Abstract

An elongated piston rod includes pistons at opposite ends for pumping water to a heater which is then mixed with acid and fed to a hand spray gun. Outwardly of the pistons for pumping water are pistons for pumping acid to the water line between the heater and the spray gun. A threaded bolt rigidly connected to an extension on the water piston is threadably connected to the acid piston and insulated from the acid chamber. A continuous ring is mounted on the outer ring of the acid piston and held in place by a retainer and bolt connected to the acid piston. The acid piston sleeve and head are connected to the water piston head by a plurality of bolts.

The multiple fluid pump of this invention makes it possible to pump with the same pump both water and acid but keep them separated until they are mixed at a point between the water heater and the spray gun. Furthermore, the pump of this invention is so constructed that a minimum number of component parts are exposed to the acid and these parts are sacrificial and are easily replaced periodically.
The entire pump assembly for the acid is removable from the water pump assembly and selective parts may be replaced as needed. Ordinarily, the acid piston will be replaced most frequently and is detachably connected by a threaded bolt rigidly carried on a piston rod extension connected to the water piston. A continuous seal ring is mounted on the outer end 'of the acid piston and is retained in place by a retainer engaged by a nut on a bolt rigidly connected to the piston. Thus, the acid piston may be unscrewed from the threaded bolt and replaced with a new acid piston. The threaded bolt originally connected to the extension piston rod is protected from the corrosive acid fluid by the sealing rings on the acid piston.
This invention consists in theconstruction, arrangements and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter morefully set forth, specifically pointed out in the. claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

