FRANCIS L. DARRACH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HATCHWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi Letters Patent No. 376,864, dated January 24, 1888.
Application tiled January 20, 1887.
of ahatchway, skylight, door or window frame,
Be it knowuthat l, FRANCIS L. DARRACH, a citizen of the United States, Aresiding in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pen nsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Closing Doors for Hatch` ways, Skylights, Src., which improvement is fully s/et forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in Which.- t
Figure 1y represents a top or plan view o selfclosing doors for hatchways or skylights embodying my invention. Fig.'2 represents a vertical section in line x zv,'Fig.r1. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of auiodiflcationV thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-` spondingparts inthe several figures.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic devices for closing the doors of hatch Ways; and it consists in providing the said doors with a prop formed of fusible material, having its ends connected with the adjacent` parts of the door and frame thereof bynonfusible chains or equivalents, as herein set forth and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the of usual construction. l
B represents a support or holder for-holding either door in open position.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the support is of 'the form of a prop or rod whose ends engage with the doors of a hatchway, &c., or of a prop or rod one end whereof engages with the door and the other end engages with the floor or crossbearn thereof.
In Fig. 3 a support is shown as applied to the door of a building and another support as applied to a transom, window, or. door, said supports being of the form ofprops which en gage with the door and window, respectively, and the frames thereof. t
rIhe prop in' each caseis 'made of fusible separates when subjected to the actionclof fire.
Attached tothe prop are chains or connections G, of non-fusible metal or material, which are yalso attached to a proper'part of the frame and injureperson's thereon.

or other part of a building, for purposes to be hereinafter stated. l
"It willbe seen that when thedoors arerv lose their holding power, whereby the doorsV drop, thus closing the hatchway, skylight, Ste.,
with which they are connected. The separated props are further controlled bythe chains or connections C, whereby they remain suspended without liability to drop to the Hoor beneath It is evident at the invention is serviceable for doors, s utters, Src., in roofs, 85e., elevator-wells, light, air, or ventilator shafts,
and'other places requiring protection of the p order stated.
I aml aware that it is not new to'provide thedoor of ahatchway with, a support formed of ropel having a portion thereof fusible, neither is it new to support the said door byhooks connected by a fusible ring, whereby 'in case of fire the hooks are separated, thereby caus- Y ing the falling and closing of the door; but L am not aware that it is old to employaprop formed of fusible material and'having its ends connected to the adjacent portionsvof the door and the framethereof by chainsor devices of a non-fusible character for the said purpose4 until the same was employedy byme, asherein claimed, the said device herein described being simple in character and inexpensive in l cost.
Having thus described my invention, what'I jacent portions of the frame, substantially as described. j 'y FRANCIS L'. DARRACH.
