SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,505, dated December 27, 1887, Application filed OctoberlO, i887. Serial No. 252,889. (No model.)-
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARSHALL `BUR PALMER and CLARK SALATHIEL MUDGE, of Germantown, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Permutation-Padlock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Ourinvention relates to padlocks, the ob-V ject of the invention being to provide a permutation-lock which shall be of simple construction, but which will be strong, serviceable, and safe in that it cannot be tampered with by unauthorized parties. These objects we accomplish by means of the novel construction to be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
view withone of the outer side plates and its connections removed. Fig. 3 is a view ofthe inner face of one of the side plates and its connections. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bow or shackle which we employ in connection with our improved form of lock; and Fig. 5 is a central sectional View of the lock, taken on line a: of Fig. 1.
In constructing such a lock as the one forming the subjectmatter of this application we provide a main frame, 10, the side faces of which are recessed, as shown at 11, to receive disks 12, that are formedl with slots 13, said slots extending from the peripheral edges of the disks inward toward the centers thereof. These disks 12 are rigidly connected .to or made integral with central pins or posts, 14, that are formed lwith shoulders 15, which shoulders pass outward through side plates, 16, that are riveted-to the frame 10.
Against the shoulders 15 of the pins or posts 14 We place washers 17, upon which there are engraved a series of characters, as shown in Fig. 1, and upon the outer faces of the side plates, 16, we engrave or mark another series of characters, 18,which characters are arranged between dividing-lines 19. The washers 17 are held in place by nuts 20, which are threaded to engage with threads formed upon the extending ends ofthe pins or posts 14.
In addition to the recesses 11 of the fraaie 10 said frame is provided with a central vertical slot or opening in which there is iitted the shank 22 of the bow or shackle 50, said shank 22 being fiat, and being provided at its lower end with shoulders 23, which shoulders, when the lock is locked, bear against the pe-` ripheral edges of the disks 12. Above the shank 22 the bow or shackle 50 extends at right angles thereto, as shown at 21, and from the end of this extending section 21 the bow proper extends upward, preferably in a curved line, and then downward, as in the case of an ordinary shackle, the end of thecurved seotion ofthe bow being arranged to enter a recess, 26, that is formed "i the frame 10.
In setting the lock the bow or shackle is drawn up to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when in this posit-ion the projections below the shoulders 23 of the shank 22 will enterthe slots 13 of the disks 12, said projections thus holding the disks from turning, so that the washers 17 may, by means of tongs, pinchers, pliers, or other properimplement, be turned to bring any desired mark upon the washers into register with any desired mark upon the side plates of the lock. The' registering characters or marks are then carefully noted in order that the lock may be opened after the bow or shackle has been returned to the position in which it is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5; for, by bringing the marks or characters into register, the slots 13 of the disks 12 will be brought directly above the shoulders 23 of the shank 22,` and thc shackle may be once more drawn up to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus providing for the introduction or the withdrawal of a staple within or from the curved section of the bow or shackle.
Although any number of characters might be engraved upon the washers 17, we find it convenient in practice to provide said washers with fifteen characters; and, although any number of characters might'be engraved upon the plates 16, we prefer to provide said plates with sixteen characters, that are separated by graduating lines or marks, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Vith such alock as the one above described it will be almost impossible for an intruder to open the lock unless the combination of both washers and plates is known to him.
Having thus fully described ourinvention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-w Y In a permutationvpadlock, the combination, with a main frame formed with recesses 1L and a central longitudinal slot, of disks 12, which iit within the recesses l1, said disks being formed with slots 13, pins or studs 14., extending outward from the disks and formed with shoulders 15, charaelerbeari n g plates 1G,
that are connected to the frame and through which pins or studs extend, character-bearing washers 17, nuts 20, which hold the washers against the shoulders 15, and abow or shackle, 50, formed with a shank, 22, at the lower end ot' which there are shoulders 23, said shank being itted within the central slot of the main frame of the loek, while the end 0f the curved section of the bow is arranged to entera recess formed in the main frame, substantially as described.
