[57] ABSTRACT A winding board for providing a rigid member about which a length of cloth or the like may be wrapped constructed from corrugated material bent in the form of a rectangular tube with the edges of said corrugated material forming a central web extending the length of said winding board and wherein protrusions are formed in the exterior of said board adjacent said web and end flaps are attached to the exterior of said board to increase the frictional contact forces between said board and said cloth.
26 Claims, 8 Drawing Figures WINDING BOARD The present invention relates to winding boards, and more particularly to a new and improved winding board about which a length of cloth or fabric may be wrapped so that the fabric can be conveniently handled, stored or transported as required.
In the handling of fabrics and cloth material, it has been a general practice to employ winding boards as a center about which a length of cloth can be wrapped so that the cloth may be easily handled during transport or storage. A number of different configurations of winding boards made from corrugated cardboard material have been previously used, and they have served the purpose of providing a center for the material or fabric but have not proven entirely satisfactory under all conditions of service for the reason that difficulty has been experienced in preventing the cloth wound thereon from sliding off 'andunrolling fromthe board during shipping and handling. This problem is dueto the fact that cloth material will tend to slide on the smooth exterior of the material used in forming the winding boards.
The general purpose of the present invention is to provide a strong winding board with means to prevent cloth wound thereon from sliding off and unrolling from the board during shipping and handling thereby reducing losses due to damage to the cloth during shipping. To attain this result, the present invention contemplates the use of an improved winding board formed from corrugated cardboard material whereby the winding board is of sufficient strength to prevent bending or breakage thereof and a portion of the exterior of the board is made irregular by deforming the material from which the board is constructed to increase the resistance of cloth to slide off or unroll from the board.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an improved winding board for use in forming a core about which a length of cloth may be wrapped.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of an improved winding board of sufficient strength to prevent bending or breakage during handling.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved winding board with means on the exterior thereof to increase the resistance of cloth to slide off the board.
An even further object of the invention is the provision of an improved winding board which minimizes damage to the cloth wound thereon due to contact with the exterior of the board.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a winding board which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art as the same become better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the improved winding board of the present invention with a length of cloth wound thereon;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the embodiment shown in FIG. I with the cloth removed;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view of the device shown in perspective taken on lines 3--3 of FIG. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of a blank for forming a winding board in accordance with the embodiment shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is a partial sectional view shown in perspective taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 are views similar to FIG. 5 illustrating other embodiments of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, there is shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 an embodiment 10 of the improved winding board of the present invention. In FIG. 1 the board 10 is shown with a bolt of cloth 12 wound therearound. This board 10 has an elongated rectangular crosssection which acts as a stiffener for the flexible cloth material and is provided with ends on which printing identifying the cloth can be placed. By packaging cloth in this manner, handling and storage is easier because of the rigidity added to the cloth by the board 10.
The winding board 10 is formed from a single piece of corrugated cardboard material with a bottom wall 16; two side walls 18 extending at right angles from said bottom wall 16; two top walls 20 extending at right angles to the side walls 18 and parallel to the bottom walls 16; and two central web members 22 extending at right angles to the two top walls 20 to abut the inside of the bottom wall 16 at a point of contact 24. These central web members 22 are formed by the two ends of the corrugated material and extend the length of the board 10 to stiffen the board and resist bending and breaking thereof during handling.
Each end of the winding board 10 has a flap member 26 which extends from each end of the bottom walls 16 at right angles thereto to form a flat marking surface 28. The flap members 26 also extend up over top walls 20 and can be sealed to the top walls 20 by a suitable adhesive or stapled as required. The marking surface 28 provides a convenient surface on which marking identification can be printed to identify the price, quantity and material contained on the bolt.
In FIG. 4, a blank 30 of corrugated sheet material from which the board 10 is constructed is illustrated. The blank 30 is generally rectangular in shape with two rectangular shaped end flaps 26 extending from opposite sides thereof. The blank 30 is illustrated with a plurality of fold lines along which the blank 30 is to be folded during its formation into a board 10.
Each of the end flaps 26 is separated from the rest of the blank 30 by a fold line 32, each of which fold lines being colinear with opposite sides of the blank. A second fold line 34 divides each of the flaps 26 into two portions. A plurality of parallel fold lines 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, and 46 extend across the blank 30 between two edges, to divide theblank into bottom, top and side walls and central web means.
Of particular importance for purposes of the present invention are the fold lines 36 and 46 which separate the central web members 22 from the rest of the blank 30. In the present embodiment of this invention the blank 30 has spaced perforations 48, along these fold lines 36 and 46. These perforations 48 along fold lines 36 and 46 will form protrusions 50 in the outer surface of top walls 20 which extend in the plane of the web members 22 when the blank is folded to form a board 10. These protrusions 50 can be seen in detail in FIG. 5, extending from the surface of top wall 20 so that the protrusions 50 will engage the cloth wound on the board to reduce the tendency of the cloth to slide off of the board 10. The protrusions 50 are formed along fold lines 36 and 46 rather than along fold lines 38, 40, 42 and 44 for the reason that fold lines 38, 40, 42 and 44 form corners on the board 10 over which cloth will be wound. With delicate fabrics, it has been found that if the protrusions 50 are formed on the corners of the board 10, the fabric can be snagged or damaged thereby.
An additional embodiment with a T shaped perforated portion is shown in FIG. 5 and identified by reference numeral 52. In this embodiment the top walls are perforated along lines 54 to intersect perforations 48 at right angles thereto, as shown.
Alternative embodiments are illustrated in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8 for use with coarserfabrics. These embodiments utilize various shapes of cut out portions (along fold lines 36 and 46) which will extend away from the surface of the top walls 20 when the blank 30 is folded to form a board 10. In FIG. 6, the extensions 56 are rectangular shaped; in FIG. 7, the extensions 58 are semicircular shaped; and in FIG. 8, the extensions 60 are triangular shaped.
It should be understood, of course, that the foregoing disclosure relates only to preferred embodiments of the invention, and that numerous modifications or alternations may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
