Abstract

A garment securer uses a strip of material fastened to the middle of the inside of the back of the garment above the crossbar of a supporting hanger with the free end of the strip hanging downward. A two-part fastener is arranged on the fixed end and the free end of the strip so the free end can be looped over a hanger cross-bar and secured to the fixed end to hold the garment on the hanger and identify the garment.

Part of the problem is accidental mixup of coats that are similar in appearance.

The invention involves recognition of a simple and expedient way of securing a garment to a hanger and identifying the garment conspicuously to reduce the chances of its being removed. The invention aims at simplicity, economy, convenience, and effectiveness in a garment securer.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The inventive garment securer uses a strip of material having a fixed end fastened to the inside of the back of the garment between its shoulders and above the region of the cross-bar of a hanger supporting the garment. The strip has a free end hanging down below the hanger cross-bar, and a two-part fastener is arranged on the fixed end and the free end so the free end can be looped over the hanger cross-bar and secured to the fixed end. The strip preferably contains a pocket for a name tag or message, and the two-part fastener is preferably formed of pile hooks and loops.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION A preferred embodiment of the inventive garment securer as shown in the drawings is formed as a strip of material 10 having a fixed end 11 that is preferably stitched to the inside of the back of garment 12 be tween the shoulders of garment R2, and above the re gion of the region of the cross-bar 13 of a hanger supporting the garment. End 11 can be stitched directly to the garment or to the garments lining, or can be secured in place by other means. Strip 110 is preferably formed of sheet plastic material for strength and economy, although cloth, leather, or other materials can also be used.

Strip 10 preferably has a side opening pocket 14 for containing a name tag 15 or other message identifying the owner or alerting people not to take the garment. Pocket M can be conveniently formed in plastic strip 10 between fusion lines 16 joining together two plies of strip 110.

The fixed end ll of strip 10 carries half of a two-part fastener 17 and the other half 18 is arranged on the free end of stip l hanging down below hanger cross bar 13. Then the free end of strip can be looped up over the hanger cross-bar l3 and secured to fixed end 11 by joining fastener parts 117 and 181. The preferred twopart fastener 11'! and 18 is formed of pile hooks and loops, but a button and loop, button and eyelet, hook and grommet, snapfastener, zipper, or other fastener can also be used.

When the garment is left on a hanger, the free end of strip is secured to the fixed end over the hanger cross-bar 13 as shown in FIG. 2 so that it is necessary to undo fastener parts l7 and 18 to remove the garment from the hanger. At the same time, such secured orientation of strip Ml exposes name tag 15 to view so that the garment is readily identifiable both to its owner and others. Since fastener parts 17 and 118 can be undone easily, the owner of the garment can conveniently remove it from the hanger when he desires. A deliberate thief could also remove the garment, but the invention greatly reduces the chances for accidental mixups in one person mistakenly taking another persons garment.

Persons wishing to practice the invention should remember that other embodiments and variations can be adapted to particular circumstances. Even though one point of view is necessarily chosen in describing and defining the invention, this should not inhibit broader or related embodiments going beyond the semantic orientation of this application but falling within the spirit of the invention. For example, those skilled in the art will understand the materials, fasteners, and application of the inventive garment securer to :a wide variety of garments.

I claim:

ll. A garment securer attachable to a garment for securing said garment to a hanger having a cross bar, said securer comprising:

a. a flexible strip of material;

b. means for fastening the upper fixed end of said strip to the inside of the back of said garment between the shoulders of said garment and above the region of said hanger cross-bar with the lower free end of said strip hanging down below said cross-bar region;

c. one part of'a two-part fastener being arranged on said fixed end of said strip to face forward from said inside back of said garment above said crossbar region; and

d. the other part of said two-part fastener being arranged on said free end of said strip to face forward from said inside back of said garment below said cross-bar region so said free end can be looped up over said cross-bar and secured to said fixed end.

2. The garment securer of claim l wherein said strip has a pocket for a name tag or message.

3. The garment securer of claim 1 wherein said fastener is formed of pile hooks and] loops.

4. The garment securerof claim 1 wherein said strip is formed of sheet plastic material.

5. The garment securer of claim ll wherein stitching secures said fixed end of said strip to said garment.

Claims

1. A garment securer attachable to a garment for securing said garment to a hanger having a cross bar, said securer comprising: a. a flexible strip of material; b. means for fastening the upper fixed end of said strip to the inside of the back of said garment between the shoulders of said garment and above the region of said hanger cross-bar with the lower free end of said strip hanging down below said crossbar region; c. one part of a two-part fastener being arranged on said fixed end of said strip to face forward from said inside back of said garment above said cross-bar region; and d. the other part of said two-part fastener being arranged on said free end of said strip to face forward from said inside back of said garment below said cross-bar region so said free end can be looped up over said cross-bar and secured to said fixed end.

2. The garment securer of claim 1 wherein said strip has a pocket for a name tag or message.

3. The garment securer of claim 1 wherein said fastener is formed of pile hooks and loops.

4. The garment securer of claim 1 wherein said strip is formed of sheet plastic material.

5. The garment securer of claim 1 wherein stitching secures said fixed end of said strip to said garment.
