TOOL-HOLDER FOR LATHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,878, dated November 29, 1887.

In my present improvement the tool is adj listed in position by a rocking movement. This in itself is not new; but in the devices of this general character before constructed the tool is liable to slide endwise after adjustment, because only one clamping-screw is used, and it is difficult to replace the tool accurately after removal for grinding.
By my present improvements I make use of two clamping-screws in connection with a collar and rocking washer, so that one of the screws becomes a gage to facilitate the setting or adjustment of the tool. The tool is held very rigidly and the parts occupy but little space. I also make the base of the tool-post rest in such a manner as to receive a clampingcollar that is made in one piece and eonines the base within a recess in the bed or crossslide, so that it is held very rmly; but by the loosening of one or two clamping-bolts the tool- `post rest can be turned around into the desired position and then again clamped.

lIhe tool-post is supported by a rest or bed, E, of any suitable character. In turninglathes this will usually be the cross slide or rest upon the shears or bed. In the top of this bed E is a circular recess at 2, into which is fitted the bottom of the conical base F below the toolpost, and usually the compound rest lVI inter- Fig. 8 is a sec-4 venes between the tool-'post and the base F, such compound rest being made in the two parts 3 and 4, the upper one being adjustable upon the lower one by means of a screw, 5,and handle or hand-wheel 6, as usual.
Theconical base F is made in two paris, the upper portion, 7, of which is cylindrical, and the lower partis aconical ring, 8, screwed upon a projection below the portion 7, and held from unscrewing by a set pin or screw, 9.
The clamping-collar Gis made in one piece, and it fits around the part 7 of the base and around the conical edges of the ring 8,and the bolts H pass through the collar G into the rest or bed E.
In consequence of the conical base F being made in two parts, I am able to use a collar G that is not in two pieces, because this collar G- is put around the cylindrical part 7 before the ring 8 is screwed on. The collar G and its screws clamp the base F firmly down into the recess 2, so that itis immovable until the clamping screws are slackened. The parts occupy very little space and do not raise the tool-post unnecessarily high, and by providing a cylindrical flange, 15, on the upper part of this ring G the same is greatly strengthened and the bearing around the cylindrical portion 7 is increased. v
The tool-post A is provided with a head, 10, which is within a recess at the under side of the top plate, 3, of the compound slide-rest M, and there is a top piece, 11, to the tool-post, through which pass the clamping and gage screws D D', and B is a collar around the toolpost. Beneath the tool K is the rocking washer or plate C. The under surface of this rocking washer or plate is either convex or concave, and the portion of the collar B upon which the rocking washer rests corresponds in shape. The entire upper surface of the collar B may be spherically convex or concave to correspond to the rocking washer, or such collar may be slotted on its upper surface with a concave or convex bottom corresponding to the shape of the rocking washer or plate C, as seen in Figs. 1 and 5. It will now be evident that by turning the screws D D the toolKwill be adj usted and clamped, and the rocking washer allows for raising or depressing the cutting-edge of Y the tool, and when the tool is to be removed for sharpening it is only necessary to loosen ICO the screw D', and the screw D can remain as a gage to aid in resetting the tool when replaced, and the tool cannot become loose or slide endwise, because the tool cannot rock so long as both the screws are set down firmly upon it.
It will be evident that itis necessary to re move either the head 10 of the tool-post or the top piece, 11, in order to get the collar B around the tool-post,sucl1 collar B being preferably a complete ring. To effect this either part 10 or 11 may be unscrewcd. In Fig. 1 I have shown the head 10 as screwed on and the top piece, 11. as solid with the post, and in detached Fig. 8 the top piece, 11. is screwed on and the head l0 is solid with the tool-post. In this last-named case the tool-post will be received into an openendcd slotin the top part, 3, ofthe slide-rest M.
The collar B is preferably of one piece of metal; but it may be made in two pieces received into a base-ring, B', as shown in detached Fig. 6.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with the rest or bed E, having a circularly-recessed surface, 2, of the conical base F, formed of a ring, 8, fastened upon the cylindrical portion 7, the undivided clamping-collar G, and bolts for holding the base F irmly into the recess 2, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,with the tool-post A,of the collar B and rocking washer C, upon which the tool rests, and the two clamping and adjusting screws D D', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, With the collar B and rocking washer, of a tool-post having a head at the lower end and a top piece, one of which is removable, and screwsD D,passing through the top piece and acting to adjust and clamp the tool, substantially as set forth.
4. The com bi11ation,with the conical base F, having the cylindrical portion 7 and conical ring 8, ofthe clamping-collar' G,Iitt,ing around theconical base and havinga cylindrical liange, 15, and the clampingvscrews, substantially as sct forth.
5. The coxnbination,with the rest or bed E, of the conical base F, formed of a ring fastened upon the cylindrical portion 7, the undivided clamping-collar G, and bolts for holding the base F, substantially as set forth.
