Wvbnes s e s n PETERS Pholuuthogmphur, Washingiull. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM I. WINNE, OF ALBANY, NEWV YORK.
PAGE-FASTENER FOR BOOKS.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,386, dated December 6, 1887.
Application filed February 16, 1887. Serial No. 227,977. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM I. WIN E, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Page-Fasteners for Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention embraces two adjustable me tallic hooks placed on the cover of a book, at the opposite edges thereof, and a cord or band which is secured permanently in one hook, and which passes over the leaves of the book and is temporarily fastened in the other hook.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a perspective View of such hook. Fig. 2 is a perspective view. of another manner of constructing such hook. Fig. 3 is a side View of a cover of a book with the hooks attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a viewof a book having the hooks on the covers thereof, and showing the manner in which the leaves are held by the cord or band attached to said hooks.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a hook; B, the lip of the hook; G, the body of the hook; D, the cord or band; E, the cover of a book; F, a page of said book.
The hook A is constructed of metal, usually wire. .VVhen made of wire, as shown in Figs- 1, 8, and 4, I bend the wire so that one portion thereof forms a clasp to grasp the edges of the cover of a book, the other portion of the hook being bent in the form of a U, to receive and hold a cord or band placed therein, as hereinafter more fully described.
I prefer to make the hook and attachingpiece of wire, because the wire is easily bent, and is lighter, cheaper, more easily constructed, does not mar the cover of the book, and can be made more readily to conform to the thickness of such cover of a book. I do not, however, confine myself to wire in making such hook.
The wire hook, or a U shaped piece of sheet metal, may be attached to another U-sl1aped piece of metal, the openings of the Us being one perpendicular to the other.
I sometimes construct the hook from one piece of sheet metal, and cut or stamp out therefrom a lip or tongue. I thenbend the sheet metal to a U shape and bend the tongue in a U shape, which shall be perpendicular to the other-bent portion.
In operation a bent wire or one of the U- shaped pieces of metal is placed upon and around each of the opposite edges of one of the covers of a book, (usually the top or bottom edges,) or the bent wire or apiece of metal is placed on the right and left hand edges, respectively, of both of the covers of such book. A cord or band is now permanently tied to or fastened in one of the hooks upon one of the edges of the covers. The cord or bandis then passed over the page of the book which it is desired shall be secured and slipped into the other hook or under the lip thereof, thus securely fastening thepage in place. When one desires to turn the page, the cord or band is disengaged from the hook or from under the lip of the hook and the page is free.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A detachable metallic hook, one portion of which forms a clasp to surround and grasp the edge of a cover of a book, the other portion in the shape of a U, to receive and hold a cord placed therein, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a cord and detachable metallic hooks to surround and grasp the edges of a cover of a book and to receive and temporarily hold said cord placed therein, for
