Description

(No Model.) S. L. HILL.
TRANSOM LIFTER.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
SYLYESTER L. HILL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,955, dated January. 24, 1888.
6 Application filed March 26, 1887. Serial No. 232.581. (No model.) i
To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER L. HILL, of
I the city of Boston, in the county'of Suffolk and -The invention relates to devices consists, first,in the improved form of the bar and of the sleeve or guide in which it slides";
second, in the spring pawl engaging with notches in the bar, whereby the said bar is secured in positionwhen the skylight has been raised to the desired point; third, in a rollerguide for the operating-rope.
In the drawings-forming part of thisspecification, Figure 1 is an elevation of theflimproved lifteras attached to the skylight. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the same in detail. Fig. 3 is a front elevation ofa portion of the same, showing the spring-pawl locking device.
In the drawings, A is the skylight, and B the casing to which it is hinged. Tothe casing Bis secured a bracket, 0, provided with lugs 00. The sleeve or guide D is attached to the bracket 0 by the pin c, which passes through holes in the lugs c act the bracket 0. The guide D can therefore rotate around the pin 0, to allow of the changes in direction of the bar E due to the rise and fall of the skylight. The guide D consists of a fiat frame or back, d, provided with a short sleeve, d, at its upper extremity and asimilarsleeve, d, at its lower extremity, through both'of which passes the barE. It also has a pulley, 1, adapted tovcarry arope, R, and 'incl osed in a suitable box,p. The lug L is pierced to re ceive the end of the rope R. The lugs L L are bored to receive the pin Z, carrying the roller Z, andserve as a guide to the rope R.
piece. The barE is rectangular in section and of greater width than thickness. 'lt'isattached tothe skylight by a bracket, .0, hav-' ing a bent staple passing through a holeinits extremity. It is adapted to fit looselyand slide in thesleeves d'd' o-t' the guide D. At its lower extremity it, has a pulley, P, iuclosed ina suitable box, 19. The spring paw-l G rospring'g". R. The rope R, by which-the barE is raised and lowered, is attached at one endto the lug L. It thence passes successively around the In order to raise or lower the bar E, the pawl G must be first disengaged by the releasecord R. i
I preferably make the bracket theguide D, and pulleys P and P of metalland th'e'bar E of spring-steel.-
Having thus described my inventiomwhat pivotally connected to the sash, a swinging guide, D, having sleeves d d, and a pawl, G,
I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
pulleys Pand Pand through the guide LL i 1. A-liftcrfor transoms, skylights, 850. con sisting of a flat and notched liftin g-bar,-E,
having spring 9', to engage the notches of said bar- E, in combination with the sheave-wheels 1 P P and an operating-cord, R, substantially as described, for the'purposes specified.
2. Alifter for transoms, skylights, &c.,-consisting of a flat and notched lifting-bar, E,
pivotally connected to the sash,a' swinging guide, D, having pawl G and its spring 9 sleeves dfdf, and lugs LL carrying roller Z. in combination with the sheave-wheels P P and an operating-cord, R; substantially as de scribed, for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin the presence of two subscribing wit-y nesses. I p I SYLVESTER L. ILL.
