HAIR TONIC.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,489. dated December 6, 1887.

Application filed April 13, 1887. Serial No. 234,607. (No specimens.)

.T0 at whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN SAMUEL MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oorvallis, in the county of Benton and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Oompound for Invigorating the Hair and Cleaning the Head or Scalp, of which the following is a specification.

The compound or composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in or about the proportions stated, viz: decoction of tea,

ninety-six fluid ounces; common salt, one.

and one-half ounce; borax, one and onehalf ounce; aqua-ammonia, onefourth dram; glycerine, twenty-onefiuid ounces; bay'rum, eight fluid ounces; tincture of cantharides, threefourths ounce; musk, one-half ounce; the whole to be perfumed with attar or oil of roses, one-eighth dram.

To prepare this compound I first take tea, preferably gunpowder tea, in the proportion of five and one-third ounces, and boil the same for about five minutes in one and one-fourth gallon of water and allow the same to stand two hours, more or less. I then draw off ninety-six fluid ounces of this decoction and filter the same. I next add the salt and borax in or about the proportions above named and stir the same until dissolved, then add the aqua-ammonia and filter the mass, which, after cooling, is filtered again. The glycerine is next added, then, in succession, the bay-rum, the tincture of cantharides, and the musk, after which the attar or oil of roses or other perfume, as desired. This procedure, as well as the proportions of ingredients, may be more or less varied without changing the character of the mixture or compound.

The effect of the glycerine in this mixture is to soften, the bayrum to cleanse, the tinct are of cantharides to stimulate the scalp, the musk to stre'ngthen the roots of the hair, and the ottar of roses to perfume the whole.

The mixture is to be applied to the hair and scalp of the head as other hair-iuvigorators are used. In its effects it restrains or prevents the hair from falling out and removes dandruff from the scalp, also operates as a cure for itching-or burning of the scalp. 1f the hair is dry and wiry, it will soften it, also restore it to its natural color, if not gray, and will have the effect of making lighthair much darker.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

The herein-described compound or composition of matter to be used for invigorating the hair and cleaning the scalp, consisting of a solution or decoction of tea'in water, salt, borax, aqua-ammonia, glycerine, bay-rum, tincture of cantharides, and musk, in or about the proportions specified, the whole to be perfumed as desired.
