N.PETERS, PH
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE AMOS NUDD, OF WAUPUN, WISCONSIN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,701, dated February 17, 1863.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, AMos NUDD, of Waupun, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the body or cylinder of a pump with a gate or valve sliding in a metallic clasp or socket, and covering an oritcein said socket, which orifice corresponds with one in the body ofthe pump. To the gate or valve as above named is attached a rod, which passes along the body of the pump to a point above the platform or covering of the well, where itis at all times accessible.
To enable'others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the accompanying drawings, A is a porlion o f the body of the pump. B is a part of the covering or platiorm of the well. C is a metallic clasp or socket,in which slides the gate or valve D. E is a pin or projection on the face of the gate or valve D, to which is attached the rod F, which, supported by the guides G G', passes through the platform B, where it terminates in the ring or handle H. In the face of the gate D next the clasp C is a recess packed with leather or other suitable substance, making it perfectly tight. The clasp and gate are placed on the body of the pump at a convenient point below the action "of frost, the length of the rod, of course, varying with the dist-ance at which the gate D is placed from the platform. Whenever' danger from freezing is apprehended, it is only necessary to pull the rod, thereby raising the gate and allowing the Water to escape.
Figure l represents the gate D closed. Fig. 2 represents itopen, showing the orifice I in the clasp or socket O.
I do not` claim tapping a pump above the valve and below the main eduction-port; but
What I do claim as my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the rod, sliding gate, and socket with the stock of the pump, When operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as set forth.
AMOS NUDD. Witnesses G. M. BROOKS, E. HOOKER.
