Abstract

A stretch and roll frame, adapted to be used for supporting a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like thereon, comprises a first elongated frame member, a second elongated frame member, a first side frame member, and a second side frame member. The first and second elongated frame members each have attaching means provided thereon intermediate the ends thereof for detachably fastening one of the pairs of sides of a workpiece thereto. In addition, each of the first and second elongated frame members has notches formed adjacent its ends. The first and second side frame members each include adjustment means for varying the relative lengths thereof. Further, each of the ends of the first and second side frame members has a slot formed therein, which is adapted to co-operate with one of the notches formed adjacent the ends of the first and second elongated frame members for purposes of assembling the first and second side frame members to the first and second elongated frame members whereby to provide, when the first and second side frame members are so assembled to the first and second elongated frame members, a frame capable of supporting a workpiece thereon.

10 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures STRETCH AND ROLL FRAME FOR CANVAS NEEDLEWORK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In recent years a marked increase has been evident in the number of people who are actively engaging in one form or another of arts and crafts. The extent of their interest therein as well as the level of skills possessed thereby, of course, varies from one individual to another. However, the fact that such a varied assortment of arts and crafts, requiring the utilization of different degrees of skills, does exist affords an opportunity for anyone, who so desires, to participate therein.
One specific type of arts and crafts which hasproven to be very popular with people of all ages is that of needlework. In order to tap this large reservoir of interest, a number of manufacturers have undertaken to make available for sale kits, which contain the materials necessary to produce an article by means of needlework. For those who prefer to exercise their own creativity in designing the pattern for an article and in selecting the particular colors, etc., to be used in completing the needlework, a number of retail outlets exist which sell the supplies which are required for this purpose.
Notwithstanding the availability of the aforementioned kits as well as the availability of materials not in kit form, frames designed to be used to support the workpiece while the needlework is being preformed thereon have nevertheless not been readily available heretodate. Moreover those which have been employed for this purpose heretofore have generally been characterized by the fact that they inherently possess one or more disadvantages. In this connection, many of the prior art frames have been limited in their use by the fact that they can only accommodate thereon workpieces of a particular size. Since the workpieces on which needlework is performed vary greatly in size, this means that one must either purchase a number of different size frames, or else limit oneself to doing needlework on workpieces of substantially the same size. A further disadvantage of prior art forms of needlework frames is that they are commonly designed to be of a size sufficient to encircle all of the edges of the workpiece. On the other hand, needlework is generally performed on only one particular portion of a workpiece. As a result, with such prior art forms of frames one is required to cope with a large size frame when in reality it is only necessary that a relatively small area of the workpiece be exposed at any time, i.e., that area presently being worked upon. Another disadvantage of some prior art forms of frames is that they have been designed such that they are intended for only one time use, i.e., they are intended to serve as the permanent frame of the needlework when the latter is completed. Finally, the frames which have been developed most recently in an attempt to obviate some of the deficiencies inherent in earlier types of frames, which have been mentioned hereinabove, have generally proven to be fairly complex in nature, and accordingly relatively expensive to manufacture.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved stretch and roll frame for a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like wherein the frame is capable of being adjusted so as to enable workpieces having different sizes and shapes to be supported thereon.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide such a stretch and roll frame, for supporting thereon a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like, which is operable to enable, only that portion of the workpiece on which one desires to work at any given time to be exposed.
Another object of the present invention is to provide such a stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like which is capable of being employed over and over again to make a succession of articles by means of needlework. I
A further object of the present invention is to provide such a stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a workpiece such as a canvas needlework and the like which is relatively simple in construction and easy to use.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide such a stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like which is capable of being manufactured of commonly available materials and at relatively low cost, yet is characterized by its durability and relatively long operating life.

Each of the first and second side frame members comprises a plurality of slidably extensible parts, and has securing means provided for releasably securing the plurality of slidably extending parts together to form a rigid structure and to permit facile release thereof for slidably varying the length of the corresponding side frame member. The adjacent ends of the first and second elongated frame members and the first and second side frame members are each provided with one of the co-operating components of notch and slot assemblies which are operable for assembling the first and second elongated frame members and the first and second side frame members to thereby form a frame. The notches and slots of the notch and slot assemblies are so dimensioned as to permit the facile removal of one of the first and second elongated frame members from the frame whereby to enable the workpiece to be rolled thereon to expose a further portion thereof, and thereafter to permit the reassembly and locking in place in the frame of the aforesaid one of the first and second elongated frame members. i
In accord with the preferred embodiment of the invention, the first and second elongated frame members each comprise a dowel having substantially the same length. Intermediate each of the lengths thereof, means are provided to which one end of a workpiece is attachable. Adjacent each end of each dowel there is formed therein a notch comprised of a pair of spaced, aligned slits. The two notches provided on each dowel are positioned inwardly of the ends of the dowels at unequal distances therefrom. The first and second side frame members are each of two-part construction. Two parts, comprising each side frame member, are releasably secured together in partially overlapping relation by means of a threaded fastener and wing nut. By varying the extent to which the two parts overlap, the relative length of the side frame member can be varied. A slot is formed in the non-overlapping end portion of each of the two parts comprising a side frame member. These slots co-operate with the pairs of notches formed adjacent the ends of the dowels whereby to permit the assembly of the pair of two-part side frame members to the pair of dowels to thereby form a frame. Further, these slots and notches are so dimensioned as to permit, when the aforedescribed threaded fasteners and wing nuts have been loosened, the facile removal of one of the dowels from the frame so that a greater or lesser portion of the workpiece can be rolled on the latter dowel and to thereafter permit the dowel to be reassembled and locked in place in the frame through the re-engagement of the pairs of notches thereof with the slots formed at one end of the pair of two-part side frame members.

FIG. 5 is a partial side view .of the stretch and roll DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENT Referring to FIG. 1 of the drawings, there is illustrated therein a stretch and roll frame, generally designated by reference numeral 10, which is adapted for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece 12. The frame includes first and second elongated frame members 14 and 16, respectively, and first and second side frame members 18 and 20, respectively. The first and second elongated frame members 14 and 16 preferably each comprise a wooden dowel having a suitable diameter. In this regard, it has been found that a dowel having a 34 inch diameter is suitable for this purpose. However, it is to be understood that dowels having greater of lesser diameters could also be employed, if so desired, without departing from the essence of the invention. As regards the length of the dowels 14 and 16, this can vary depending on the size as well as the type of workpiece 12 which it is desired to support on the frame 10. Irrespective however, of whatever length it is selected to make the dowels 14 and 16, the lengths of both of the latter should be essentially the same.
The dowels 14 and 16 are each provided intermediate their lengths with attaching means 22 and 24, respectively. In accordance with the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the attaching means 22 and 24 each comprise a relatively narrow portion of canvaslike material of lesser length than the length of the dowels 14and 16. The attaching means 22 and 24 are fastened to the dowels 14 and 16, respectively, by any suitable means such as, for example, through use of metal staples 26 and 28, respectively. Other types of fasteners could, however, obviously be used to fasten the means 22 and 24 to the dowels 14 and 16, respectively, without departing from the essence of the invention.
Adjacent the respective ends, the dowels 14 and 16 are each provided with notches 30 and 32, and 34 and 36, respectively. Each of these notches 30, 32, 34, 36 in turn is comprised of. a pair of spaced, aligned slits or grooves formed in the circumference of the dowels l4 and 16. Only the slits 30a and 30b, and 34a and 34b of notches 30 and 34, respectively, can clearly be seen in the drawings, i.e., in FIG. 4 thereof. For a purpose yet to be described, as best seen with reference to FIGS. 1 and 4 of the drawings, the spacing of notch 30 from the nearest end thereto of dowel 14 is different from the spacing of notch 32 from the end of dowel 14 nearest thereto. Similarly, the spacing of notches 34 and 36 from the ends of dowel 16 nearest thereto also is different. More specifically, the spacing of notch 32 from the closest end thereto of dowel 14 is substantially twice the spacing of notch 30 from the end of dowel 14 nearest thereto and likewise the spacing of notch 34 from the end of dowel 16 adjacent thereto is substantially twice the spacing of notch 36 from the end of dowel 16 nearest thereto. Further, as will be described more fully hereinafter, the spacing of notches 30 and 36 from the ends closest thereto of dowels 14 and 16, respectively,
is the same, and therefore in view of the above, the
spacing of the notches 32 and 34 from the ends of dowels 14 and 16, respectively, nearest thereto obviously is also the same. I
Referring again to FIGS. 1 and 4 of the drawings, in accordance with the embodiment of the frame 10 depicted therein, the first and second side frame members 18 and 20 are each preferably of two-part construction. More particularly, side frame member 18 consists of the two substantially rectangular parts 38 and 40 while the side frame member 20 is comprised of the two substantially rectangular parts 42 and 44. Suitable securing means 46 are provided for releasably securing together the two parts 38 and 40 comprising the side frame member 18 to form a rigid structure of the latter. In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, each of the securing means 46 comprises a threaded fastener 48 which is threadable into a wing nut 50, a pair of washers 52 which are positioned on the fastener 48 so as to be engageable with the external side surfaces of the two parts of the corresponding side frame member, i.e., parts 38, 40 of side frame member 18 and parts 42, 44 of side frame member 20, and a cap 54 which is positionable on the threaded end of the fastener 48 and functions as a protective cover therefor.

