Description
UNITED STATES FATnNT Orricn.
JOHN O. NYE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,356, dated January 6,1863.
To all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN C. NYE, of Uin cinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Im provement upon my Breech-Loading Fire- Arm, for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted November 4, 1862; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which Figure l is a horizontal section of the breech of the fire-armwith the key or gate C shut down. Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. 1 with the key or gate O open. Fig. 3 is a View of the key or gate C, having a small roller in the end of the improvement G. Fig. iis the same as Fig. 3, except it be without the roller. Fig. 5 is a section of the breech-pin or plunger, the top being off, showing the opening in the head where the improvement G works.
A is a section of the barrel of the fire-arm.
B is the breech-pin or plunger.
G is the key or gate which holds the breechpin or plunger B inits place when shut down, and also closes the opening in the side of the barrel.
D is a hingejoint on which the key or gate C swings in the head of the breech-pin or plunger B.
E is a spring which holds the key or gate C in its place open or shut down.
F is a screw which holds the spring Ein its place. F is also used as a handle or knob to open the key or gate C.
G is the improvement attached to the end of the key or gate C, where it works inside of the head of the breech-pin or plunger B, the end of G striking the end of the barrel on the opening of the key or gate C, throwing the breech-pin or plunger B out about onetenth of an inch, thereby breaking the adhesion caused by firing the arm, or from any other cause, and thereby causing the breeclr pin or plunger B to move out easy, the key or gate C acting as a lever, D being the fulcrum or prop, and the end of G resting on the end of the barrel, as seen in Figs. l and 2.
h is a small roller inserted in the end of G, as seen in Fig. 3, to act on the end of the barrel, and which may be dispensed with.
W'hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arm G, attached to the key or gate C, substantially as described in the specication and shown in the accompanying drawings.
JOHN c. Nrn.
