Abstract
Workpiece clamping means for use with sewing machines for the purpose of topstitching joined and subsequently turned layers of workpiece cuts such as cuffs or similar workpiece parts for garments. The workpiece clamping means are provided with a plurality of individually spring-mounted clamping units for clamping the workpiece parts at their external zones. For inserting the joined and turned workpiece parts into the workpiece clamping means, there is provided a device for receiving and inserting. Furthermore, the workpiece clamping means are suitable for use in an automatic sewing device, in which solely the insertion of the workpiece parts is made manually, whereas the top stitching, the cutting-off of the thread chain between two neighbouring workpiece parts, the removing from the clamping means and the stacking is carried out sutomatically. The workpiece clamping means may be developed in such a manner, that they may be used with an adjustable rotary table, thus offering the possibility of adjusting simultaneously all workpiece clamping means on the rotary table to a desired workpiece size by means of a central adjusting device.

Furthermore, the workpiece clamping means are suitable for use in an automatic sewing device, in which solely the insertion ofthe workpiece parts is made manually, whereas the top stitching, the cutting-off of the thread chain between two neighbouring workpiece parts, the removing from the clamping means and the stacking is carried out sutomatically. The workpiece clamping means may be developed in such a manner, that they may be used with an adjustable rotary table, thus offering the possibility of adjusting simultaneously all workpiece clamping means on the rotary table to a desired workpiece size by means of a central adjusting device.

In the manufacture of cuffs and similar articles for shirts, it is often desired to provide these articles, consisting of two fabric layers and a stiffening material, with a top stitched seam close by the marginal zone of said articles, after their joining and turning, for the purpose of obtaining a more pleasing appearance of the shirt, or/ and for preventing the fabric layers from getting out of place at the edges.
As far as is known, in the past, such top stitching of articles for shirts was made in the usual manner by manually guiding the article below the needle of a sewing machine. In using this manual working method, it was customary to stiffen the parts by means of a heating press before top stitching, in order to obtain a faultless product. Tests have shown, that only by neglecting the quality of the product, it is possible to use the sewing devices known from U.S. Pat. Nos. 3 405 670 and 3 407 759 for joining two or more fabric layers, and for top stitching these joined and subsequently turned cuffs or collars. This deficiency is due to the construction of the workpiececlamping means used in these known devices, and especially to the fact, that when using these workpiece clamping means, the workpieces are only clampable in such a manner that the lateral edges of a workpiece project from the clamping plates. It may be practicable to insert the turned workpiece part into the opened workpiece clamping means in such a manner that after closing the same, the fabric layers of the workpiece can not get out of place relative to each other, in order to get an unobjectionalbe workpiece edge. However, the manual labor required for this operation would eliminate the rationalization, which is expected from the use of an automatic sewing device for manufacturing garments.
It would likewise be unprofitable, if for the purpose of preventing the difficult manipulations, the turned workpiece parts were pressed by means of a separate heated press before inserting into the usual workpiece clamping means of the known sewing devices in order to stiffen the marginal edges, to thus prevent difficult manipulations.
It is the primary object of this invention to provide means for economically manufacturing cuffs, collars and similar workpiece parts for garments.
It is further object of this invention to provide means for facilitating the top stitching of joined and subsequently turned layers of workpiece cuts, such as cuffs or similar workpiece parts for garments, at their marginal edges.
It is a further object of this invention to provide improved clamping means for top stitching workpiece parts of the indicated kind by means of a sewing machine.
It is an object of this invention to provide means for inserting the workpiece parts into the clamping means.
It is still another object of this invention to provide an automatic sewing device with means for top stitching workpiece parts for garments, thread cutting means and stacker means for automatically manufacturing in a continuous sequence.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The installation comprises a driven rotary table 1, device 2 for receiving and inserting workpieces 42 into the workpiece clamp holder means 4 arranged on the rotary table 1, a sewing machine 5 for top stitching the workpieces 42, which is freely movable in a horizontal plane, a thread cutting device 6 for severing the thread chains between two workpieces 42, and an automatic device 7 for removing and stacking the manipulated workpieces 42. v
The rotary table 1 is formed by a hexagonal rotary block 8 carried by a hollow shaft 9, and six segments 10, movably supported on guide rods 11. The guide rods 11 are inserted and fixed in the rotary block 8. Pivoted to the latter is a crank disk 12 formed with a toothed rim 12, which meshes with a gear pinion l3 pivoted in the rotary block 8. The gear pinion 13 is rotatable by meansof a tool. Inserted in the crank disk 12 are a number ofcrank pins 14 corresponding to the number of segments 10. I-Iinged to the crank pins 14 are connecting rods 15, the free ends of which are received in lugs 16 provided on the segments 10. When turning the crank disk 12, all segments move uniformly and radially from the center outwards.
