UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ALEXANDER REID, OF NAPANEE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
FETLOCK-SUPPORT FOR COLTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,996, dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed July 14, 1887. Serial No. 244,269. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ALEXANDER REID, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the town of Napanee, in the county of LennoX and Addington and Province of Ontario, have invented a new and useful Fetlock-Support for Young Colts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a fetlock-support for young colts when they have a weakness or contraction of either the flexor or extensor muscles and tendons of either the fore or hind legs-that is to say, when the colt stands on one or both the fetlock-joints of the fore legs, the foot or feet turned posterior, and when the colt stands on the hind fetlock-joints, the foot turned up anterior.
The object of the support is to support and hold in the right shape the leg ofa colt until it may become strong enough to do without such aid. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a Support. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a leather bandage, cut of such a shape that when laced up the back D it will fit closely to the leg of the colt on which it is to be used. It has a leather sole the shape of the bottom of the hoof. Up the front of this bandage A a strip'ot' leather, B, is sewed, forming a longitudinal pocket, so that a stiffening-splint, O, of wood or metal, may be shoved in and held in place between B and A, and by that means support and hold in shape the leg of the colt. This weakness in the legs of young colts is of very common occurrence, and has generally heretofore resulted in the colts uselessness and death. Sometimes, however, they have been saved by the use of common splints and bandages; but itthen takes from three weeks upward to cure the colt, while with the above support from three to ten days generally suffices; also, when the colt has a side weakness of the leg, by making the cover B wide and the splint 0 wide and concavo-convex, so as to fit the leg, the leg may be supported sidewise, as well.
I make no claim to the use of leather as a bandage or to the use of splints; but
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the fetlock-protection herein described, consisting of a leather bandage, shaped substantially as shown and having a longitudinal pocket adapted to receive asupport-ingsplint, all substantially as described.
JOHN ALEXANDER REID.
