COLLET OR. SHELL DI`E FOR BUTTON-MAKlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,741, dated December 13, 1887.
Appucnon nica A, rn 11, i897.
To ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HoRNIoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collet or Shell Dies for Button-Making, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to Y make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to reduce the labor aud expense of manufacturiugthat class of buttons used particularly for mens pants, having sheet-metal shells or back plates, in which the name of the manufacturer, or the trade-mark, or other lettering or inscriptions are impressed. Heretofore in dies for striking out the said shells or sheet-metal backs prior to securing them in the button one die provided means for striking out and forming the shells, and another independent die provided means for impressing the wording or inscriptions above referred to, two independent processes being thus required and a consequent loss of time and labor. In the improvement means are provided for striking out the blank, centrally perforating and turning the outer edges of the same, audwith the same stroke of the device impressing the lettering intol the face of the sheet metal.
Theiuveution consists in the improved die, and in the combination and arrangements of parts thereof, substantially as will be `hereinafter set forth, and finally be embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like lettersindicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l, Sheet l, is a front elevation of au ordinary frame or bed carrying the improved die-sections. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view, of a portion ofa diesection in detail. Fig. 5 is au enlarged side elevation of the cooperating sections in detail, and Fig. 9 is a reduced sectional view of the same, taken through line y. Figs. 6, 7, and
Serial B11234825. (No model.)
8 are detail views of certain parts, which will be duly explained.
` In said drawings, a is a frame or bed, and b a plunger having a vertical reciprocating movement in ways c c therein, under the iniiuence of a'suitable driving wheel, cZ, and eccentric e, in any ordinary manner. Upon said plunger or its equivalentis secured, by screwing'or other mode of attachment, the upper or male-de section, f, and to the lower portion of the'frame or upon the table or bed there- `under is secured the lower or female-die seclion, g. Ofsaid male section, h is a hol-low head provided with a threaded shank, h', by means of which it is secured to the plunger, and having secured or joined therein a perforator, Z, which extends centrally through the chamber h2 therein aud through a chamber, j, Fig. 4, of a blank-cutter head, h3, and at its lower extremity lies about flush with the lower end of the said blank-cutter head.
The blank-cutter head h (shown in detail in Figs. 2, 3, and 4) is secured to the head h by means of the set-screw m, or other suitable device, and at its lower and outer edge, as at Z, is provided with a cutter, which on the descent of the plunger first engages the co-operating edge Zl of the female-die section, cutting the blank, and then entering said female section, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 9,
The lower end of the head h3 is countersunk after the manner illustrated in Fig. 4' at Z2, forming the cutterZ, above referred to, and also an impression-surface, Z3, in which the letters to be transferred or reproduced in or on the face of the sheet-metal shell are found.l
The perforator i, extending through the chamber or opeuingj, is enveloped by a stripper77 or sleeve, n, which moves longitudinally on the perforator, so that when the shell-blank is struck out, its edge turned, the center perforated, and the face impressed, and the male die moves away from the female, carrying the shell with it, the said shell may be forced from the male die by means of the said stripper, be-
ing forced downward against the upper side ring, o', and extend through slots pin the.
ICO
form the shell, a head, t, projecting upwardly.
through said chamber, the upper edge of which is provided with sunken letters to co-operate with the raised letters on the head h of the male die and form theinscription in the shell, anda central aperture, u, in said head t to receive and co-operate with the perforator in strikingout the center of the shell to form the perforation therein. As the male die descends, the end of the stripper rests on the head t, and is allowed to stand stationary therein while the die continues its descent. When the male die again ascends from the female, it carries the finished shell with it, which is then re moved by forcing the stripper downward with the hand.
I am aware that changes may be made -such,
for example, as transposing the parts from the male to the female, and vice versa-without effecting the scope ofthe invention; and I do not wish to be limited to any exact arrangement shown or positively described.
What I claim as new is- 1. In combination, in a machine for making collets or shells for buttons, a die section comprising a perforator, z', a stripper, and a head, h3, having a cutting-edge, Z, and impressionsurface Z, and a co-operating die-section having a cutter, Z', and apertured head t, with an impression-surface to co-operate with that of the first said die-section, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination, in a machine for making collets or shells for buttons, a die-section comprising a hollow head, h, a perforator, i, and a sleeve, n, around said perforator for stripping the shell from the die, finger-pieces for opere ating said stripper, a head, h, secured upon said head h, and having a countersunk extremity forming a cutter, Z, and a lettered impression-surface, and a cooperating die-section havingA an apertured head, l, with a chamber,
s, therearound, and a cutter, l', substantiallyl as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of WILLIAM HORNICH. Witnesses:
CHARLES H. PELL,
OSCAR A. MICHEL.
