Abstract

A cigarette holder having a base retaining a magnet element and an upstanding stem portion which cooperates with a pivotally mounted and spring-urged clamp. At least the stem and clamp being formed of metal to extinguish the cigarette when the burning end approaches the position of engagement with the clamp. The stem has a forward end that is positioned above the base in cantilevered fashion and extends in a generally horizontal direction beyond the confines of the base, terminates in a downwardly directed lip and has a pair of upstanding ears rearward of the lip and extends upwardly at least the distance of the diameter of a cigarette, said clamp has an upturned lip at the forward end thereof and a pair of depending ears mating with the ears on the stem, a pivot pin extending through said ears and a coil spring surrounding the pin and urging the forward end of the clamp into engagement with the forward end of the stem.

CIGARETTE HOLDER This invention relates to an improved cigarette holder which positively retains the cigarette and extinguishes the cigarette in the event the smoker forgetfully abandons it while lit.

The invention also relates to such a cigarette holder wherein the base member is weighted and sized such that it will support the cigarette and preferably a portion of the weight comprises a permanent magnet so that the holder may be safely employed in a magneticsusceptible material such as the dashboard of a moving vehicle.

The above recited advantages are provided by a cigarette holder which generally comprises a base of mass and cross-sectional dimensions to support the holder and associated cigarette, a stern member of curvilinear configuration, means connecting one end of the stem member to the base member such that the other end is positioned in cantilevered relation over the base, the other end of the stem member having a depending lip and a pair of upstanding ears positioned rearwardly thereof at least the distance equal to the diameter of a cigarette, a pivotal clamp, said clamp having an upturned end portion and a pair of depending ears adapted to mate with the upstanding ears on the stem, a pivot pin connecting the stem carried ears and the clamp carried ears and spring means normally urging the end of the clamp into engagement with the end of the stem.

The invention will be more specifically described in association with the accompanying drawing wherein FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the improved cigarette holder with a cigarette shown in phantom lines;

FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the structure shown in FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is an enlarged, exploded perspective view of the clamp portion of the cigarette holder;

FIG. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of FIG. 2; and

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view on line 5--5 of FIG. 2.

Referring to the drawing generally designates my improved cigarette holder. The cigarette holder generally comprises a base 12 and upstanding curvilinear stem member 14. The stem member 14 is connected at end 16 to the base 12 and the opposite end 18 has a downwardly curve lip 19. Rearwardly of the lip 19 the stem is provided with a hinge half 20 including a pair of upstanding ears 22 bored to receive a pivot pin 24 as to be more fully described hereinafter.

Cooperating with the extended end of the stem member 14 is a pivotal clamp generally designated 26. Clamp 26 has an upturned lip 28 corresponding to lip 19 of the stem 14. The clamp member 26 includes hinge half 30 provided with depending ears 32 each of which is also bored and each receives the pivot pin 24. A spring 34 of the helical type is fitted about the pivot pin 24 between the inner surfaces of the ears 22-32 and normally maintains the clamp in the position illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing with the end 36 pivoted away from the curved stem 14.

In operation, end 36 of the clamp 26, is pressed downwardly to open the jaws to receive a cigarette or the like indicated at 38 in broken lines. Upon release of the clamp the cigarette 38 is firmly held in the cigarette holder.

As more clearly shown in FIG. 1,2, & 5 the upper portion of the base 12 may have an artistic design formed thereon or as will be apparent to those skilled in the art the exposed upper surface may receive various artistic emblems and the like without departing from the scope of the present invention.

The base portion 12 is formed hollow as shown in FIGS. 2 & 5 and the recess 42 is adapted to receive a magnet 44. The magnet is maintained in the base 12 by,

for example, glue, solder, or by press fitting.

The magnet 44 has a flat undersurface 46 and the magnet is of a depth corresponding to the side wall of the bored recess 42.

The magnet 44 has a dual function as it provides a heavy mass to stabilize the cigarette holder when the holder rests upon non-magnetic material and a second function which permits the holder to rest upon, for example, the dashboard of an automobile, and to remain where placed even when the vehicle is in motion.

