UNITED STATES BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DETTRA AND JULIUs CEASER sHIELDs,
VILIZE, ILLINOIS.
PATEN'T OFFICE.
BULLET-PROOF CASE FOR RAlLWAY-CA RS."
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,736, dated January 24, 1888. 7
Application filed September 20, 1887. Serial No. 250,237. (No model.)
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DETTRA and JULIUS CEASER SHIELDS, citizens of the United States, residing at Rushville, in the county of Schuyler and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Proof Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a device for preserving life and property from burglars and other marauders; and it consists in the use of a bullet and fire proof case, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in both the figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car broken away, showing our improvement in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the*device.
The device consists, essentially, of a metallic case or box, A, constructed of a suitable configuration, and having a door, 13, in. one portion thereof which may be opened by suitable means, and when entered may be closed from the inside against entrance from the outside. A series of holes, b, are formed in the sides and d0or,which are just the size of an ordinary revolver-barrel, the said holes being arranged in .a line and at various heights, the number thereof being regulated as is desirable. The
said case is also formed with upper and lower flanges, a a,whioh are adapted to stationarily fix the case in a vertical position by bolts passing therethrough.
OF RUSH- protection within the case and a means of defense against burglars. A number of loaded revolvers will be hung within the case at all times within ready reach of the person or persons entering the case.
The device can also be used in passenger; coaches, and may be situated in a corner near one of the doors and form a defense at this point. I
The device may be also used in banks and other places of safe deposit and in'baggage and expresscars. -V
Having thus described our invention, we claim----.
I The herein-described metallic casehaving the upper and lower securing-flanges, a,the
entrance-door, the said door and a portion of the sides thereof being provided with a series of loop holes for insertion of a pistol or revolver barrel from theinside, for the purposes set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afifixed our. signatures in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN DETTRA. JULIUS CEASEB SHIELDS.
Witnesses:
