In this case, only two relatively narrow shoulders or annuli exist to accept the forces involved during use of the shuttle, and these are still further heavily stressed by the initial forces exerted by the head of the bolt and its nut. As a result, the shoulders or annuli referred to collapse, causing first and foremost weft thread breakages and damage to the warp threads, and, in the end, damage to the bolt itself. By continuous checking of the shuttle and the re-tightening of the bolt, these results may be delayed but not prevented.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of the invention is to overcome the problem just described, and is achieved by providing means for securing the head of a spring clamp for the bobbin or cop in an automatic shuttle of the type described in which the surfaces which receive the operative forces are of substantial area and in which the operative forces are directed to parts of the assembly having substantial thickness. It is a further object of the invention to provide a certain resiliency in the securing means and to ensure that the bolt is under compressive stress.
These objects are achieved, according to the present invention, in that a substantially cylindrical resilient member is provided on the portion of the bolt lying to one side of the head of the clamp, which rests against the nut or head of the bolt and which, when the bolt is tightened, is pressed against the walls of the bore in the shuttle and holds the head of the clamp in such a manner that it does not touch the bolt.
An improvement of this principle consists in that a second substantially cylindrical resilient member is disposed on the side of the head of the clamp opposite the first member, and lying against the head of the bolt or against the nut, as the case may be, which when the bolt is tightened, is pressed against the walls of the bore in the shuttle and holds the head of the clamp in such a manner that it does not touch the bolt. Such an embodiment has the advantages inherent in the first embodiment to a greater degree. It is an advantage to select the dimension of the parts so that only one through bore is necessary in the body of the shuttle and, besides this, the action is increased in that, for example, convex-concave, concave-convex or male and female clamps are provided on the resilient body and the clamp respectively. A satisfactory centering action is achieved by means of a frusto-conical face on the resilient body, an intermediate frusto-conical annulus, and a frusto-conical depression in the clamp In a specific modification, the inner face of each resilient member has an outer annular surface and an inner concave surface and the head of the clamp is designed to be convex, complementary to the annular surface on the resilient members.
In a further modification, a convex face is provided on the inner face of each resilient member, while the clamp has complementary concave surfaces.