The hollow shaft 9 is pivoted in a frame. Only one arm 17 for supporting the sewing machine 5, and a jib 18 carrying the thread cutting device 6, are shown in the drawing (FIG. 1).
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 12, each segment carries workpiece clamp holder means 4 for a right and and a left half of a workpiece 42. Each workpiece clamp holder means 4 is provided with a left lower workpiece clamping plate 19 secured to the segment 10, and a symmetrically constructed right lower workpiece clamping plate 19 screwed to the neighboring segment 10', a left lifting plate 20 and a symmetrically constructed right lifting plate 20. The lifting plates 20, 20 are pivoted on the lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19'. For this purpose, there are provided bearing blocks 21 (FIGS. 8, 9, l0 and 12) secured to the lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19 by means of screws 22. An axle is clamped and received in the bearing blocks 21 by means of clamping slots 24 and screws 25 (FIG.9). Pivoted to the ends of the axle 23, projecting at both sides from the bearing block 21, are two supporting members 26, which are secured to the lifting plates 20, 20' by means of screws 27.
Secured to each lifting plate 20, 20 by means of screws 29 is a lifter bar 28 straightened to the axis of the hollow shaft 9 and carrying on its free end a roller 30 (FIG. 2). Axial movably supported in the hollow shaft 9 (FIG. 1) is a rod 31 carrying a segment plate 32, which lies over the rollers 30 of the lifter bars 28. The segment plate 32 is dimensioned in such a manner, that, when operating the rod 31 downwardly via the rollers 30, four lifter bars 28 are pressed downwardly, thereby also operating four lifting plates 20, 20 against the tension of pressure springs 33 (FIGS. 2, 10, 12) located between the segments 10, 10' and the lifting plates 20, 20'.
A clamping rail 34 bridges the lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19' and is movably and clampably supported in the same (FIGS. 8, 9, 11). For this purpose, the clamping rail 34 is provided on both ends with slots 35 for receiving T-shaped slide pieces 36 (FIG. 8), which are fastened to the lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19' by means of screws 37. The clamping rail 34 has a workpiece supporting surface 38 formed by a gib 40, which is secured to the clamping rail 34 by means of rivets 39. The front edge of the rail 34 serves as a bearing surface 41 (FIG. 9) for the workpiece 42. In the present case, a cuff for a mens shirt is illustrated. The gib is movably received in grooves 43 (FIG. 11) provided in the lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19.
Hinged by means of plate springs 44 to the clamping rail 34 are carrying brackets 45, which are secured by means of screws 46 to an intermediate piece 47, riveted to the plate springs 44 (FIGS. 8 and 11).
Secured by means of screws 48 (FIG. 8) to the carrying brackets is a rail 49 carrying individually springmounted clamping units 50. Each clamping unit 50 has a clamp lever 51 (FIGS. 8 to 11), which is connected to a holding plate 54 by means of a flat spring 52 secured to the clamp lever 51 by means of rivets 53, The holding plate 54 is secured to the rail 49 by means of screws 55 and carries two adjustable set screws 56 acting upon two tongues 57, with whichthe flat spring 52 is formed. In the holding plate 54 is arranged a bore 58, through which passes a carrier bolt 59 adjustably screwed into the clamp lever 51 and secured against ro- When raised, the lifting plates 20, 20' rest against said stop screw 64.
Secured to the lifting plates 20, 20' by means of screws are limiting means 66 (FIGS. 10 to 12), into which are inserted adjustable thrust bolts 67 secured by means of a nut 68 and extending through a recess 69,
I in order to impart a pressure to the rail 49.
