Abstract

A removable unitary attachment for a comb in which parallel extending elongate structures are secured in back-to-back relation for receiving the comb teeth therebetween, the structures having a covering of cotton or other appropriate abosrbent material so that by simply running the comb through the hair, the material of the structures will serve to clean out oily hair sprays, cut-off hair, and the like, and upon detachment from the comb will clean the comb teeth.

5 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures 1 APPLICATOR AND COMB CLEANER ATTACHMENT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to a comb attachment.

In the prior art there are a number of devices which can be attached to or combined with a comb for use as an applicator in treating the hair, cleaning'the hair, and l the like, and which upon being removed will leave the comb in a clean condition.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to an applicator and cleaning attachment for a comb, and is more particularly concerned with improvements in such a device as will increase its efficiency of operation, and facilitate its attachment to a normal comb structure.

It is one object of the herein described invention to provide an improved applicator and cleaning attachment for a comb, which is simple and inexpensive to construct, easily attached and removed, and which is efficient in operation for the purpose intended.

A further object is to provide an improved compact applicator and cleaning attachment for a comb in which a pair of elongate pad structures are secured together in back-to-back relation by interlinking fastening means so as to provide confronting interfaces for the reception of the comb teeth therebetween.

Another object is to provide in an attachment of the character described, a pair of unique absorbent pad structures having internal longitudinally extending rigidifying core members, and wherein the pad structures are secured in back-to-back relation by fastening means which extends through the core members.

Still another object is to provide an applicator and cleaning attachment of unitary construction with a pair of elongate pad structures adapted, when attached to a comb, to extend along opposite sides thereof, and which has means on the confronting faces of the pad structures for augmenting holding engagement with the comb teeth.

Further objects of the invention will be brought out in the following part of the specification, wherein detailed description is for the purpose of fully disclosing the invention without placing limitations thereon.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only:

FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a comb with an attachment embodying the features of the present invention applied thereto;

FIG. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken substantially on line 2-2 of FIG. 1 and showing details of construction of the attachment structure according to the present invention.

FIG. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of FIG. 2, to show the means for augmenting holding engagement of the attachment with the comb; and

FIG. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the details of construction of one of the paper core members as embodied in the pad structure.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring more specifically to the drawings, the applicator and comb cleaner attachment, as generally indicated at A, is shown in FIG. 1 as being mounted in its operative position upon a conventional comb B with its elongate pad structures 10a and 10b positioned on opposite sides of the comb adjacent the juncture of the 0 comb body or back portion 11 and the integral comb teeth 12 extending therefrom.

Each of the pad structures 10a and 10b are similarly constructed, and comprise an inner core member 13 which is best shown in FIG. 4 as comprising a laminated structure formed from strips of paper or other suitable material to provide an elongate flat side member 14 and an opposite side member 15 having a longitudinally extending bowed portion 16 with

marginal edge portions

17 and 18 bonded to the marginal edge portions of the flat side member 14.

A core member constructed in the manner just described is economically produced by separating the corrugations of a backed corrugated sheet.

The core member of each pad structure is covered with an outer layer 19 of cotton or other suitable absorbent compressive material.

The two pad structures 10a and 10b are loosely secured together in confronting relation by means of one or more staple members 20 formed of a suitable metal, plastic or other relatively rigid material. As shown in FIG. 1, one of these staples may be positioned at each end of the secured pad structures, and as shown in FIG. 2 extends through and pierces the core member of each pad structure. As thus secured, it will be observed that the flat side members 14 of the secured pad structures are in confronting relation so as to uniformly provide a backing surface for the confronting layer portions of the material in the layer 19. Interface surfaces 21a and 21b are thus provided to define an area between the connected pad structures which will receive the comb teeth therebetween, when the attachment is mounted on the comb.

In order to facilitate the mounting of the attachment and entrance of the teeth ends between the interlinked pad structures, liner strips 22a and 22b are provided along the upper confronting surface marginal portions of the interface surfaces. These strips are of paper or othersuitable material and are preferably outwardly curved as indicated at 23a and 23b so as to initially guide the teeth to a position between the pad structures.

In mounting the attachment on the comb, the teeth will tend to push the adjacent portions of the cotton layer outwardly and slightly compress the material. This action serves to frictionally hold the attachment onto the comb during the applicator procedures as well as cleaning procedures of the hair. However, provision is made for augmenting the holding effect by providing a series of projections along the upper marginal portions of each liner strip, which in this case are shown as comprising bulges or dimples 24 which may enter between the teeth and thus augment the holding action.

The attachment of the present invention as herein described provides an inexpensive item which can be economically produced and sold at a reasonable price in large quantities. It is easily attached to a conventional comb structure, and when so attached provides a very efficient means for the cleaning out of oily hair, sprays, cut-off hair and the like, and upon detachment from the comb will clean the comb teeth and upon detachment may be easily discarded.

From the foregoing description, it is believed that it will be appreciated that the heretofore outlined objects of the invention will be attained, and that the attachment embodying the described features provides inherent advantages in the carrying out of the intended use of an applicator and comb cleaner.

Various modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence, I do not wish to be restricted to the specific forms shown or uses mentioned, except to the extent indicated in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A comb attachment, comprising:

a. a pair of elongate pad structures of a comprsssible absorbent material, each of the pad structures having an inner longitudinally extending rigidifying core member; and

b. fastening means piercing said core members and interlinking the pad structures in substantially parallel relation with inner confronting surfaces of said pads being resiliently engaged and defining therebetween a longitudinally extending area for the reception of the teeth of an associated comb, whereby the confronting surfaces will be spread apart and resiliently and snugly engaged with substantial portions of the comb teeth.

2. A comb attachment according to claim 1, wherein the core member is of tubular configuration.

3. A comb attchment according to claim 1, in which the core member has one side formed by a flat strip of material, and an opposite side formed by a transversely bowed strip having marginal edge portions bonded to the marginal edge portions of said flat strip.

4. A comb attachment according to claim 3, in which the interlinked pad structures are oriented with the said one sides of their core members in confronting relation.

5. A comb attachment according to claim 3, wherein the core member is of a paper material.

Claims

1. A comb attachment, comprising: a. a paIr of elongate pad structures of a comprsssible absorbent material, each of the pad structures having an inner longitudinally extending rigidifying core member; and b. fastening means piercing said core members and interlinking the pad structures in substantially parallel relation with inner confronting surfaces of said pads being resiliently engaged and defining therebetween a longitudinally extending area for the reception of the teeth of an associated comb, whereby the confronting surfaces will be spread apart and resiliently and snugly engaged with substantial portions of the comb teeth.