Although not visiblein the drawings, it is to be understood that each of the parts 42 and 44 of the side frame member 20 is likewise provided with a longitudinally extending slot similar in nature to the aforedescribed slots 56 and 58. Each of the slots 56 and 58 as well as those (not shown) provided in the parts 42 and 44 of side frame member 20 are suitably dimensioned so as to have a width sufficient to be capable of receiving therein the fasteners 48, and a length sufficient to permit, in a manner yet to be described, the side frame members 18 and 20 to be extended a predetermined amount.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, each of the parts 38 and 40, and 42 and 44 of the side frame members 18 and 20, respectively, has a guiding and aligning pin mounted thereon, by any suitable means, adjacent one end thereof. Thus, as depicted in FIG. 4 of the drawings, part 38 of side frame member 18 is provided with guiding and aligning pin 62 and part 40 is provided with guiding and aligning pin 60. Although not illustrated in the drawings, it is nevertheless to be understood that each of the parts 42 and 44 of side frame member 20 is likewise provided in similar fashion with a guiding and aligning pin. Apart from the guiding and aligning function performed thereby which will be described more fully subsequently, the guiding and aligning pins 60 and 62 as well as those (not shown) provided on the parts 42 and 44 also function as stops. The latter fimction will also be referred to more fully hereinbelow.
Turning again to FIG. 4 of the drawings, as shown therein each of the parts 38 and 40 is provided at one of its ends with an end slot, i.e., slots 64 and 66, respectively. The parts 42 and 44 of side frame member 20 are provided in like fashion at one of their ends with similarly configured end slots (not shown). The slots 64 and 66 as well as those (not shown) provided at one end of the parts 42 and 44 co-operate with the notches 30 and 32, and 34 and 36 of the dowels 14 and 16, respectively, to form notch and slot assemblies employable for the purpose of assembling the'ends of the dowels 14 and 16 to the ends of the side frame members 18 and 20 whereby to form the frame illustrated in FIG. 1 of the drawings. As such, the slots 64and 66 as well as those (not shown) provided in parts 42 and 44 are suitably dimensioned so as to be each capable of receiving therein one of the notches 30, 32, 34 and 36, and so that when one of the notches 30, 32, 34 and 36 is received therein the fit between the notch and the side walls of the slot is such as to lock the respective dowel therein against rotation, relative to the side frame member to which it is assembled. In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, each of the slots 64 and 66 as well as those (not shown) formed in the parts 42 and 44 are all equally dimensioned so as to permit the interchangeability of dowels, i.e., to permit either the notch 30 of dowel 14 or the notch 36 of dowel 16 to be inserted in the slot 64 of part 40 of side frame member 18 and correspondingly either the notch 34 of dowel 16 or the notch 32 of dowel 14 to be inserted into the slot 16 of part 38 of side frame member 20.
