SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,498, dated November22, 1887.
Application filed August 12, 1887.

Be it known that I, HAXNIBAL L. SWEET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac, State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slcighs or Sleds, of which the following is aspecification,reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 1ngs.
Myinvention relates to improvements in the construction of the crossbeams ot' the runningframe and their connection with the spindles pivotally united to the knees and runners of sleighs or sleds; and the objects of my improvements are to give broad and firm bearings tothe bed of the sleighs, to render the connection light and strong, to allow the runners to adjust themselves,independcntlyof each other, to uneven surfaces, and to prevent creaking noises of the parts when the sleigh is in use. I accomplish these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents in perspective a front and rear sled constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 represents in perspective the same rear sled with nearly all its parts disconnected. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a portion of one of the cross-beams and runners, and also of one of the iron knees and its spindle. Fig. i is a transverse sec tion of a portion of one of the cross-beams 'andits spindle, with spokes inserted in the latter and in the runner.
In said drawings, A represents the longitudinal raves of the running-frame, B the bottom or runner proper, and G the knees or spokes, having their lower end connected with the runners and their upper end with spindles D, and the latter have reduced portions or gudgeons d at each end, that are received in boxes or bearings E, secured to the under side of the cross-beams F. No reach is required to keep the beams in place. The box or bed of the sleigh can be attached to the cross-beams behind and to the rocker F in front. The cross-beams are double on each sled. The rocker is also double, so that the Serial No. 2i(3,787. (No model.)
sleigh can be attached firmly to the bed, with enough bearing to prevent it from Working loose on account of the rocking 1notion,as this defect is often found with the ordinary beam and rocker or bolster. The double crossbeams allow the runners to play up and down to a limited extent. When iron knees, as O, are used, their upper end is provided with a collar, c,to receive the spindle D. Said collar is internally slightly tapering and the spindle is driven tightly therein. The top of the collar is provided with flanges, or with a plate, 0', having perforations to receive bolts to secure it to the rave A. When spokes are used to connect the runners with the spindles D, the latter are mortiscd to receive the tenons at the upper end of said spokes.
I am aware that sleighs have been provided with axles extending from one side to the other; but when a wooden hub and axle are used they are heavy, cumbersome, and noisy.
I am also aware that bolts have been used in place ol'spiudlcs; but the latter,having more leverage, can stand the twist and side strain much better.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim" 1. In combination with the raves of sleighs and their runners, the knees provided with a collar, 0, having tlanges thereon, the double cross-beams F, bearings secured to the under side of said double beams, and spindles hav ing their ends retained in said bearings, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the raves and runners of sleighsthe parallel double cross-beams F of each sled resting upon said raves, and bearings secured to the under side of said double beams, spindles having their ends retained in said bcarings,and supports connecting said spindles with the runners, substantially as described.
