NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
NATHAN S. JOHNSON, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
WASH|NG= MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,829, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed May 23,1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN S. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvementsin Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in boiler washing-machines; and the nature of the invention consists in combining with a boiler a cylinder rotating within the same provided with transverse interior troughs or buckets having acute angular ribs, and the recess between said ribs parallel with the periphery of the cylinder, and said portion provided with a series of perforations opposite slots in said cylinder, and in the walls of the cylinder perforations protected by shields extending within said cylinder.
It consists, also, in combining with the cylinder a boiler and its cover made substantially steam -tight by means of fibrous packing placed and retained between their edges, as
- will be hereinafter described in connection represented at B, its bottom edge grooved at b to receive the re-enforced upper edge, a,of the boiler, and within the grooves 11 is placed a packing, b preferably of fibrous material, to
- form a substantially steam-tight joint between the boiler and its cover, the two being retained united by the bails b, hinged. to the cover, having the lower ends in engagement with pins a projecting from the ends of the boiler.
The cylinder D is formed of a large section,
' forming the body of said cylinder, and a small segmental section, forming the cover thereof, said sections being hinged together on one side at d and retained united on the opposite Serial No. 230.114. (No model.)
side by means of a spring-catch, 01*, and lug ed. The cylinder is provided with trunnions d d, and the latter is adapted to receive a handle, d", to rotate it, said trunnions resting in bear- .ings. To produce a certain amount of rubbing action upon clothing and permit the pasrated at e for the passage of steam and water received directly through the slots D?. The
ribbed sides of the buckets have also perforations 6 for the escape of water therefrom while, performing the upper half of their revolution, and thus sprinkling'the clothing with suds.
The perforation 6 being distant from the edge of the acute angles of the ribs, the latter prevent the perforations e", as well as the perforation e, from becoming obstructed by the clothing.
To prevent the openings 0 in the sides of the cylinder becoming obstructed also by the clothing in said cylinder, shields O are se cured to the inner surface thereof opposite said openings, but at some distance therefrom. Soap and'water or other saponaceous latter placed upon a stove. be washed is placed in the cylinder and rotation imparted thereto. The clothing during the operation is turned over and over, the upper surface being subjected to the purifying efiect of the steam entering the cylinder, through the orifice above the point of submergence of the cylinder, and this, in connection with the soapy water, rapidly removes the impurities of the clothing.
I am aware that the cylinder of boiler washing-machines has been provided with troughs or buckets of various forms; but- I am not aware that said buckets have been provided with a seriesof perforations in the valley between two angular ribs, and said perforations thereby protected against clogging. I
I am'also aware that unshielded perforation have been made in the walls of the cylinder, I
and do not claim them, broadly.
compound is introduced in the boiler and the The clothing to I am also aware that packing has been used between a wash'boiler and its cover.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a washing-machine, the combination of a boiler, a cylinder therein having transverse slots in its periphery, with interior troughs having two ribs provided with perforations in the valley between said ribs, the
latter perforations being opposite the slots in the cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a washing-machine, the combination
