2 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures LIQUID DISCHARGE NOZZLE AND SPLASH BAFFLE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The invention consists of a splash baffle on a discharge nozzle such as is used on filling station gasoline pumps.
2. Description of the Prior A When a gasoline filling station attendant inserts a dispensing nozzle into a vehicle gas tank and later removes the nozzle from the tank, at the same time manipulating the valve handle, there is frequently a spray or splash of the gasoline over the hand of the attendant. The object of the present invention is to avoid such spray or splash reaching the attandants hand.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a side view of a liquid discharge nozzle with the splash baffle applied.
FIG. 2 is a transverse section through the nozzle spout and a front'view of the baffle taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal section through the nozzle spout and baffle showing the adjacent end of the nozzle body and is taken on line 33 of FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The nozzle as illustrated is such as is in common use and includes a body 5 having a valve handle 7, a handle guard 9 and a cylindrical outlet spout 1 1 secured to the outlet by an annular threaded nut 13.
The splash baffle is applied to the nozzle over the outer end of the spout and includes a central aperture receiving the spout and having a short cylindrical flange 17 which yields to tightly grip the spout or the adjacent coil of a spring 19 surrounding the spout. The baffle is saucer shaped with a perimetric flange 21 stiffening the baffle transversely of its plane but yielding readily upon contact with a pump or vehicle tank member. Additional stiffening elements such as radiating ridges 23 may be provided if desired.
The baffle extends radially of the spout and has an over-all diameter corresponding to the depth of the nozzle body and guard, and protects the users hand from gasoline which may be spilled or splashed fro the outer end of the nozzle.
The details as described may be varied from those shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention and the exclusive use of such modifications as come within the scope of the claims is contemplated.
We claim:
I. In combination, a liquid dispensing nozzle including a body with a handhold and a valve handle guard projecting laterally therefrom and an elongated spout extending from one end of the body, a coil spring surrounding the spout to engage a tank inlet and limiting the insertion of the spout into the inlet, and a saucershaped splash baffle of yielding plastic material radiating from the spout and having a central aperture with a cylindrical flange tightly gripping the nozzle spout and adjacent spring coil and holding the baffle substantially perpendicular to the spout and spaced from the handhold and valve handle guard.
2. A combination as described in claim 1 which includes an elongated coil spring surrounding the spout and seated at one end against the body, and the baffle has a central flange slidable over the spout and flanged to engage a coil of the spring to hold the baffle against movement away from the body.
