WKTNESSES T. e. LOVEGROVE. WATERGAGB.
Patented Dec. 13, 1887.
NITED 7 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS G. LOVEGROVE, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA.
WATER-GAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374 605, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed March 17, 1887. Serial No. 231,256. (No model.) A
To all whom, it may concern.- a
Be it known that LTrroMAs G. LOVEGROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Water Column and Gage, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of awater-gage embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section in linear m, Fig. 9 Figs. 4 and 5 represent sections of detached portions on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a water column and gage having means for indicating the condition ofwaterin asteam-boiler and sounding an alarm in the event of the water becom ing high or low.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body or shell of a water -column, the same having pipes B and 0 connected with a steamboiler for the admission of steam and water into said body.
.Within the body A is a float, D, which is formed of glass or other suitable material and connected with a rock-shaft, E, the latter being journaled in the walls of the body A. and passing outside of the same, and having connected with one end thereof the index F,which appears on the side of the body A for indicating the position of the water in the boiler, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Connected with the index F is a toggle-lever, G, which is also attached to a three-way cock, H, at the top of the body A, the shell Jof said cock having connected with it at opposite sides the pipes K L, and at the top the pipe M, said pipes K L being secured to and communicating with the body A at the top thereof, so as to admit the steam to said shell J, and consequently to the cock H. PipeM has connected with it a whistle or alarm, N.
It will be seen that when the water in the boiler is at the proper height the float D causes the index F to stand horizontal or about horizontal, as seen in Fig. 1; but any other posiindicate said proper height of the water. The cock H now occupies the position shown in Fig. 4, whereby steam is prevented from encock H is rotated, so that the port or bore of the cock is in communication with the pipes K M. Steam now enters the pipe K and passes through the cock into the pipe M, and so blows the whistle N. Should the-supply of water be above the proper height, the float rises and rotates the cock H in such manner as to place its port or bore in communication with the pipes L M, whereby the whistle is blown and attention thus directed to the condition of the water. Then the proper level of the water is restored, the float again places the index F in the position indicating the same, and the cock H is rotated, so as to cut off the supply of steam thereto at the pipes K L, whereby the alarm ceases.
An ordinary whistle maybe attached to the top of the body A, and its lever connected by a chain with the index or finger F, so that said whistle may be blown in the event of low water in the boiler.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
J. A water-column having a float with an index, the shell J, connected to the column A thereof, separate pipes leading from the said column A into the sides of the said shell and provided with an alarm, and a cock in said shell. controlling the communication between thesaid alarm-containing pipe and the separate pipes, substantially as described.
2. Awater column having a float with a rock-shaft, an index secured to said rock-shaft, the three-way cock operating in the shell J, pipes L and K, connecting the shell Jwith the column A, the toggle-lever G, connecting the index with the said cock, and the pipe M, having the steam-whistle N, all substantially as described.
THOS. G. LOVEGROVE.
