These pumps generally have included a base member with threads which mate with a threaded opening or bung in the barrel top. The pumps included a suction tube, which might be of the telescoping type to provide for different sized barrels, and include lower and upper check valves. One such pump is described in US. Pat. No. 2,371,940. One deflciencey of this type pump is that when it is tightly engaged with the barrel top the delivery spout is in a fixed position, which may or may not be the most desired position relative to the barrel top. Thus, this type pump does not provide for varying the position of the discharge spout relative to the barrel pump, as is desirable in some instances.
An improved pump base assembly which overcomes the above mentioned deficiency is described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,473,479, which describes a pump base and a pump clamp assembly such that the discharge spout of the barrel pump can be turned relative to the barrel top without loosening the connection between the barrel top and the base assembly. While the pump assembly described in the latter-mentioned patent overcomes to some extent the problems of the prior art, nevertheless it is subject to certain deficiencies in that the pump spout is not universally positionable, and in addition it involves a large number of parts and extensive metal working for its manufacture.
There has existed a need for a pump'base assembly which allows for universal positioning of a pump outlet relative to a barrel top which is inexpensive, effective, and easily utilized by the pump operator.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to a pump base assembly for connecting a pump to a fluid container, and more particularly to a pump base assembly adapted to readibly connect with an opening in a barrel, and to receive a pump cylinder therein. The invention is particularly useful for use with hand operated pumps of the type commonly called barrel pumps.
According to this invention, a pump base assembly is provided with a threaded section for engagement in a threaded opening on a barrel or drum, and includes a passage for connection to a suction tube extending into the barrel. A check valve is carried by the base assembly in a conventional manner, and the upper section of the base assembly is designed to receive a cylindrical pump cylinder in slidable close fitting relationship, and is also provided with means for tightly clamping such pump cylinder in the upper section of the body member. A sealing means such as a resilient gasket is included to provide afluid tight seal between the base assembly and the pump cylinder.

In some i i In accordance with one specific aspect of the invention, a unique sealing means is provided including two annular segments joined one to the other throughout their circumference and adapted to provide a sealing relationship between the base assembly and the pump cylinder in a unique manner to be described in detail below.
It is a feature of this invention that the base assembly is comprised of a unitary body member which is preferably a cast piece. In addition to the body member, a
floating disc check valve and a sealing means or gasket are provided to make up the base assembly. The means for clamping the body member to a pump cylinder preferably includes a lug or protuberance at each side of a slot cut in the upper section of the body member, and including a threaded bolt adapted to draw the two lug members toward each other to effect clamping of a cylinder received in the upper section of the body memher.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved base assembly for connecting a pump cylinder to an opening in the top of a fluid container.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a base assembly which allows a pump cylinder received therein to be rotated to any desired position prior to clamping the cylinder in the base assembly.
It is still afurther object of the invention to provide an improved sealing means between the body member of the base assembly and the pump cylinder received therein.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described in conjunction with the several views of the drawings.
FIG. 1 illustrates a drum or barrel 10 and a container 11 resting on the top of barrel 10 for receiving fluid pumped from within the barrel by a pump shown generally at 12. A suction tube 13 extends from the pump into the lower interior portion of barrel 10 to form a passage from the interior of the barrel and through the pump as is conventional. 1
FIG. 2 illustrates the base assembly 14 of this invention connecting the pump 12 to the top 15 of barrel 10 by means of the threaded section 16 of body member cases this extension "18 might be threaded or otherwise adapted to attach to the top end of the suction tube 13. The body member 17 has two lugs or protuberances 19 and 20 on opposite sides of a vertical slot 21 cut in the upper section of body member 17. A bolt 22 extends through an opening in lug l9 and threads into an opening in lug 20 such that rotation of bolt 22 will draw lugs 19 and 20 toward one another, thereby clamping pump cylinder 24 in the bodymember 17. It can be seen that the pump cylinder can be turned relative to barrel top without loosening the connection of the body member 17 and barrel top 15 by loosening bolt 22 and positioning the pump cylinder 24 as desired.
