2 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures DISPLAY CANDLE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention pertains to a novelty candle device having utility in the display of advertising or other messages and indicia.
2. Statement of the Prior Art Various candle devices adapted to expose indicia of sorts have been heretofore proposed, examples being those shown in the following prior US. patents:
Patent No. Patentee Issue Date 1,660,760 Murphy Feb. 28, 1928 2,001,312 OConnell May 14, 1935 3,077,981 Gaspard Feb. 19, 1963 3,286,492 Frazier Nov. 22, 1966.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is directed to the provision of a candle display useful in conveying a continuing advertising message, greeting or other indicia to a user. Unlike prior art devices of this general character, the arrangement is such that the message is displayed about the candle flame which serves to illuminate the same and to draw attention thereto. Further, by reason of the suspension of the message on an embedded emblem, the unit remains in display position as the candle wax and wick are expended thereby repetitively displaying the same.
Additional features and advantages of the invention will occur to those in the art from a consideration of the following specification when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. I is a plan view of a display candle hereof, the candle wax being in solidified form;
FIG. 2 is a vertical cross section taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 3 is a view like FIG. 1, except that the device is here activated by lighting of the wick;
FIG. 4 is another vertical cross section here taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
FIG. 5 is a perspective view showing the display emblem per se.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawing in more detail, a display candle assembly pursuant to this invention is therein generally identified by reference numeral 10. The candle includes a receptacle 12 of optional design, but preferably of a type having later utility such as for refilling as a candle, as a drinking cup, or the like. In any event, the receptacle has a base 14, and a side wall 16. The wall 16 terminates at the top rim l8 defining an open top 20.
The receptacle 12 is supplied with a quantity of candle wax 22 filled therein to a depth 24 below the rim 18. The wax is formed in the receptacle with a central depression 26 from contraction on cooling, the wax being placed in the receptacle in a heated condition. The wax, consistent with known characteristics of most standard candle waxes, has the property of being sub stantially opaque when cold and solidified, and substantial transparency when melted.
A wick 28 extends vertically through the wax from the base 14 of the receptacle, having an exposed end 30. The wick is centrally located in the wax.
Embedded in the wax immediately below the upper surface thereof is a display emblem 32. The emblem comprises an annular disc having an upper surface 34 and lower surface 36, and further having a central opening 38 formed therein. The wick 28 extends through the opening, whereby the candle flame, shown in FIG. 3, is located centrally above the disc.
An advertising message 40 or other display is provided on the upper surface 34 of the disc. Lighting of the wick results in melting of the candle wax 22 in area area 42 of an extent such that the wax above the disc is melted. This results in exposure and illumination of the display emblem. As the wick and surrounding wax are expended, the emblem settles in relation to lowering of the wax level, whereby it continues to function as aforesaid throughout the useful life of the candle.
I claim:
1. A candle display assembly comprising:
a receptacle having an open top and a base;
a quantity of candle wax in said receptacle extending from the base to a depth below that of the open top, the candle wax having the property of being substantially opaque when solidified and being liquified upon the imposition of heat and being substantially transparent when liquified, the quantity of wax in the receptacle having a top surface;
an elongated wick vertically disposed in the receptacle and having an exposed end projecting from the can-dle wax, the wick being vertically embedded in the wax;
a display emblem, comprising an annular disc having an upper side and a lower side entirely embedded in said candle wax adjacent to the top surface of the wax, the disc being oriented such that its upper side is substantially horizontal and parallel to the top surface of the wax, the upper side having indicia thereon which is visible through the wax when the wax is subjected to heat and liquified by lighting of the exposed end of the wick; the display emblem being of a material that will remain sub merged in molten wax; and
the display emblem having an opening therein, the
wick extending through said opening.
2. The invention of claim 1, wherein:
the opening in said display emblem is located at substantially the center thereof.
Claims (2)
1. A candle display assembly comprising: a receptacle having an open top and a base; a quantity of candle wax in said receptacle extending from the base to a depth below that of the open top, the candle wax having the property of being substantially opaque when solidified and being liquified upon the imposition of heat and being substantially transparent when liquified, the quantity of wax in the receptacle having a top surface; an elongated wick vertically disposed in the receptacle and having an exposed end projecting from the candle wax, the wick being vertically embedded in the wax; a display emblem, comprising an annular disc having an upper side and a lower side entirely embedded in said candle wax adjacent to the top surface of the wax, the disc being oriented such that its upper side is substantially horizontal and parallel to the top surface of the wax, the upper side having indicia thereon which is visible through the wax when the wax is subjected to heat and liquified by lighting of the exposed end of the wick; the display emblem being of a material that will remain submerged in molten wax; and the display emblem having an opening therein, the wick extending through said opening.
2. The invention of claim 1, wherein: the opening in said display emblem is located at substantially the center thereof.