As shown in FIGS. 1, 11 and 12, in an angular relation to the individually spring-mounted clamping units 50 carried ba the rail 49, there are provided additional side clamping units 70, 70' carried by the lifting plates 20, 20. Here, the rail 49 carrying the clamping units 50, is replaced by means of a distance piece 71 screwed by means of screws 72 to the lifting plates 20, 20'. The side clamping units 70,70 are mounted to said distance piece 71 in a manner, shown in FIG. 10. Screwed tothe lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19' are adapting pieces 73 having a bearing edge 74 according to the lateral edges of the workpiece, and which are so arranged as to form a supporting surface 75 (FIG. 12) for a workpiece. The downwardly angled part of the clamp levers 76 is also formed in accordance with the lateral edges of the workpieces, in the present embodiment roundings denoted as A.
The device 2 for receiving the workpiece and inserting it into the workpiece clamping units (FIG. 1) is arranged on a supporting arm 77 pivoted about the axis of the rotary table 1. As shwon in FIGS. 2 to 4, the supporting arm 77 carries on its free end a flange 78, to which is secured a bearing block 79. Inserted in the bearing block 79 are two supporting rods 80 secured by means of screws 81. A carrier 82 is supported by the supporting rods 80 and movably arranged thereon by means of an air cylinder 83. In the arms 84 of the carrier 82, there is pivoted a shaft 85 carrying at its end an one-armed actuating lever 86, to which is hinged the piston rod 87 of a pneumatic cylinder 88 mounted on the carrier 82 by means of a bearing block 89 and a connection angle 90. Clamped to the shaft 85 are two further clamping levers 91. The free ends of the latter receive clampably a bar 92 supporting a swiveling member 93, which is movable against two oppositely acting pressure springs 94 from a' neutral position, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, into a plane extending vertically in relation to the direction of movement of the carrier 82. Furthermore, secured to the swivelling member 93 by means of winged screws 95 is an interchangeable sword 96 formed at its three edges with a beveling 97 (FIGS. 13, 14) for receiving the cuff 42.
Secured to the supporting arm 77 is an angle plate 98 (FIGS. 2 and 3) carrying an air cylinder 99, to the piston rod 100 of which is fixed a follower means 101 guided in a bushing 102. The follower means 101 can be operated into the path of motion of a striker bar 103 arranged on each segment 10. A bearing member 104 determining the inital position of the supporting arm 77, is secured to a bar 105, which is arranged on the support member of the device (not shown). The supporting arm 77 is pressed against the bearing member 104 under the tension of a retracting spring 106 between the angle plate 98 and the bar 105.
An adjusting lever 107 is clamped to the shaft 85 and the bar 92. The free arm of the adjusting lever 107 carries an adjusting screw 108 (FIG. 4) supported on the carrier 82 and secured against rotation by means of a nut 109 (FIG. 2).
The thread cutting device indicated in FIG. by the reference numeral 7 is shown in FIGS. 5 to 7 on an enlarged scale. Pivoted about an axis lll of the part of a frame (not shown) forming the jib 18, is a hinged arm 110 swingable in an horizontal plane. Afurther hinged arm 112 is clamped by means of a clamping screw 113 to a shaft 114 rotatably received in the free end of the hinged arm 110. Clamped to the shaft 114 is a lever 115 receiving one free end of a tension spring 116, while the other end of the latter is suspended in the jib 18.
Hinged at 117 to the hinged arm 112 is a movable beam 118 having two pivoted rollers 119, which bear, under the tension of the tension spring 116, against the external edges 1200f the segments '10, Screwed to the angle pieces 122, mounted to the beam 118 by means of screws 121, are adjustable stop screws 123, which are secured against'rotation by means of check nuts124. At one end of the beam 118 is arranged an engaging piece 126 operable into the path of motion of the striker bar 103 by means of an air cylinder 125. Two thread cutters are arranged on the movable beam 118 and comprise substantially a movable cutting blade 127 (FIGS. 6,7), a fixed counterknife 128, a knive carrier 129 and an air cylinder 130. The cutting blade 127 is pivoted against the tension of a torsion spring 132 about a shoulder stud 131 arranged on the counterknife 128 and the knife carrier 129. Hinged to the cutting blade 127 is a rod 133 having a thread 134 andextending through a bore 136 provided in a guide plate 135. Screwed to the thread 134 are two nuts 137, 138. The nut 137 serves as a stop and is secured against twisting by the nut 138. The knife carrier 129 is clamped to the piston rod 139 of the cylinder 130 and provided with a guide rod 140 slidable in a bore of the guide plate 135. The cylinder 130 and the guide plate 135 are secured to a clamping member 141, movably and swingably secured by means of a clamping screw 143 to a L-shaped bar 142. The free end of the holding bar 143 is also movably and swingably received in a second clamping member 144, which is 'rotatably screwed about a screw 145 to the movable beam 118. The lower workpiece clamping plates 19, 19' are provided with a recess 146 (FIGS. 5, 6 and 12) for the free passage of the knives 127 and 128 when the latter are in a raised position. Furthermore, thread guides 147 are provided on the workpiece clamping plates 19, 19' for receiving the thread chains 148 located between two workpieces 42 (FIGS. 5 and 7).
