include what are at present considered to be the preferred embodiments of this invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the invention, and it is aimed to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