FIG. 3 illustrates the interior of the base assembly when it is operatively connected to a pump cylinder. As shown in FIG. 3, the body member 17 includes a lower threaded section having threads 16 for connecting the assembly to the threaded opening of a barrel top. The extension 18 for connecting a suction tube in fluid communicating relationship with the pump cylinder 24 through openings in the body member 17 is shown. The upper section of body member 17 receives the pump cylinder 24 therein in close fitting relationship, and is clamped therein by the lugs and bolt as described in reference to FIG. 2. A sealing means or gasket 25 is provided for forming a fluid tight seal between the body member 17 and the pump cylinder 24. A check valve is provided by means of the floating disc 26 which is slidably connected to the neck portion 27 extending upward from the center of body member 17. An upper shoulder 28 for limiting the upward movement of the disc 26 is provided as shown in FIG. 3 by a screw head 29 extending into the neck 27. A lower shoulder 30 is provided, and this lower shoulder in conjunction with a ridge 31 prevents fluid which has been lifted into the pump cylinder 24 from returning through the suction tube during the downstroke of the pump plunger. As can be seen, during the upstroke of the pump plunger, the floating disc 26 is raised to the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 3, and fluid from the barrel passes through the extension 18 as shown by the dotted arrows in FIG. 3.
FIG. 4 illustrates a preferred configuration of the sealing means in accordance with one aspect of the invention. A cross section of the sealing means 25 is shown in FIG. 4, and enlarged cross sections show the sealing means in its normal configuration (FIG. 5), and in its operative configuration (FIG. 6). The sealing means 25 includes a first annular section 32, illustrated as generally rectangular in cross section, and a second annular section 33, illustrated as a generally triangular cross section. The two annular sections are joined throughout the circumference of the sealing means 25 by a common portion 34 such that the sealing means 25 is unitary.
As best seen in FIGS. 5 and 6, sealing means 25 is shaped to abut the lower end 35 of pump cylinder 24 and to contact the lower inner wall surface of pump cylinder 24 when the pump cylinder is inserted into the body member 17 as seen in FIG. 6. When in its normal configuration, as illustrated in FIG. 5, the sealing means 25 includes a surface 36 which depends inwardly and downwardly from the juncture 34 of the two annular sections of sealing means 25. Upon insertion of pump cylinder 24 in body member 17, the first annular section 32 will be received in a groove 37 formed around body member 17, and the inwardly and downwardly depending surface 36 will contact a protruding surface 38 just interior of groove 37, causing the vertical surface 40 of the second annular section 33 to be pressed against the lower innerwall of pump cylinder 24 as shown in FIG. 6. Thus it can be seen that the second annular section 33 provides a pressure sealed surface between both the inner lower wall of pump cylinder 24 and the protruding surface 38 of body member 17, resulting in an effective seal between the two members. After insertion of the pump cylinder 24 in body member 17 and rotation thereof to the desired position, the bolt 22 is tightened in lug 20 to clamp the pump cylinder 24 within the body member 17. Should it be desired to reposition the outlet of the pump 12, the bolt 22 can be loosened and the pump cylinder rotated to the new position.
The connection of T. barrel pump to a barrel using the pump base assembly of this invention will now be described. First the body member 17 is threaded into an opening in the top of barrel 10. The clamping bolt 22 is loosely connected to lug 20, or it can be inserted in lug 20 after the pump cylinder is inserted in the body member. The sealing means 25 is inserted into the body member such that the first annular section 32 will be received in the groove 37 of body member 17. The pump cylinder 24 is then inserted into the top section of body member 17, and is forced therein until the annular section 32 of sealing means 25 is recessed in the groove 37. At this point the lower end surface 35 of pump cylinder 24 will contact the upper surface of first annular section 32, and the inwardly and downwardly depending surface 36 of the second annular section 33 will contact the protruding surface 38 of body member 17. The second annular section 33 will then provide a sealing relation between the lower inner wall surface of cylinder 24 and the protruding surface 38 of body member 17. Due to the resilient nature thereof, and to the particular configuration, the seals formed at this point will be urged tightly against the sealing surfaces. After the pump cylinder 24 is rotated to obtain the de sired relationship of the pump outlet to the barrel top, the bolt 22 is tightened to draw lugs 19 and 20 together and to effect clamping of the pump cylinder in the body member 17. The pump 12 is then actuated in a conventional manner, utilizing upper and lower check valves, to pump a desired amount of fluid from the barrel 10.