The sewing machine 5 (FIG. 1) as well as its arrangement and cooperation with the rotary table 1 and guide patterns (not shown)'need no further description since they are disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3 407 759.
The above also concerns'the removing and stacking device 7 (FIG. 1) performing four motions, andprovided in known manner with a grill-like movable pick-up 149 for the workpieces 42,:a stationary and vertically arranged grill-like aligning :part 150 for laterally aligning the workpieces 42, .anda workpiece carrier 151.
Such a device is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3 159 122.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The cuff 42, consisting of an upper fabric layer 152 (FIGS. 13 to 15), a lower fabric layer 153 and an interlining material 154, which parts have been sewed together by means of a double chain stitch seam, is turned over and drawn up to the sword 96 (FIG. 2), raised about by means of the pneumatic cylinder 88 in such a manner, that the sword lies between the interlining material andits folded edge 156 (FIG. 13). The threads of the double chain stitch seam 155 are thus positioned at the beveling 97 of the sword 96.
When charging the air cylinder 88 (FIGS. 2 and 4), the clamping lever 86 is moved by means of the extending piston rod 87 and thus rotating the shaft 85. Also the clamping levers 91 with the swiveling member 93 and the adjusting lever 107 are moved thereby until the adjusting screw 108 rests against the carrier 82, so that the sword 96 disposedon the carrier 82, together with the drawn-up workpiece 42 is brought into a horizontal position.
When charging the air cylinder 83, the carrier 82 is displaced on the supporting rods 80 towards the center of the rotary table 1, and the sword 96 with the cuff moves into the workpiece clamp holder means 4, while the lifting plates 20, 20' and clamp levers 51 and 76 are in a lifted position.
After inserting the cuff 42 into the workpiece clamp holder means 4, the lifting'plates 20, 20' are moved by lifting the rod 31 (FIG. 1) and therewith the segment plate 32 by means of the set screw 33 (FIG. 10) about the axis 23, so that the clamping levers 51 and 76 are pressed upon the marginal zones of the cuff 42, wherein the sword 96 is still positioned, thereafter the sword 96 is operated into its normal position by charging the pneumatic cylinder 88, for loading a new cuff 42.
During this operation, the rotary table 1, which is in an inoperative position during the loading cycle, moves the clamped'workpiece 42 under the needle 157 (FIG. 15) of the sewing machine and forming the top stitch seam to the thread cutting device 6 (FIG. 1) for severing the thread chains 148 formed between the two workpieces 42, which are positioned in two neichbouring workpiece clamp holder means 4. Prior to the inoperative position of the rotary table 1, the striker bar 103 is moved against the engaging piece 126 extended by means of the compressed air cylinder 125, thus operating the knives 127, 128 of the movable thread cutter into a predetermined position maintained also when the rotary table 1 does not stop in the predetermined position. The beam 118 supported on the hinged arms and 112 and movable between the two stop screws 123, is taken along by means of the striker bar 103.
At this time, the cylinders (FIG.'6) are actuated. The pistonrods 139 of the latter lift the knife carrier 129, so that the two knives 127, 128 can pass the recesses 146 in the segment l0,'in order to engage andcut off the thread chain 148. The movable cutting blade 127.is.actuated when the nut 137 arranged'on the rod 133 bears against the guide plate and the knife carrier 129 continues to be lifted. After this, the .Cuffr42 positioned at the device 7 for removing and stacking, is released by lifting the clamp levers 51, 76. It isthen drawn upon the pick-up 149 by means of the workpiece carrier 151, lowered by the pick-up to apileandaligned by means of the rods of the aligningpart by removing the rods of the pick-up 149 below the workpiece 42.