a common line 30 through a flow valve 32 in turn connected to a water heater 34 which feeds a hand-held spray gun 36.
The outer end of the water piston 12 includes an extension piston rod 38 having an inner end extending through a retainer plate 40 secured to the outer end of the piston 12 by bolts 42. A snap ring 44 is positioned on the extension rod 38 in a cavity 46 between the retainer plate 40 and the piston 12. The extension piston rod 38 extends outwardly axially through the cylinder head 24 into a second cylinder 48 having a cylinder head 50. A plurality of bolts 52 detachably connect the cylinder head 50 and cylinder 48 to the cylinder head 24.
The piston rod extension 38 includes a threaded bolt 54 rigidly connected thereto by use of a spanner wrench in a hole 56. A second piston 58 is threaded onto the bolt 54 against a washer 60. The piston 58 includes annular recesses 62 and 64 at opposite ends in which continuous sealing rings 66 and 68 are positioned. An annular recess 70 is provided in the piston 58 intermediate the rings 66 and 68 and receives an O- ring 72. A retainer washer 74 is secured against the outer end of the piston 58 by a-nut 76 on a threaded bolt 78 integral with the outer end of the piston 58.
An acid reservoir 80 is connected to each of the acid chambers 82 between the acid pistons 58 and the cylinder heads 50 by an inlet line 84. Similarly, a common outlet line 86 connects the chambers 82 to a line 88 for mixing the acid with water and feeding it to the gun 36. A check valve 90 is provided in'the inlet line 84 while a check valve 92 is provided in the outlet line 86, as seen in FIG. 2.
Thusin operation it is seen that water and acid may be pumped together by the same pump and mixed at a point close to the spray gun 36 thereby minimizing the corrosive action on the equipment. The equipment that is exposed to the acid is easily replaced in a minimum of time and the design of the pump minimizes the number of component parts requiring replacement. Specifically, the most that would ever need to be replaced is the acid piston '58 and its associated parts as seen in The multiple fluid pump of this invention is referred to generally in FIG. I by the reference numeral 10 and includes oppositely disposed pistons, 12 on a piston rod 14 extending through a spool valve body 16. It is unnecessary to go into the details of the spool valve body and its operation since it is sufficient to say that oil is circulated through the valve body 16 by a pump 18, as seen in the schematic in FIG. 8, causing the pistons 12 on the piston rod 14 to be reciprocated.
Opposite ends of the pump 10 are identical in their construction and operation and include water inlet lines 20 in communication with a water chamber 22 between the piston 12 and the cylinder head 24. The water lines 20 are interconnected and connected to a common water source 26. Similarly, outlet lines 28 connected to the water chamber 22 are connected to FIG. 7 including the rings 66, 68 and 72. The threaded bolt 54-integral with the extension pistonrod 38 should never have to be replaced since it is sealed from the acid chamber 82 by the sealing rings 66, 68 and 72. Infrequently, the acid cylinder 48 and the cylinder head 50 may need to be replaced. The disassembly of the acid pump assembly is readily accomplished by the removal of the bolts 52 interconnecting the cylinder heads 24 and 50 and clamping the acid cylinder 48 therebetween. Should the seals on the acid piston 58 ever fail and the extension piston rod 38 become damaged, it may be replaced by merely removing the cylinder head 24 and removing the bolts 42 holding the retainer plate 40 in place thereby allowing the snap ring I 46 on the inner end of the extension piston rod to be removed. A replacement extension rod may then be installed.
I claim:
I. A pump comprising,
a piston rod having at opposite ends a piston moveable in a cylinder having a cylinder head at the outer end thereby defining a chmaber between said piston and said head,
a common fluid inlet and outlet in communication with each of said chambers,
an extension piston rod connected to each of said pistons and extending axially outwardly through said cylinder head into a second cylinder having a cylinder head at the outer end thereof,
a second piston on each of said extension piston rods and a second chamber being defined between said second cylinder head and said second piston,
a second common fluid inlet and outlet in communication with each of said second chambers,
the second piston on each of said extension rods being connected thereto by a detachable means, and
seal means on said second piston outwardly of said detachable means to seal said detachable means from fluid in said second chamber.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said detachable means is further defined as being a threaded bolt having one end rigidly secured to said extension piston rod and the other end threadably connected to said second piston head.
3. The structure of claim 2 wherein said second cylinder is removeably secured between said first and second cylinder heads.
4. The structure of claim 3 wherein said second cylinder is removeably secured between said first and second cylinder heads by a plurality of bolts interconnecting said first and second cylinder heads.
5. The structure of claim 1 wherein said seal means includes an annular shoulder on the outer end of said second piston and a continuous piston ring on said annular shoulder, retaining element axially outwardly of said ring and a bolt extending through said retaining element into engagement with said second piston.
6. The structure of claim 1 wherein said extension piston rod extends through a retainer plate bolted on the outer end of said first piston and a snap ring is positioned on said extension piston rod between said retainer plate and said first piston.

Claims (6)

1. A pump comprising, a piston rod having at opposite ends a piston moveable in a cylinder having a cylinder head at the outer end thereby defining a chmaber between said piston and said head, a common fluid inlet and outlet in communication with each of said chambers, an extension piston rod connected to each of said pistons and extending axially outwardly through said cylinder head into a second cylinder having a cylinder head at the outer end thereof, a second piston on each of said extension piston rods and a second chaMber being defined between said second cylinder head and said second piston, a second common fluid inlet and outlet in communication with each of said second chambers, the second piston on each of said extension rods being connected thereto by a detachable means, and seal means on said second piston outwardly of said detachable means to seal said detachable means from fluid in said second chamber.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said detachable means is further defined as being a threaded bolt having one end rigidly secured to said extension piston rod and the other end threadably connected to said second piston head.
3. The structure of claim 2 wherein said second cylinder is removeably secured between said first and second cylinder heads.
4. The structure of claim 3 wherein said second cylinder is removeably secured between said first and second cylinder heads by a plurality of bolts interconnecting said first and second cylinder heads.
5. The structure of claim 1 wherein said seal means includes an annular shoulder on the outer end of said second piston and a continuous piston ring on said annular shoulder, retaining element axially outwardly of said ring and a bolt extending through said retaining element into engagement with said second piston.
6. The structure of claim 1 wherein said extension piston rod extends through a retainer plate bolted on the outer end of said first piston and a snap ring is positioned on said extension piston rod between said retainer plate and said first piston.