Considering now the mode of assembly of the frame 10, the first step is to assemble the side frame members 18 and 20. Accordingly, with reference first to side frame member 18, the parts 38 and 40 are first placed in side-by-side overlapped relation so that the slots 64 and 66 are positioned at the respective outer ends of the parts 38 and 40. With the latter parts so positioned, fastener 48 with a washer 52 placed thereon is inserted through elongated slot 58 of part 38 and then through elongated slot 56 of part 40. Thereafter a second washer 52 is placed on the fastener 48 and a wing nut 50 is threaded thereon in loosely fitting relation. The side frame member 20 is assembled in similar fashion with the fastener 48 passing through the elongated slots (not shown) formed in the parts 42 and 44, and so that the head of the fastener 48 is located on the inside of the frame 10 and the wing nut 50 on the outside thereof as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings. Proceeding with the description of the assembling of frame 10, the next step is to take the pair of dowels 14 and 16 and arrange them in spaced relation on a substantially flat surface in such a manner that the end of dowel 14 adjacent to which notch 30 is provided is aligned with but spaced from the end of dowel 16 adjacent to which the notch 34 is formed therein. In addition, the dowels l4 and 16 are so positioned that the narrow portions of canvaslike material, i.e., tapes 22 and 24 are. face up. With the dowels 14 and 16 so positioned, one end of the workpiece 12 is attached to the tape 22 while the other end of the workpiece 12 is attached to the tape 24. In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, the ends of workpiece 12 are fastened to the tapes 22 and 24 in any suitable manner such as for example by being sewed thereto. With the workpiece 12 so attached to the dowels 14 and 16, the latter along with the workpiece 12 are turned over so that the workpiece 12 now restson the flat surface. Then the dowels 14 and 16 are rolled toward each other until the exposed area of the workpiece 12 which remains, is equal to the desired working area. Next one of the side frame members 18 or 20, which for purposes of this description will be assumed to be side member 18, is placed in a pt sition to connect notch 30 of dowel 14 and notch 34 of dowel 16 thereto, and so that the wing nut 50 is facing outwardly as viewed with reference to FIG. 1 of the drawings. The side frame member, i.e., stretcher 18 is then expanded by moving the parts 38 and 40 relative to each other until slot'64 of the outer part, i.e., part 40 of side frame member 18 engages the notch 30 and slot 66 of the inner part, i.e., part 38 of side frame member 18 engages the notch 34. Side frame member 20 is then assembled in a similar fashion so that the slot (not shown) formed at the outer end of the inner part, i.e., part 42 of side frame member 20 engages the notch 32 and the slot (not shown) formed at the outer end of the outer part, i.e., part 44 of side frame member 20 engages the notch 36. The workpiece 12 is then alternately stretched at each side by expanding the side frame members 18 and 20. During this expansion the guiding and aligning pins provided on the parts of the side frame members function to maintain the parts of each of the side frame members properly positioned relative to each other. Expansion of the side frame members is accomplished by loosening the respective fastener 48, expanding the side frame member 18 or 20, and then tightening the wing nut 50. By exerting pressure with ones forefinger against the head of the fastener 48, the latter can be kept from turning as the wing nut 50 is tightened. After the workpiece 12 has been stretched taut on the frame 10, the caps 54 can be positioned on the threaded ends of the fasteners 48 as a form of protective cover for the otherwise exposed ends of the fasteners 48. After the needlework has been completed on the exposed portion of workpiece 12, the wing nuts 50 are loosened so that the side frame members 18 and can be contracted and thereby disengaged from the notches 30, 32 and 34, 36 of the dowels 14 and 16, respectively. Thereafter the dowels l4 and 16 may be rolled relative to each other whereby to cause another portion of the workpiece 12, which has not as yet been completed, to be exposed. With a new portion of the workpiece 12 now having been exposed, the side frame members 18 and 20 are once again reassembled to the dowels 14 and 16 in the same manner as previously described. The process is repeated until all of the desired areas to be worked of the workpiece 12 have been completed. Thereafter, the side frame members 18 and 20 are disassembled from the dowels l4 and 16, the latter are rolled apart until the tapes 22 and 24 are again exposed, and then the ends of the workpieces 12 are freed from engagement with the tapes 22 and 24. The completed workpiece 12 can then be utilized in whatever manner may be desired such as for example, by being mounted in a permanent frame, etc.
Although one particular embodiment of the invention has been described herein and illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that modifications may be made therein without departing from the essence of the invention. Thus for example, the dowels 14 and 16 rather than being made of wood as described above could be made of another suitable material such as plastic, metal, etc. Similarly, the side frame members 18 and 20 could also be made of wood, plastic, metal, etc. As illustrated and described above, the dowels 14 and 16 are provided with the notches, and the side frame members 18 and 20 are provided with the end slots which co-operate with the aforementioned notches. However, it would also be possible to configure the dowels and side frame members so that the notches were provided on the side frame members and the slots on the dowels. In addition, the guiding and aligning pins which function to guide the movement relative to each other of the two parts which comprise a side frame member could be eliminated, if so desired. If this were done, it would be preferable to provide some other means to funcu'on as a stop as a substitute for the now eliminated guiding and aligning pins. Further, the attaching means 22 and 24, if so desired, could take some other form, as long as whatever means was selected for this purpose was operable to permit the ends of the workpiece 12 to be detachably secured thereto. Other modifications which could be made to the frame of the present invention apart from those specifically referred to hereinabove will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
It is contemplated that normally a plurality of sets of dowels 14 and 16 having different lengths but each capable of co-operating with the same pair of side frame members, will be provided to a user. This enables the user to employ the frame for supporting thereon a greater number of differently sized workpieces.