The clamp levers 51, 76 are lifted by the segment plate 32, the lifter bars 28 and the lifting plates 20, 20' bear against the stop screws 64 (FIG. 8) and swing the carrying brackets 45 about the plate spring 44. The rail 49 with the holding plates 54 is thereby lifted. The clamp levers 51 (FIG. 10) hinged to the holding plates 54 by means of flat springs 52, are also lifted after bearing of the holding plates 54 on the heads of the carrier bolts 59. In this condition, the workpiece clamp holder means 4 in front of the device 7 for removing and stacking. moves together with the rotary table 1 to the device 2 for receiving and inserting. Prior to reaching the-end position in the range of the device 2 for receiving and inserting, the striker bar 103 (FIGS. 1 to 3) rests against the follower means 101, extended by means of the air cylinder 99. The supporting arm 77 ro tatable about the axis of the rotary table 1, is taken along by the rotary table 1 against the tension of the retracting spring 106. This stopping connection 101, 103 causes the sword 96 to be moved without any difficulty into the workpiece clamp holder means 4, should the rotary table 1 not stop at the provided position as a result of its slowing down. Further occurring inaccuracies in aligning the sword 96 are balanced by moving of the swiveling member 93 together with the sword 96 along the bar 92 in both directions against the tension of the pressure springs 94. The contact pressure of the individual clamp levers imparted to a workpieceis adjustable by means of adjustable screws 56 acting upon the tongues 57 of the flat spring 52.
The device can be modified for handling workpieces of another length by turning the gear pinion 13 (P18. 1). The crank disk 12 is driven thereby, thus increasing the space between the neighboring segments 10, 10' by moving outwardly the segments l0, 10' through the connecting rods 15 along the guide rods 11. Since the clamping rail 34 is displaceably supported on the lower workpiece clamping plates l9, 19', the laterally arranged clamp levers 76 can move along the clamp levers 51 until the distance between the bearing edges 74 of the angularly extending additional side clamping units 70, 70' has reached a proportion according to the length of the cuff.
What I claim is l. A device for top-stitching joined and turned cuffs or the like workpiece parts for garments, comprising, in combination, a support member, a sewing machine carried by said support member and having a work supporting bed and stitch forming means, means for guiding said workpiece parts relative to the needle of said sewing machine, workpiece clamping means for clamping a left half and a right half of said workpiece parts at their external zones, including two segments displaceably supported in a radial plane by said support member, two symmetric lower workpiece clamping plates carried by said segments, two symmetric lifting plates carried by said workpiece clamping plates, a plurality of individually spring-mounted clamping units pressing upon the external portions of said workpiece parts, a clamping rail movably and clampably received in said lower workpiece clamping plates and having a workpiece supporting surface and a bearing surface for said workpiece parts, a rail carrying said individually spring-mounted clamping units, carrying brackets secured to said rail and having an U-shaped part, said lifting plates projecting into said U-shaped part, plate springs between said carrying brackets and said clamping rail, pressure springs between said workpiece clamping plates and said lifting plates, and adjustable thrust bolts secured to said lifting plates for transmitting the spring tension of said pressure springs to said rail carrying said clamping units, and means for receiving and inserting joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamping means.
2. The combination according to claim 1, further comprising additional side clamping units secured to said two symmetric lifting plates angularly extending to said clamping units carried by said rail, adapting pieces secured to said clamping plates and having bearing edges corresponding to the side edge of said workpiece parts, the workpiece supporting surfaces at the edges of said lower workpiece clamping plates.
3. The combination according to claim 1, wherein each of said individually spring-mounted clamping units comprises a clamp lever, a holding plate secured to said rail and having a bore, a flat spring between said clamp lever and said holding plate, adjustable setscrews received in said holding plate and bearing upon said flat springs, and a carrier bolt secured to said clamp lever and passing through said bore for causing said clamp to be taken along during lifting of said rail.
4. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said additional side clamping units comprising a clamp lever, a holding plate secured to said lifting plate and having a bore, a distance piece between said holding plate and said lifting plate, a flat spring between said clamp lever and said holding plate, adjustable setscrews received in said holding plate and bearing upon said flat springs, and a carried bolt secured to said clamp lever to be taken along during lifting of said lifting plates.
5. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said means for receiving and inserting said joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamp holder means includes a carrier displaceable in the direction to said workpiece clamp holder means carried by said segments of said support member, a sword removably secured to said carrier and formed corresponding to the form of said workpiece parts, said sword having a beveling at the external zones, supporting rods for receiving said displaceable carrier, and driving means for moving said carrier on said supporting rods.
