SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,229, dated December 20, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, J0HN TILToN, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Safety Attachments for Railway-Car Stoves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to a safety attachment for railway-car stoves; and it consists in the improved safety attachment hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing, the figure illustrates an exteriorviewof a stove, showing the annular water-tank, supply-pipes, Ste.

A is a stove, which may be Amade of any suitable pattern such as are employed in railway-cars. This stove is provided with a removable top, B, which has angular hooks or arms b, that operate similar to a bayonet-j oint, so that when the cover has been placed on the stove, by turning it a short distance it will be locked, so that it cannot fall off if the stove is overturned. The door C is provided with a similar locking device, a,which will prevent the door being opened-until these devices areV disengaged; and the ash-pit doors may be' provided with the same device. j

E is an annular water-tank, which may be supported upon the stove, and surrounds the lower part of the stove. From the top of the tankpipes F extend upward to a` point above the line of the door C, and are bent inwardly, their inner ends just opening through the sides of the stove, as shown, there being a number of these pipes at intervals all around the stove. The inner ends or mouths of these pipes that enter the interior of the stove may be provided with spray-nozzles, 'as shown at G. Tn order to supply these tanks with water they may either be provided with an opening or pipe, c, through which, by the aid ofthe funnel, water can be poured into the tank' E, or a permanent tank, H, may be placed in the upper part of thecar and filled by means of hose from the outside. From this tank a pipe, I,descends and connects with the annular tank E on the body of the stove by a flexible removable section, I.

mitted from time to time, so as"to keep the stoveitank full. As long as the cars remain in their proper position upon the rails this tank will not come into operation; but if by any reason the cars should be upset, as in case of an accident, the upsetting of the stove would cause the water to run through the connecting-pipes F, and, being discharged through the spray-nozzles into the stove,would put out the re immediately.

The manner of securing the doors and the removable top prevents these from flying open and allowing any hot coals to escape from the stove, thus making a perfectly safe attachment without in any way interfering with the ordinary uses of the stove.

In the ligure I have shown the stove-tank in the form of annular pipes surrounding the stove and connected together at intervals by short pipes.

The pipes F, which lead upward and into the stove, have stop-cocks with handles, as at J, and these are connected with levers L, the lower ends of which are fnlcrumed to the bottom of the stove, while the upper ends are heavy enough to fall outward and open the cocks when the stove is upset.

Havingl thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A car-stove having an annular water-tank surrounding its lower part, a water-supply tank, a pipe leading therefrom to the annular tank, and pipes extending from the latter tank to the upperinterior portion of the car, in combination with the levers fulcrumed about the lower part of the stove, and controlling cocks or valves in the annular tank connected with said levers and automatically opened by them when the stove is upset, substantially as herein described.
