EXERCISING DEVICE FOR THE LIP AND CHEEK AREA This application is a continuation-in-part of abandoned application Ser. No. 65,818, filed Aug. 2l 1970, entitled Exercising Device for the Lip and Cheek Area.
THE INVENTION This invention relates to facial exercising and more particularly to an exercising device adapted to exercise the lip and cheek areas.
In the modern world, physical fitness has become an important national problem. Many people find themselves in occupations that allow for little or no active movement and thus ultimately are faced with the problem of a planned exercise program in order to enjoy physical fitness. Some exercise programs are set up to provide aids to appearance, particularly those involving the face. It is in this category that the device of this invention resides.
It is an object of this invention to provide a device for exercising the lip and cheek areas.
It is another object of this invention to provide an exercising device having a flange portion adapted to fit within the mouth between the teeth and the inner face of the lips.
It is yet another object to provide an exercising device for the lip and cheek area adapted to be introduced into the mouth between the users teeth and the inner lip area immediately adjacent the mouth comprising a handle and a U-shaped flange connected thereto wherein the flange fits between the teeth and the inner face of the lips so that inward and outward movement of the handle will exercise the lip and cheek area.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The above and other objects will become more apparent when taken in conjunction with the following detailed description of the drawing, showing by way of example, two embodiments of the invention.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the exerciser,
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the device of FIG FIG. 3 is an end elevational view of the device of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 4 is an end elevational view of the device of FIG. 1 with a modification to the U-shaped flange.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to the various figures of the drawing, the lip and cheek exerciser of this invention comprises a handle 12 connected to a U-shaped flange 14 at a point midway of the closed portion of the U configuration. The size of the U-shaped flange may vary substantially so as to be configured to persons having mouths of differcnt sizes. The U-shape is generally devised to conform to the outline formed by the users teeth from the front rearward on both sides.
It is intended that the U-shaped flange 14 should fit into the space between the teeth and the inner face of the lip areas immediately surrounding the mouth. The length of each leg 16 and 18 from the midpoint 20 of the closed end of the U" is generally less than the disv tance from the front teeth to the last molar in the rear of the mouth on both sides.
The width 22 of the flange is generally coextensive with the distance between the gum lines of the upper and lower jaws when the mouth is closed and the teeth are in confronting engagement. The thickness 24 of the flange legs 16 and 18 may vary substantially but in no event should it be greater than the distance between the teeth and the innerface of the lip area.
The handle 12 is connected to the U-shaped flange 14 at its midpoint 20 and sized so that its dimension 26 is always less than the corresponding height 22 of the flange leg 16. The length of the handle is a matter of choice. Even so it should be s'ufficiently long so as to provide an adequate and comfortable hand grip. The handle 12 may be curved and somewhat enlarged toward its free end 30 to assist in gripping of same.
In use, the flange 14 is introduced into the mouth and fitted in the space formed by the teeth and the inner face of the lip area immediately adjacent the mouth with the handle projecting outwardly from the mouth. After this, the mouth is closed so that the lips fit over the flange 14 whereupon the handle 12 is gripped and a back and forth motion applied thereto. This back and forth motion is generally directed toward and then away from the face. Such motion produces a stretching of the lipand cheek areas to accomplish the desired exercise.
As best shown in FIG. 3, the upper and lower surfaces 32 and 34, respectively, of the flange 14 are generally parallel so that no uneveness will be experienced in the reciprocating action. I
In the modified embodiment illustrated in FIG. 4, the only change from the structure shown in FIGS. l-3 is the shape of the U-shaped flange 14 wherein there is cut out a rounded V-shaped portion 42 in the central section of the flange 14. This cut-out 42 extends downwardly from the upper surface 32 in general alignment with the handle 12 and is of a depth less than the dis- 4 tance to the handle. This cut-out is useful in preventing the irritation of that body of flesh which connects the inner face of the upper lip to the adjacent gum area.
It is obvious that this device could be advantageously made up in a unitary plastic arrangement which would be easy to use and readily kept clean. Although the plastic material could be slightly resilient, it should be strong enough to assure that the desired reciprocating motion of the flange 14 is readily achieved.
I claim:
1. An exercising device for the lip and cheek area of a persons face adapted to be placed in the mouth of the user and fitted between the teeth and lip area immediately adjacent the mouth, said device comprising a rigid handle, and a generally U-shaped rigid flange connected to the handle and configured to fit in the mouth area defined by the user's teeth and lip areas immediately adjacent the mouth whereby the flange may be reciprocated by back and forth movement of the handle to exercise the lip and cheek areas.
2. The invention asdescribed in claim 1 and wherein the legs of the U-shaped flange have a length not greater than the distance from the front teeth to the last tooth on both sides of the mouth.
3. The invention as described in claim 2 and wherein the width of the U-shaped flange is not greater than the distance between the gum lines of the upper and lower jaws and the thickness is less than the space between the users teeth and adjacent lip areas.
4. The invention as described in claim 3 and wherein a rounded V-shaped cut-out is provided in the central portion of the U-shaped flange.
5. A unitary rigid exercising device for the lip and cheek area of a persons face adapted to be introduced into the mouth and fitted in the space defined by the users teeth and lip area immediately adjacent the mouth, said device comprising a rigid handle, and a generally U-shaped rigid flange configured to fit into the mouth in the space between the users teeth and lip area immediately adjacent the mouth area and secured to the handle at the midpoint of the closed portion of the U, the length of the legs of the U-shaped flange being less than the distance that the teeth extend toward the rear of the mouth from the front, the width of the flange being coextensive with the distance between the gum line of the upper and lower jaws when the mouth is closed and the teeth in the upper and lower jaw engage each other, and the thickness of the flange being such that it will readily fit in the space between the teeth and inner portion of the lip area immediately adjacent the mouth whereby the flange may be reciprocated by back and forth movement of the handle to exercise the lip and cheek areas.
6. The invention as set forth in claim 5 and wherein the U-shaped flange is provided with Y a rounded V- shaped cut-out in its central portion which would be adjacent the upper inner lip of the user.