6. The combination according to claim 5, wherein said carrier is provided with two arms and said means for receiving and inserting said joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamp holder means further includes a shaft pivoted on said two arms, an actuating lever clamped to said shaft, a pneumatic cylinder for actuating said lever and said shaft, clamping levers clamped upon said shaft, a bar secured to the free ends of said levers, a swiveling member carrying said sword and slidably received on said bar, two pressure springs arranged on said bar and acting in opposite directions upon said swiveling member for holding it in a neutral position.
7. A device for top-stitching joined and turned cuffs or the like workpiece parts for garments, including,in combination, a support member, a driven shaft for vertical rotation on said support member, a rotary table carried by said shaft, workpiece clamp holder means situated on and around said rotary table for receiving said workpiece parts, a pattern-controlled sewing machine swingably secured to said support member, a device for inserting said joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamp holder means comprising a supporting arm pivoted about said driven shaft, supporting rods carried by said supporting arm, a carrier displaceably mounted on said supporting rods, driving means for moving said carrier in the direction to said workpiece clamp holder means, a sword removably secured to said carrier and formed corresponding to the form of said workpiece parts, said sword having a beveling at the external zones, means for placing said sword into a vertical position, means for the automatic alignment of saidworkpiece parts received :on said sword in conformity with one of said workpiece clamp holder means, including striker bars secured to said rotary table, a follower means situated on said supporting arm and shiftable into the path of motion of said striker bars, a bearing member determining the start position of said supporting arm, an air cylinder for actuating said follower means, and a retracting spring acting upon said supporting arm.
8. The device according to claim 7, further including thread cutting means for cutting off the threadchains between two workpiece parts after top-stitching by said sewing machine, said thread cutting means comprising a movable beam, two thread cutter units adjustablysecured tosaid movable beam, hinged arms linked to said movable beam and saidsupport member, two rollers pivoted on said movable beam, a tension spring for pressing said rollers against the peripheral area of said rotary table, an engagingpiececooperating, with said strikerbars for taking along said movable beam with 10 said rotary table, and'an air cylinder secured to said movable beam and carrying said engaging piece.
9. The device according to claim 8, comprising angle pieces secured to said movable beam, adjustable stop screws screwed in said angle pieces for limiting the rotating motion of said movable beam, and check nuts on said stop screws for securing the adjustment of said 1 stop screws.
10. The device according to claim 8, wherein each of said thread cutter units includes an air cylinder carried by said movable beam, a knife-carrier carried by the piston rod of said air cylinder, a guide plate secured to said air air cylinder and having two openings, a guide of said thread cutter units further includes a first clamping member for receivingsaid air cylinder, a L,- shaped holding rod carrying said clamping member, and a second clamping member securedvto said movable beamand carrying said. IL-shaped holding rod.
12. The device as claimed in claim 7, furtherincluding a workpiece removing and stacking devicearranged behind said thread cutting means. x
Claims (12)
1. A device for top-stitching joined and turned cuffs or the like workpiece parts for garments, comprising, in combination, a support member, a sewing machine carried by said support member and having a work supporting bed and stitch forming means, means for guiding said workpiece parts relative to the needle of said sewing machine, workpiece clamping means for clamping a left half and a right half of said workpiece parts at their external zones, including two segments displaceably supported in a radial plane by said support member, two symmetric lower workpiece clamping plates carried by said segments, two symmetric lifting plates carried by said workpiece clamping plates, a plurality of individually spring-mounted clamping units pressing upon the external portions of said workpiece parts, a clamping rail movably and clampably received in said lower workpiece clamping plates and having a workpiece supporting surface and a bearing surface for said workpiece parts, a rail carrying said individually spring-mounted clamping units, carrying brackets secured to said rail and having an U-shaped part, said lifting plates projecting into said U-shaped part, plate springs between said carrying brackets and said clamping rail, pressure springs between said workpiece clamping plates and said lifting plates, and adjustable thrust bolts secured to said lifting plates for transmitting the spring tension of said pressure springs to said rail carrying said clamping units, and means for receiving and inserting joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamping means.

The combination according to claim 1, further comprising additional side clamping units secured to said two symmetric lifting plates angularly extending to said clamping units carried by said rail, adapting pieces secured to said clamping plates and having bearing edges corresponding to the side edge of said workpiece parts, the workpiece supporting surfaces at the edges of said lower workpiece clamping plates.

