UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES TIMMS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO B. M.
ROUND, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,422, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed September 15. 1887. Serial No. 249.764. (No model.)
Fig. 2 is a view of the drop-pin detached, and 'Fig. 3 is a side view of the knuckle detached.
Referring to the letters upon the drawings, A indicates the draw-bar,and B the draw-head.
G O are coupling jaws or knuckles pivoted at D and provided with heels E, and adapted to interlock by striking against the curved faces F of the draw-heads when two cars are brought together.
G indicates a coupling;pin, rectangular in one part and cut away or triangular in the other part, as shown. When the coupling-pin is raised so that the triangular part comes opposite the heels of the coupling-jaws,they will open freely by pulling or by spring action, so that two cars will readily separate; but when the couplingpin is down in place at H, so that the square part comes opposite the heel ends, then the jaws will be firmly locked together.
I indicates a notch or shoulder upon each of the coupling-jaws, and K indicates a corresponding shoulder or stop upon each of the are open,of course their forward ends will pass each other and strike the curved part of the draw-head,which will bear them inward and close them together, when the coupling pin will drop down so that its square part will lock the knuckles firmly together.
L indicates a curved coiled spring bearing at one end against the stop Kand at the other against the heel E, which tends to open the jaws whenever the pin is raised, so that the triangular part is opposite the heel E.
M indicates an arm or plate which projects from the knuckle in front of the heel and operates to close the opening in the drawhead and keep out snow and ice in Winter.
Having described my improved car-coupler, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with the draw-head of a carcoupler having a curved striking-face, F, of the knuckle pivoted at D, the shoulderI upon theknuckle, theshoulder or stop Kupon the draw head, the coil spring H, the coupling-pin G, adapted to work against the heel E of the knuckle, and the arm M, projecting from the knuckle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the draw-head of a car-coupler, of the knuckle pivoted at D,the shoulder or stop K upon the draw-head, the coupling-pin G, adapted to work against the heel of the knuckle, and the coil-spring M, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
J AMES TIMMS.
