Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28,141, dated May 8, 1860; Reissued July 1, 1862,
To all whom it moz/y concern: f
Be it known that I, STEPHEN L. AVERY, of Norwich, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Brake Attachment for Wind lasses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 a plan or top view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two ligures The object of this invention is to apply a brake to a windlass in such a manner that articles attached to the windlass and raised by it may be lowered with facility; the hitherto slow and tedious manual Areverse movement of the windlass being avoided and the invention at the same time admitting of the operator having complete control over the descending movement of the article being lowered.
The invention is applicable to various purposes, its use in connection with wells may be mentioned as an instance, in which the buckets after being raised and emptied, may be rapidly lowered and their movement retarded at the proper time so that they will not violently strike the water.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a frame on which the bearings a, a, of a shaft B, are placed, and O, is a drum placed on said shaft, said drum having a rope D, attached to it. On one end of the shaft B, a ratchet E, is placed, and to the frame A, a pawl F, is attached said pawl engaging with the ratchet E, and pre venting a reverse movement of the drum C. The above parts constitute an ordinary windlass.
The shaft B, projects a short distance beyond the ratchet E, and has a collar or sleeve G, placed loosely on it and secured in proper position thereon by a pin o', the inner end of which fits in a groove made circumferensite end is provided with a pin e, which the spring d, keeps engaged with the ratchet E.
' To the inner side of the lever II a pin f, is
attached as shown in Fig. 2, and there is also attached to the same side of the lever and adjoining the pin f, a projection g, having a strip of leather h., or other suitable substance secured to its outer side. To the frame A, there is secured a vertical projection z', having a piece of leather y', secured to its outer side, the ratchet E, being between the projections g, and c', as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
From the above description it will be seen that the lever I-I, performs the oiice of a crank, the pin c, forming a connection between the lever and the ratchet E, and the drum C, will be turned and the rope D, wound on the drum loy turning the lever I-I, in the proper direction. lhen the article attached to the rope D, is elevated to the re quired height the operator presses inward toward the frame A, the handle end of the lever H, at a time when the pin f, comes in contact with the pawl F, and moves the end of the same out from the ratchet E. This movement of the lever frees the ratchet E, from the pin e, and the article attached to the rope D, descends by its gravity, the shaft B, turning within the sleeve or collar G, the operator controlling the descent of the article by pressing the projection g, against the side of the ratchet, the projection z', serving to resist the pressure of g.
Thus it will be seen that the lever H, arranged as shown with the shaft B, and ratchet E, performs the double function of a crank and brake, and serves as a simple means to effect the desired end.