The combination according to claim 1, wherein each of said individually spring-mounted clamping units comprises a clamp lever, a holding plate secured to said rail and having a bore, a flat spring between said clamp lever and said holding plate, adjustable setscrews received in said holding plate and bearing upon said flat springs, and a carrier bolt secured to said clamp lever and passing through said bore for causing said clamp to be taken along during lifting of said rail.

The combination according to claim 1, wherein said additional side clamping units comprising a clamp lever, a holding plate secured to said lifting plate and having a bore, a distance piece between said holding plate and said lifting plate, a flat spring between said clamp lever and said holding plate, adjustable setscrews received in said holding plate and bearing upon said flat springs, and a carried bolt secured to said clamp lever to be taken along during lifting of said lifting plates.

The combination according to claim 2, wherein said means for receiving and inserting said joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamp holder means includes a carrier displaceable in the direction to said workpiece clamp holder means carried by said segments of said support member, a sword removably secured to said carrier and formed corresponding to the form of said workpiece parts, said sword having a beveling at the external zones, supporting rods for receiving said displaceable carrier, and driving means for moving said carrier on said supporting rods.

The combination according to claim 5, wherein said carrier is provided with two arms and said means for receiving and inserting said joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamp holder means further includes a shaft pivoted on said two arms, an actuating lever clamped to said shaft, a pneumatic cylinder for actuating said lever and said shaft, clamping levers clamped upon said shaft, a bar secured to the free ends of said levers, a swiveling member carrying said sword and slidably received on said bar, two pressure springs arranged on said bar and acting in opposite directions upon said swiveling member for holding it in a neutral position.

A device for top-stitching joined and turned cuffs or the like workpiece parts for garments, including,in combination, a support member, a driven shaft for vertical rotation on said support member, a rotary table carried by said shaft, workpiece clamp holder means situated on and around said rotary table for receiving said workpiece parts, a pattern-controlled sewing machine swingably secured to said support member, a device for inserting said joined and turned workpiece parts into said workpiece clamp holder means comprising a supporting arm pivoted about said driven shaft, supporting rods carried by said supporting arm, a carrier displaceably mounted on said supporting rods, driving means for moving said carrier in the direction to said workpiece clamp holder means, a sword removably secured to said carrier and formed corresponding to the form of said workpiece parts, said sword having a beveling at the external zones, means for placing said sword into a vertical position, means for the automatic alignment of said workpiece parts received on said sword in conformity with one of said workpiece clamp holder means, including striker bars secured to said rotary table, a follower means situated on said supporting arm and shiftable into the path of motion of said striker bars, a bearing member determining the start position of said supporting arm, an air cylinder for actuating said follower means, and a retracting spring acting upon said supporting arm.

The device according to claim 7, further including thread cutting means for cutting off the thread chains between two workpiece parts after top-stitching by said sewing machine, said thread cutting means comprising a movable beam, two thread cutter units adjustably secured to said movable beam, hinged arms linked to said movable beam and said support member, two rollers pivoted on said movable beam, a tension spring for pressing said rollers against the peripheral area of said rotary table, an engaging piece cooperating with said striker bars for taking along said movable beam with said rotary table, and an air cylinder secured to said movable beam and carrying said engaging piece.
9. The device according to claim 8, comprising angle pieces secured to said movable beam, adjustable stop screws screwed in said angle pieces for limiting the rotating motion of said movable beam, and check nuts on said stop screws for securing the adjustment of said stop screws.
10. The device according to claim 8, wherein each of said thread cutter units includes an air cylinder carried by said movable beam, a knife-carrier carried by the piston rod of said air cylinder, a guide plate secured to said air air cylinder and having two openings, a guide rod fastened to said knife-carrier and guided in one of said openings, a fixed counterknife secured to said knife carrier, a movable cutting blade pivoted to said knive carrier, a torsion spring pressing said cutting blade against said counterknife and keeping said knives in a starting position, a rod linked to said cutting blade and guided in said second opening of said guide plate, and thread guided for said thread chains between two workpiece parts.
11. The device according to claim 10, wherein each of said thread cutter units further includes a first clamping member for receiving said air cylinder, a L-shaped holding rod carrying said clamping member, and a second clamping member secured to said movable beam and carrying said L-shaped holding rod.
12. The device as claimed in claim 7, further including a workpiece removing and stacking device arranged behind said thread cutting means.
