Abstract

An ignition system for internal combustion engines additionally including a magnetic pulse device connected in the circuitry so as to provide current in the high voltage flowing to the sparkplugs during the time the circuit is closed between the distributor arm and distributor contact from a period before the opening of the breaker points. The circuitry includes a conventional ignition system with the addition of a magnetic pulse device and a double throw selector switch and ballast resistor.

3 Claims, 2 Drawing Figures IGNITION SYSTEM FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to an ignition system for internal combustion engines and more particularly to a means to increase the'duration of 'the spark to the sparkplugs for a period of time before the opening of the breaker points. 7
With th ordinary ignition system consisting of a battery, contact breaker and condenser, high voltage induction coil, distributor and sparkplugs, the spark is supplied to the sparkplug for only a brief period of time when the breaker points are open. This is sufficient only to initiate the burning of the fuel and not to continue to influence the ignition of the fuel until all of the ignition system, are also known in the prior art such as that found in my US. Pat. No. 3,028,524 issuedApr. 3, 1962 which discloses a system which operates with a self-induction coil of the vibrator type.
Also dual ignition systems are well known in'the prior art and such systems operate so that one system is substantially no more than a spare for the other.
With the present invention the combustion and maintenance of the sparkplugs in a clean condition for optimal ignition is improved over that of prior art systems.
An advantage of the present invention resides in the use of conventional parts in the ignition system including the conventional coil, breaker system vor interrupter, distributor, etc. with only the addition of a pulse device, selector switch, and ballast resistor into the system.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Basically the present invention deals with a conventional ignition system having an electrical power source, ignition switch, ignition coil, distributor, interrupter or breaker electrically connected through the distributor contacts to the sparkplugs and additionally a magnetic pulse device and selector switch to allow a sustained spark to be delivered to said sparkplugs.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Other advantages of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art, from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic schematic view of the components of the ignition system of the present invention with some of the parts enlarged out of proportion for clarity of illustration;
FIG. 2 is a circuit diagram of the system illustrated in FIG. 1.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The present invention is described with respect to application to an automobile but it should be realized that it is equally applicable to internal combustion engines of other vehicles or stationary internal combustion e'ngines. Referring to the figures in the drawing there is shown a battery 1 connected through ignition switch 2 and ballast resistor 9 to the contacts 17 of magnetic pulse device 8. In pulse device 8 the capacitor 18 is connected across contacts 17. Coil 19 of magnetic pulse device "8 is connected in series with contacts 17 which are connected in series with selector switch 7.
Primary coil of ignition coil 4 is also connected in series with contacts 17 through terminal 20 but is connected in parallel with coil l9 and selector switch 7.
Connection 21 which is located at the opposite end of primary coil 15 from terminal 20 has connections from the primary coil 15 to selector switch 7 and to breaker points 12 and capacitor 11 in parallel with breaker points '12."
From this same connection 21 there is connected secondary coil 16 of ignition coil 4 which in turn is connected through line 22 to distributor arm 13 which is rotated on the same shaftas engine-driven cam 10 used for opening and closing breaker points 12. Distributor arm 13 located in distributor 5 rotates for connection with distributor contacts leading to each of the sparkplugs 6. Each of sparkplugs 6 is connected to ground and thereby to the negative terminal of battery 1. In a like manner one side of breaker points 12 and capacitor II are also connected to ground.
In the operation of the ignition system shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 with the ignition switch 2 in a closed position and selector switch 7 open, the circuit through the parallel branch composed of coil 19 of magnetic pulse device 8 and switch 7 is open and therefore the coil 19 is deactivated. Normally closed contacts 17 complete the circuit through primary coil 15 to interruptor 3 and through secondary coil 16 to distributor 5 and sparkplugs 6. Therefore with selector switch 7 in an open position shown by dotted outline 7A, the system operates in the manner of a conventional ignition system.
Upon the closing of selector switch 7 by moving it into position 7B, the full ignition system of the present invention is brought into operation. As before, breaker points 12 are operated by engine-driven cam 10 in conjunction with distributor arm 13 but in addition, upon the closing of selector switch 7, the circuit through coil 19 is completed. Upon the closing of breaker points 12 a circuit is completed from battery 1 through ignition switch 2, ballast resistor 9, normally closed contacts 17 of magnetic pulse device 8, coil 19, switch 7, and breaker points 12 to ground and to the negative terminal of battery 1. By the activation of coil 19 the associated contacts 17 are opened thereby breaking the circuit momentarily and causing the contacts 17 to return to their normally closed position thus setting up a pulsing or vibrating contact 17. Thus the pulse device 8 sets up current through primary coil 15 of constant inengine-driven cam and therefore the circuit between distributor arm 13 and each of the distributor contacts is closed at a time shortly before the opening of breaker points 12. Immediately upon the closing of the circuit between distributor arm 13 and its contact, the spark which has been generated by means of magnetic pulse device 8 by the current passing through coils 15 and 16 is carried to sparkplug 6 connected to that one of the distributor contacts. The spark is sustained in the sparkplug 6 until the current generated by the opening of breaker points 12 has been dissipated. In order to gain full advantage of the sustained spark an adjustment in the position of distributor arm 13 could be made so as to advance it to a position to take full ad vantage of the current or spark generated approximately 8 before the opening of breaker points 12.
Thus it can be seen that only a simple selector switch 7 is needed to actuate the conventional system or the full ignition system of the present invention. This simplification of elements implies advantages both in costs and in operation safety and effieiency. Also the voltage received by the sparkplugs in the full ignition system remains stable due to the regular frequency of the pulse device with the full power of the coil being efficient at any engine speed along with a longer duration of current.
What is claimed is:
1. An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprising an electrical power source,
an ignition switch connected to said power source,
a magnetic pulse device having a coil and normally closed contacts magnetically attracted by said coil,
said magnetic device contacts connected in series -with said ignition switch and said magnetic pulse device coil,
an ignition coil having primary and secondary coils with said primary coil connected in series with said magnetic pulse device contacts,
a distributor having cam operated breaker points, a
distributor arm and contacts,
a-sparkplug connected to each of said distributor contacts,
said distributor arm. operably closing the circuit to each of said distributor contacts in turn and connected to said secondary coil,
' said breaker points connected in series with said primary coil;
and a selector switch connected in series with said magnetic pulse device coil with said series connected selector switch and magnetic pulse device coil connected in parallel with said primary coil.
2. The ignition system of claim 1, further characterized by a ballast resistor connected in series with said magnetic pulse device contacts.
3. The ignition system of claim 1, further characterized by capacitors, in parallel with said magnetic pulse device contacts and with said breaker points.

Claims (3)

1. An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprising an electrical power source, an ignition switch connected to said power source, a magnetic pulse device having a coil and normally closed contacts magnetically attracted by said coil, said magnetic device contacts connected in series with said ignition switch and said magnetic pulse device coil, an ignition coil having primary and secondary coils with said primary coil connected in series with said magnetic pulse device contacts, a distributor having cam operated breaker points, a distributor arm and contacts, a sparkplug connected to each of said distributor contacts, said distributor arm operably closing the circuit to each of said distributor contacts in turn and connected to said secondary coil, said breaker points connected in series with said primary coil, and a selector switch connected in series with said magnetic pulse device coil with said series connected selector switch and magnetic pulse device coil connected in parallel with said primary coil.
2. The ignition system of claim 1, further characterized by a ballast resistor connected in series with said magnetic pulse device contacts.
3. The ignition system of claim 1, further characterized by capacitors, in parallel with said magnetic pulse device contacts and with said breaker points.