If it is desired to change the orientation of the pump with respect to the barrel top, it is only necessary to loosen bolt 22 and rotate the cylinder as desired, and then to retighten bolt 22 to again clamp the pump cylinder to the base assembly.
The above description of the preferred embodiment of this invention, including a preferred configuration of a sealing means for use in conjunction therewith, was for purposes of illustrating the invention, and should not be construed as limiting the scope thereof. It will be apparent that various modifications and alterations could be made without departing from the actual scope of the invention, which is defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A pump base assembly for connecting a pump cylinder and a fluid container comprising:
a body member having an upper section adapted to receive a cylinder and a lower section adapted to be connected to a fluid container;
fluid passage means in the body member adapted to be connected to a suction tube extending into a fluid container;
check valve means in the body member for opening and closing a passage between the fluid passage means and the upper section of the body member; means for sealing between the body member anda cylinder received in the upper section thereof; and means on the upper section of the body member for clamping a cylinder received therein, said means including a vertically oriented slot formed in the upper section of the body member and means on each side of the slot adapted to be drawn toward one another to effect clamping of a cylinder received in the upper section of the body member.
2. The pump base assembly of claim 1 wherein the means on each side of the slot is a pair of lugs projecting from the upper section of the body member, and threaded means are provided for drawing the lugs toward one another.
3. The pump base assembly of claim 2 wherein the means for sealing between the body member and a cylinder received in the upper section thereof is a resilient gasket adapted to contact the lower end surface and the lower inner surface of said cylinder.
4. The pump base assembly of claim 3 wherein the gasket includes a first annular section having an upper surface for contacting the lower end of a cylinder received in the body member and a second annular section joined to the first annular section, the second annular section including a surface extending upwardly from the inner edge of said upper surface, and a surface extending downwardly and inwardly from the juncture of said annularsections, and the body member has a gasket receiving groove formed therein for receiving said first annular section and a horizontal surface adjacent to and interior of said groove for contacting the downwardly and inwardly extending surface of said second annular section.

A pump base assembly for connecting a pump cylinder and a fluid container comprising: a body member having an upper section adapted to receive a cylinder and a lower section adapted to be connected to a fluid container; fluid passage means in the body member adapted to be connected to a suction tube extending into a fluid container; check valve means in the body member for opening and closing a passage between the fluid passage means and the upper section of the body member; means for sealing between the body member and a cylinder received in the upper section thereof; and means on the upper section of the body member for clamping a cylinder received therein, said means including a vertically oriented slot formed in the upper section of the body member and means on each side of the slot adapted to be drawn toward one another to effect clamping of a cylinder received in the upper section of the body member.
2. The pump base assembly of claim 1 wherein the means on each side of the slot is a pair of lugs projecting from the upper section of the body member, and threaded means are provided for drawing the lugs toward one another.
3. The pump base assembly of claim 2 wherein the means for sealing between the body member and a cylinder received in the upper section thereof is a resilient gasket adapted to contact the lower end surface and the lower inner surface of said cylinder.
4. The pump base assembly of claim 3 wherein the gasket includes a first annular section having an upper surface for contacting the lower end of a cylinder received in the body member and a second annular section joined to the first annular section, the second annular section including a surface extending upwardly from the inner edge of said upper surface and a surface extending downwardly and inwardly from the juncture of said annular sections, and the body member has a gasket receiving groove formed therein for receiving said first annular section and a horizontal surface adjacent to and interior of said groove for contacting the downwardly and inwardly extending surface of said second annular section.