FIG. 3 is a detailed sectional view showing to an enlarged scale the securing means of the shuttle illustrated in FIG. 1;
FIGS. 4 to 6 are views similar to FIG. 3 showing three further embodiments of the invention; and
FIGS. 7 and 8 are views similar to FIG. 2, showing two still further embodiments of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring first to theembodiments shown in FIGS. 1 to 6, a transverse bore 2 running through the nose of a shuttle I accommodates two cylindrical members 3, of resilient material each of which, as shown in FIG. 2 and FIG. 3, abuts a frusto-conical annulus 4 which, in turn, abuts a frusto-conical surface 5 at one end of a bore 6 through the head of a clamp 7. A bolt 8, whose diameter is less than the bore 6 of the clamp 7, passes through the bore 6 and extends on both sides of the parts 3, 4, 7, the head 9 and the nut 10 of the bolt being tightened down against the outer faces 11 of the cylindrical members 3. The nut 10 is secured in suitable manner against turning in the bore 2.
In FIG. 4, cylindrical members 103 are provided with annular faces 12 and concave clamping faces 13, whereas convex formations 14 are provided on the clamp 107.
In FIG. 5, cylindrical members 203 are provided with convex clamping faces 15 and the clamp 207 has complementay concave faces 16.
In FIG. 6, cylindrical members 303 are provided with a chamfer l7 and the clamp 307 is complementarily shaped.
In all the embodiments, a rigid or perhaps somewhat resilient spacer 18, 118, 218, 318 is arranged between the two legs of the clamp for the pirn or cop through which the screw 8 passes.
In FIGS. 7 and 8, embodiments are shown wherein instead of a pair of resilient members, one at each side of the clamp, only one such member 3a is provided at one side of the head of the clamp. In both these embodiments, a frusto-conical intermediate annulus 4a is disposed between the resilient body 3a and the head of the clamp 7. In FIG. 7, the screw head 9 abuts the shoulder of a counterbored portion 2a of the bore 2 while in FIG. 8 the nut 10 rests on such a counterbored portion.
I claim:
l. A shuttle for a loom comprising in combination:
a shuttle body;
a bobbin-retaining clamp having a pair of opposed jaws at one end for supporting a bobbin and forming a neck portion at the other end;
means for securing said other end of said clamp in the nose end of said shuttle body including a through bore in said nose end of said shuttle body, a bolt having a head on one end and a nut on its other end, a bolt-receiving aperture in said neck portion of said clamp, and at ieast one generally cylindrical resilient member which is both axially and radially deformable; said resilient member having a central bore for receiving said bolt which bolt also passes through said aperture in said clamp and through said bore in said shuttle body to thereby compress said resilient member axially against one side of said clamp as said nut is threaded onto said bolt, said resilient member being radially distended against the wall of said shuttle body through bore in response to the compression of said resilient member when said nut is threaded onto said bolt, the end of said resilient member which is adjacent said clamp having a contoured surface, and means including at least in part said contoured surface for radially centering said bolt relative to the aperture in said clamp to thereby securely hold said clamp in said shuttle body free of said bolt. 2. The combination of claim which further inciudes a second substantially cylindrical resilient member like said first resilient member, said second member being supported by said bolt and disposed thereon on the side of said clamp opposite said first resilient member so that when said bolt is tightened both said resilient members are pressed against the wall of said bore in the nose of the shuttle and together hold the said clamp clear of said bolt.
3. The combination of claim 2 in which the one said resilient member abuts the head of said bolt and the other said resilient member abuts the nut for said bolt.
4. The combination of claim 1 which further includes a frusto-conical intermediate annulus disposed between said resilient member and said-clamp.
5. The combination of claim 4 in which said aperture in said clamp and said contoured surface of said resilient member each have frusto-conical surfaces complementary to the surfaces of said intermediate annulus.
6. The combination of claim 1 in which said contoured surface of said resilient member has a concave surface which is adapted to engage a complementary convex surface on said clamp.
7. The combination of claim 1 in which said contoured surface of said resilient member has a convex surface which is adapted to engage a complementary concave surface on said clamp. 8. The combination of claim 1 in which said resilient member is chamfered and engages a complementarily shaped portion on the head of the clamp.

Claims (8)

1. A shuttle for a loom comprising in combination: a shuttle body; a bobbin-retaining clamp having a pair of opposed jaws at one end for supporting a bobbin and forming a neck portion at the other end; means for securing said other end of said clamp in the nose end of said shuttle body including a through bore in said nose end of said shuttle body, a bolt having a head on one end and a nut on its other end, a bolt-receiving aperture in said neck portion of said clamp, and at least one generally cylindrical resilient member which is both axially and radially deformable; said resilient member having a central bore for receiving said bolt which bolt also passes through said aperture in said clamp and through said bore in said shuttle body to thereby compress said resilient member axially against one side of said clamp as said nut is threaded onto said bolt, said resilient member being radially distended against the wall of said shuttle body through bore in response to the compression of said resilient member when said nut is threaded onto said bolt, the end of said resilient member which is adjacent said clamp having a contoured surface, and means including at least iN part said contoured surface for radially centering said bolt relative to the aperture in said clamp to thereby securely hold said clamp in said shuttle body free of said bolt.
2. The combination of claim 10 which further includes a second substantially cylindrical resilient member like said first resilient member, said second member being supported by said bolt and disposed thereon on the side of said clamp opposite said first resilient member so that when said bolt is tightened both said resilient members are pressed against the wall of said bore in the nose of the shuttle and together hold the said clamp clear of said bolt.
3. The combination of claim 2 in which the one said resilient member abuts the head of said bolt and the other said resilient member abuts the nut for said bolt.
4. The combination of claim 1 which further includes a frusto-conical intermediate annulus disposed between said resilient member and said clamp.
5. The combination of claim 4 in which said aperture in said clamp and said contoured surface of said resilient member each have frusto-conical surfaces complementary to the surfaces of said intermediate annulus.
6. The combination of claim 1 in which said contoured surface of said resilient member has a concave surface which is adapted to engage a complementary convex surface on said clamp.
7. The combination of claim 1 in which said contoured surface of said resilient member has a convex surface which is adapted to engage a complementary concave surface on said clamp.
8. The combination of claim 1 in which said resilient member is chamfered and engages a complementarily shaped portion on the head of the clamp.
