COlN-OPERATED APPARATUS FOR DELIVERING A SPRAY OF PERFUME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,347, dated December 6, 1887.

Be it known that I, EDWARD GARDNER OOLTON, of 11 Neeld Terrace, Hendon, in the county of Middlesex, England, consulting engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means or Apparatus for Delivering 2. Shower or Spray of Perfume or Liquid in Exchange for a Coin or Equivalent, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 16,265, dated December 11, 1886, and have made applications for Letters Patent in France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Italy,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object the construction of an apparatus which on placing a coin or equivalent therein shall enable mechanism to be released, thereby delivering a shower or spray of perfume or liquid.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, Figure 1 shows a vertical elevation of my apparatus with the front of the box or case removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on part of the coin-slide. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the box, showing one side of the plate or support carrying the working parts. Fig. A 1s a vertical section through the box, show- 1ng the opposite side of the aforesaid plate or support.

A is a horizontallysliding bolt having a knob, 13, for pulling out the same, which passes through a socket, O, in the box. I could arrange the said bolt to be pushed inwardly to operate the spray-producing mechanism, as hereinafter described; but I prefer, for the sake of c0nvenience,to use a bolt which is pulled out. A slot is formed in the bolt A, (see Fig. 4,) which slot in its forward and retrograde motion is guided on a pin, E, fixed to the plate or support F. The said bolt A is notched or serrated, as at G, three teeth being shown, Fig. 4.

Onthe pin E, I pivot a coin scale or tray, H, having astem, I, carryingacounter-weight, J, adjustable on the said stem, so as to alter the balance for coins of various weights.

, K is an abutment on the box for the end of the said stem to abut on when the said coin scale or tray His in the normal position. The said coin scale or tray H carries a pin, L,

which is adapted to lock directly into one of the notches or serrations on the bolt A. When the coin scale or tray is cverbalanced bya coin falling thereon, as hereinafter de' into the same, and carrying a disk or pusher,

I, for pressing against the air-bag Q, connected by pipe R to the spray-producer S, placed in the perfume-bottle T, resting on a bracket, U, on the plate F. The bracket or arm Ncarries a cranked arm or plate, V, having a cranked slot, W, formed therein, such bracket or arm N reciprocating with the sliding bolt A.

X is a pin traveling in the slot W and carried by a lever, Y, rocking on a pin in a boss, Z, carried on the plate F. The lever Y has jointed to it a link, a, also jointed to a flap or disk, b, pivoted at c to the'plate or support. This flap or disk covers the mouth of the sprayproducer when in the normal position and prevents the introduction of articles or substances likely to damage the same.

On the lid of the box I arrange a nozzle or exit-tube, e,'with its inner end facing the nozzle of the spray-producer, and between which and the said exittube the flap or disk I) rises and falls, so shutting off the orifice of the s prayproducer, as before described. \Vhen the flap or disk b is shut over theend of the nozzle or exittube e, the spray-producer nozzle is protected, and if pieces of wood or the like are introduced into the nozzle or exit-tube e by mischievous persons they merely lodge therein and can be readily removed. As the bolt A is returned by the recoil of the spring 0, which might suddenly rebound on being released, and which on such occurrence is likely to knock up the pin L of the coin chute or tray H, and so release it from the notches G in the bolt A, which would again set the bolt free to be ICO worked and perfume to be again obtained without further payment, I provide means to prevent this by a small shutter, f, hinged in the coin-chute g, made in the form known in England as the skeleton variety-that is to say, made of open-work, so that a coin of lesser size and weight than that required to work the apparatus when placed therein will fall through the open side of the chute, and the machine will not be operated. The shutter f in the said coin-chute, is linked by link it to a rod, t, pivoted on centersj j to the plate or support F. To the said rod t is attached an arm or catch, k.

Pivoted on a bracket, Z, attached to the plate F, is a weighted lever, m, which has a notch, n, in its upper end, into which the arm or catch it can fall, if required. I

0 is a piece of wire bent or-cranked at its upper end, p, which rides against the arm or catch when the sliding bolt A is released by the coin, and so moves forward.

A flange, q, is formed on the coin scale or tray H, and when the apparatus is in the normal position the tooth r on the weighted lever m is underneath this flange q, and therefore the coin scale or tray cannot be tilted until the lever m, moved by the coin pushing the shutter f, rocks back, so withdrawing its tooth 1' from under the flange q on the coin scale or tray. A bent pin, .9, projects at right angles from the said bolt A, so that as the said bolt advances when released by a coin the pin 8 rides on the under side of the depressed coin scale or tray and raises it until its pin L again drops into one of the notchesG in the sliding bolt A, and so locks it again.