It will be appreciated that by constructing at least the clamp 26 and the extended cooperating end 18 of the stem 14 of metal if the smoker leaves a lighted cigarette in the holder the cigarette will be extinguished when the burning front is in the vicinity of zone A of FIG. 1 of the drawing as the metal removes the heat from the cigarette and lowers the cigarette to a temperature below its kindling point.

I claim:

l. A cigarette holder generally comprising a base adapted to be seated on a substantially horizontal surface and supported thereby, a stem member of curvilinear configuration attached to and supported in a vertical position by said base, said stem member having a lower end portion and an upper end portion, means connecting the lower end portion of the stem member to the base so that the stem is positioned in cantilevered relation over the base with the upper end portion extending forwardly of the base beyond the lower end portion, said upper end portion being generally disposed in a horizontal plane substantially parallel with the base supporting surface, said upper end portion being substantially flat and having an outer and an inner end with the outer end terminating in a downwardly curved lip, said upper end portion of the stem member having opposing side edges and a pair of complemental apertured upstanding ears provided on the side edges and positioned rearwardly of the lip at least the distance equal to the diameter of a cigarette, a substantially flat clamp bar overlying the upper end portion of the stem member and being of a length slightly greater than the upper end portion with said clamp bar having an outer end provided with an upwardly curved lip complementarily overlying the lip on the outer end portion of the stem member and having an inner end portion extending rearwardly of the inner end of the outer end portion of the stem member, said clamp bar having a pair of depending ears adapted to mate with the upstanding ears on the outer end portion of the stem member, a pivot pin connecting the stem carried ears and the clamp bar carried ears, spring means normally urging the outer lip ends of the clamp bar and the outer end portion of the stern member into engagement, said inner end portion of the clamp bar being manually depressable downwardly toward the stem to overcome the spring force and move such lip ends apart and said base having means for retaining it in a stem and cigarette supporting position on the supporting surface.

2. The invention defined in claim 1 wherein the stem member and the clamp bar of the cigarette holder are fabricated from metal so that a lighted cigarette clampingly held between the outer end portion of the stem and the clamp bar will be extinguished when the burning end approaches such parts.

Claims (2)

1. A cigarette holder generally comprising a base adapted to be seated on a substantially horizontal surface and supported thereby, a stem member of curvilinear configuration attached to and supported in a vertical position by said base, said stem member having a lower end portion and an upper end portion, means connecting the lower end portion of the stem member to the base so that the stem is positioned in cantilevered relation over the base with the upper end portion extending forwardly of the base beyond the lower end portion, said upper end portion being generally disposed in a horizontal plane substantially parallel with the base supporting surface, said upper end portion being substantially flat and having an outer and an inner end with the outer end terminating in a downwardly curved lip, said upper end portion of the stem member having opposing side edges and a pair of complemental apertured upstanding ears provided on the side edges and positioned rearwardly of the lip at least the distance equal to the diameter of a cigarette, a substantially flat clamp bar overlying the upper end portion of the stem member and being of a length slightly greater than the upper end portion with said clamp bar having an outer end provided with an upwardly curved lip complementarily overlying the lip on the outer end portion of the stem member and having an inner end portion extending rearwardly of the inner end of the outer end portion of the stem member, said clamp bar having a pair of depending ears adapted to mate with the upstanding ears on the outer end portion of the stem member, a pivot pin connecting the stem carried ears and the clamp bar carried ears, spring means normally urging the outer lip ends of the clamp bar and the outer end portion of the stem member into engAgement, said inner end portion of the clamp bar being manually depressable downwardly toward the stem to overcome the spring force and move such lip ends apart and said base having means for retaining it in a stem and cigarette supporting position on the supporting surface.

2. The invention defined in claim 1 wherein the stem member and the clamp bar of the cigarette holder are fabricated from metal so that a lighted cigarette clampingly held between the outer end portion of the stem and the clamp bar will be extinguished when the burning end approaches such parts.