Thus, it can be seen that the present invention provides a novel and improved stretch and roll frame for a workpiece such as a canvas needlework and the like wherein the frame is capable of being adjusted so as to enable workpieces having different sizes and shapes to be supported thereon. In accord with the present invention, the stretch and roll frame is operable to enable only that portion of the workpiece on which one desires to work at any given time to be exposed. The stretch and roll frame of the present invention is capable of repetitive usage as a means of supporting a succession of workpieces on which needlework is to be done. Moreover, there has been provided in accordance with the present invention a stretch and roll frame which is relatively simple in construction and easy to use. Finally, the stretch and roll frame of the present invention is capable of being manufactured of commonly available material and at relatively low cost, yet is characterized by its durability and relatively long operating life.
Having thus described the invention, 1 claim:
1. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like comprising:
first and second elongated frame members each having attaching means provided thereon intermediate the length thereof for detachably engaging a workpiece; first and second side frame members extending between said first and second elongated frame members, each of said first and second side frame members comprising a plurality of slidably extensible parts and having means for releasably securing said slidably extensible parts together to form a rigid structure while yet permitting the facile release thereof, the adjacent ends of said first and second elongated frame members and said first and second side frame members being provided with notch and slot assemblies operable for assembling said first and second elongated frame members and said first and second side frame members together thereby to form a frame, the notches and slots comprising said notch and slot assemblies being dimensioned whereby to enable the facile removal of at least one of said first and second elongated frame members from the frame to permit rolling of the workpiece thereon and thereafter the facile reassembly and locking in place in the frame of said one of said first and second elongated frame members.
2. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 wherein said attaching means provided on each of said first and second elongated frame members comprises a narrow portion of canvaslike material and fastening means for fastening said narrow portion of canvas-like material thereto, and said first and second elongated frame members each comprise a dowel.
3. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a I rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 further comprising guiding and aligning means provided adjacent one of the ends of each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of each of said first and second side frame members, and wherein each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of said first and second side frame members is provided with a longitudinally extending slot for receiv- 5. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 wherein the ends of each of said first and second elongated frame members is provided with a notch of said notch and slot assemblies.
6. A stretch and roll frame for supporting a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 wherein one end of each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of said first and second side frame members is provided with a slot of said notch and slot assemblies. i 7. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon comprising:
first and second elongated frame members having a notch provided adjacent each of the ends thereof and attaching means provided intermediate the length thereof, said attaching means of said first and second elongated frame members each having detachably fastened thereto one edge of a workpiece; first and second side frame members extending between said first and second elongated frame members, said first side frame member comprising a first pair of slidably extensible parts and first means for releasably securing said first pair of slidably extensible parts together in overlapped relation to form a rigid structure while yet permitting facile release thereof, said second side frame member comprising a second pair of slidably extensible parts and second means for releasably securing said second pair of slidably extensible parts together in overlapped relation to form a rigid structure while yet permitting facile release thereof, one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts having a slot formed therein, said notch provided adjacent the ends of each of said first and second elongated frame members being co-operable with said slot formed in one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts to form notch and slot assemblies operable for assembling said first and second elongated frame members to said first and second side frame members to form a frame on which the workpiece is supported, andsaid notch provided adjacent the ends of each of said first and second elongated frame members and said slot formed in one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts being dimensioned whereby to enable the facile disassembly of said first and second elongated frame members from the frame to permit rolling of the workpiece thereon and thereafter the facile reassembly and locking in place in the frame of said first and second elongated frame members.
8. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon as set forth in claim 7 further comprising guiding and aligning means provided adjacent one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts for guiding and aligning each of said first pair of slidably extensible parts relative to each other and each of said second pair of slidably extensible parts relative to each other during movement thereof.
9. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon as set forth in claim 7 wherein said first means for releasably securing said first pair of slidably extensible parts together comprises a fastener extending through said first pair of slidably extensible parts and a wing nut threaded on said fastener, and said second means for releasably securing said second pair of slidably extensible parts together comprises a fastener extending through said second pair of slidably extensible parts and a wing nut threaded on said fastener.
10. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon as set forth in claim 7 wherein said notches provided adjacent the ends of said first elongated frame member are spaced inwardly therefrom unequal distances, and said notches provided adjacent the ends of said second elongated frame member are spaced inwardly therefrom unequal distances.

Claims (10)

1. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like comprising: first and second elongated frame members each having attaching means provided thereon intermediate the length thereof for detachably engaging a workpiece; first and second side frame members extending between said first and second elongated frame members, each of said first and second side frame members comprising a plurality of slidably extensible parts and having means for releasably securing said slidably extensible parts together to form a rigid structure while yet permitting the facile release thereof, the adjacent ends of said first and second elongated frame members and said first and second side frame members being provided with notch and slot assemblies operable for assembling said first and second elongated frame members and said first and second side frame members together thereby to form a frame, the notches and slots comprising said notch and slot assemblies being dimensioned whereby to enable the facile removal of at least one of said first and second elongated frame members from the frame to permit rolling of the workpiece thereon and thereafter the facile reassembly and locking in place in the frame of said one of said first and second elongated frame members.
2. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 wherein said attaching means provided on each of said first and second elongated frame members comprises a narrow portion of canvas-like material and fastening means for fastening said narrow portion of canvas-like material thereto, and said first and second elongated frame members each comprise a dowel.
3. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 further comprising guiding and aligning means provided adjacent one of the ends of each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of each of said first and second side frame members, and wherein each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of said first and second side frame members is provided with a longitudinally extending slot for receiving therein said releasably securing means and said guiding and aligning means.
4. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 3 wherein said means for releasably securing said plurality of slidably extensible parts includes a fastener projecting through said longitudinally extending slot of each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of one of said first and second side frame members, and a wing nut threaded on said fastener.
5. A stretch and roll frame for supporting thereon a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 wherein the ends of each of said first and second elongated frame members is provided with a notch of said notch and slot assemblies.
6. A stretch and roll frame for supporting a rollable workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like as set forth in claim 1 wherein one end of each of said plurality of slidably extensible parts of said first and second side frame members is provided with a slot of said notch and slot assemblies.
7. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon comprising: first and second elongated frame members having a notch provided adjacent each of the ends thereof and attaching means provided intermediate the length thereof, said attaching means of said first and second elongated frame members each having detachably fastened thereto one edge of a workpiece; first and second side frame members extending between said first and second elongated frame members, said first side frame member comprising a first pair of slidably extensible parts and first means for releasably securing said first pair of slidably extensible parts together in overlapped relation to form a rigid structure while yet permitting facile release thereof, said second side frame member comprising a second pair of slidably extensible parts and second means for releasably securing said second pair of slidably extensible parts together in overlapped relation to form a rigid structure while yet permitting facile release thereof, one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts having a slot formed therein, said notch provided adjacent the ends of each of said first and second elongated frame members being co-operable with said slot formed in one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts to form notch and slot assemblies operable for assembling said first and second elongated frame members to said first and second side frame members to form a frame on which the workpiece is supported, and said notch provided adjacent the ends of each of said first and second elongated frame members and said slot formed in one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts being dimensioned whereby to enable the facile disassembly of Said first and second elongated frame members from the frame to permit rolling of the workpiece thereon and thereafter the facile reassembly and locking in place in the frame of said first and second elongated frame members.

A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon as set forth in claim 7 further comprising guiding and aligning means provided adjacent one end of each of said first pair and said second pair of slidably extensible parts for guiding and aligning each of said first pair of slidably extensible parts relative to each other and each of said second pair of slidably extensible parts relative to each other during movement thereof.
9. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon as set forth in claim 7 wherein said first means for releasably securing said first pair of slidably extensible parts together comprises a fastener extending through said first pair of slidably extensible parts and a wing nut threaded on said fastener, and said second means for releasably securing said second pair of slidably extensible parts together comprises a fastener extending through said second pair of slidably extensible parts and a wing nut threaded on said fastener.
10. A stretch and roll frame having a workpiece such as canvas needlework and the like supported thereon as set forth in claim 7 wherein said notches provided adjacent the ends of said first elongated frame member are spaced inwardly therefrom unequal distances, and said notches provided adjacent the ends of said second elongated frame member are spaced inwardly therefrom unequal distances.
