Description

(No Model.)
J. M. YOUNG.
PLOW WHEEL.
Patented Jan. 3,1888.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. YOUNG, or MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
PLOW-WH EEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375.789, dated January 3, 18 8.
Application filed September 13, 1887. Serial No.2t9,580. (No model.) W n i n i 7 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1', JOSEPH M. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-YVheels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a caster-wheel and devices for securing it to a plow-beam, and has for its object to simplify this class of devices and increase their efficiency and adapt them for plows in general use.
, The improvement consists in the novel features ofconstruction and combination of parts, hereinafter more fully set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the end of a plowbeam and a caster-wheel embodying my in vention; Fig. 2, a front view of the casterwheel; Fig. 3, a top plan view, parts being broken away,of the plow-beam embodying my invention; and Fig. 4, a cross-section 0n the line X X of Fig. 1.
The casterwheel A,journaled in the forked end of the standard B, supports the front end of the plow-beam C. The upper end of the standard is adapted to come beneath the plowbeam, and is provided with the bracket I), which extends up in front of and over the top of the beam. The standard is securedto the beam by the bolt D, which passes through its upper end between the fork and through the overhanging end of the bracket. That part of the bolt cl within the standard is square, and the opening through which it passes is of a corresponding shape, to effect a turning of the bolt and standard together, and that part d immediately above the bracketis square and receives the lever E, which is fitted thereto. That part of the bolt within the beam is round, to permit a free movement of the standard when swung to the right or left for guiding the plow. The lever E extends about at right angles to the caster-wheel, and is connected to the foot-lever F, pivoted between its ends to the foot-rest within convenient reach of the drivers feet, by the rod 0. The clevis G is bifurcated at its rear end, which embraces the sides of the beam, and is secured thereto by the bolts 9. The bracket b passes through the space between the bifurcations and the end of the beam, and is limited in its lateral movement by said bifurcations.
The boltis held in place by the nut m,screwed on its upper end above the lever.
The foot-lever is placed normally parallel with lever E, and a push on one end or the other thereof serves to guide the plow in the desired direction.
The caster-whcel,\vitl1 some slight changes,
' may be used as a furrow-wheel, and I do not wish to be restricted in its application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A plow-caster standard having a bracket projecting upward from its upper end, and having the upper end of the bracket extending over and parallel with the top of the standard, the upper end of the bracket and the standard having coincident openings, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, withthe plow-beam,and the casterstandard supporting the plow-beam on its upper end, which end is provided with a bracket extending up in front of and over the said plow-beam, of the bolt passing through the caster-standard, the beam, and the bracket, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the plow-beam, the caster-standard, and the bracket integral with the standard of the caster and embracing the end of the plow-beam between it and the top of the said standard, of the bolt passing vertically through the beam, standard, and bracket and interlocking with the standard, and the lever fitted to the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH M. YOUNG.