I will now proceed to describe the working of my apparatus. A coin of suitable value which will depress the coin scale or tray is put in through the coin-slot. It turns aside the shutterf, which rocks the rod i on the centers, j j. The arm or catch is now moves toward the plate or support F, and in so doing locks into the notch n in the weighted lever m, which moves outward from the coin scale or tray, its tooth r leaving the flange g on the coin-scale. The coin in the act of rolling down the coin-chute g overturns or depresses the coin scale or tray H, and its pin L leaves the notch or serration G in the bolt A, which can now be pulled forward. The disk or pusher P on the pin 0, attached to the bracket N, carried from the bolt A, advances to press against the air-bag Q, of the sprayproducer S. At the same time the bracket or arm N and its cranked arm or plate V advance with the bolt A, causing the pin X to run up the slot WV in the arm or plate V, and by its action to rock the lever Y on the 'pin in boss Z and pull down, by means of the link a, the flap or disk I) from over the nozzle or exit-tube e. As the-bolt A advances, the portion 19 of the bent or cranked wire 0 catches the arm or catch 7c on the pivoted rod i, causing the said rod to turn on its centers 9' j,

and so release the arm or catch '70 from the notch a in the weighted lever on. This now drops ready for its tooth r to engage with the flange g on the coin scale or tray as the boltis released {and is pulled back by the spring 0. The bent pin 8 on the bolt A gradually restores the coin scale or tray to its normal position as it rides on its under surface, due to the advance of the bolt. Directly the bolt is released it flies back, and the pin L on the coin scale or tray I-I drops into one of the notches G in the bolt A, so locking the same, and now it cannot again be moved until the lockinggear is released by the introduction of a fresh coin. The stem I of the coin scale or tray rests on the stop or abutment K, when the said coin scale or tray drops back into the normal position, as shown in Fig. 4.

I have not shown details of the spray-producer, as I can employ those 'in ordinary use for toilet or other purposes. If desired, I

might use stored air and release it in definite quantities by the action of the bolt A.

It will be understood that, though I have specified perfume, medicinal or other sprays may be used in the said apparatus.

It will readily be perceived that I may adapt my apparatus to deliver various kinds of scent, either by fitting several bolts and appliances to one box or casing or otherwise, by causing the bolt to rotate or partially rotate on its axis, and so open mnltiway cocks, admitting the air-pressure to various bottles or receptacles with their spray-producers. It will also be apparent that the locking device connected with the sliding bolt can be used also for other automatic coin-machines-such, for instance,as boxes for delivering cigarettes, cigars, or the like;

I claim- 1. In an apparatus for delivering a shower or spray of liquid in exchange for a coin, the combination of a sliding bolt, a coin-lock engaging with the same, and a spray producer or spreader, substantially as described.

2. In an apparatus for delivering a shower or spray of liquid in exchange for a coin, the combination of a casing or shield, a sliding bolt mounted therein, a coin-lock engaging with the same, operated by the said bolt, a spray producer or spreader, and a nozzle or orifice on the said casing,whereby the shower or spray of liquid is delivered, substantially as described.

3. In an apparatus for delivering a shower or spray of liquid in exchange for a coin, the combination of a casing or shield, a sliding bolt mounted therein, a coin-lock engaging with the same, operated by the said bolt, a spray producer or spreader,a nozzle or orifice on the said casing for delivering the said shower or spray, a reciprocating cranked slotted arm mounted on the said bolt, a spring to restore the same to the normal position, a rocking link carrying a pin engaging in said cranked slotted arm, and a sliding shutter or V for a coin, the combination of a toothed or ser- 7 valve connected to said rocking link and adapted to close and unclose the opening between the said nozzle or orifice and the spray producer or spreader, substantially as described.

4. In an apparatus for automatically delivering a shower or spray of liquid in exchange for a coin, the combination of a toothed or serrated sliding bolt, a balanced coin scale or tray carrying a pin projecting from the same, adapted to lock directly into the teeth or serrations on the said sliding bolt, a slot in the sliding bolt, so that itcan slide to and fro on y the axis of the balanced coin scale-or tray, a stop or abutment on which the end of the lever or arm of the coin scale 'or tray can abut, and a spring which restores the working parts to their normal position, substantially as described.

5. In an apparatus for automatically delivering a shower or spray of liquid in exchange rated sliding bolt, a balanced coin scale or tray carrying a'pin projecting from the same, adapted to lock directly into the teeth or serrations on the said sliding bolt, a slot in the sliding bolt, so that it can slide to and fro on the axis of the balanced coin scale or tray, a

stop or abutment on which the end of the arm or lever of the coin scale or tray can abut, a bent pin adapted'to tilt back the coin scale or tray to restore the same to the normal position, and a spring to pull back the said sliding bolt, substantially as described.

6. In an apparatus for automatically delivering ashower or spray of perfumein exchange for a coin, the combination of a hinged flap or shutter placed in the coinslide, a link or con-i nection operating a partially-rotating bar or rod, a pivoted lever having means for engaging with said pin, and a notch or tooth on its bottom to engage with a flange or projection on the said coin scale or tray, whereby the said coin scale or tray is prevented from retilting on the rebound of the sliding bolt, substantially as described.

7. In an automatic goods-selling apparatus, a coin scale or tray having a pin locking directly into a sliding bolt operating the delivery apparatus, in combination with a device locking said scale or tray at right angles toits engagement with the sliding bolt, such device being released from the scale or tray by the insertion of the coin into the coin-chute, and being again locked to the scale or tray by the reverse motion of the sliding bolt, substantially as described.
