WOOD-PLANING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,411, dated November 15, 1887.
(N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT S. MYRIcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVood-Planing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of rear end of planing-machine with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, partly in section, of my attachment ona planing-ma chine. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my attachmentand part of rear end of planing-machine. Fig. 4. is a detail, partly in section and partly in plan.
Myinvention has relation to planingmachines; and it has for its object to provide means in the form of an attachment whereby two side heads and their pulleys may be readily added to a machine having a top and a bottom cutter, either or both, said added side heads being laterally adjustable on the frame of the machine, substantially as hereinafter described.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of the cutter-head attachment and its combination with the planing-machine, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A
indicates the rear end of a planing-machine, having a lowering bed, A, and the usual means for adjusting the altitude of said bed. Such machine is supposed to be provided with only a top and a bottom cutter-head, either or both, and it is desired to provide the same with two side cutter-heads.
B B are knee-plates in the form of L-shaped brackets, secured to the bed A by bolts b b.
To the knee-plates B B is fastened a transverse bar, 0, bolts 0 a connecting said parts rigidly together. The back or exposed side of the bar 0 has a dovetail groove, 0', which receives dovetail slides d on boxes D D.
E represents another bar rigidly secured to the bed A by inclined braces F F. Said bar E has longitudinal slots 6 (2, through which pass transverse set-screws E E, which enter boxes G G.
H H are brackets, the upper ends of which form the boxes D D, and the lower parts the boxes G G.
I I are vertical spindles, having side cutterheads, K K, and pulleys L L. These spindles have bearings at their upper ends in the boxes D D, and also bearings at their lower ends in the boxes G G. \Vithin the boxes G G are caps gg. held to the spindles I I by draw-bolts g g. The boxes D D have similar caps held to the spindles by draw-bolts d cl.
M M are adj usting-screws having handwheels at m. Said screws have hearings in fixed collars or boxes m m, fastened to the bar 0, and they are swivelcd at their inner ends in a central guide, N, which is secured by bolts n n to said bar 0. The screws M M fit and turn in threaded openings in the boxes D D, so that when said screws are rotated they cause said boxes to be moved transversely, or to slide laterally on the frame of the machine, or to be adjusted toward or from the central or middle line'of the latter.
Before turning the screws M M the setscrews E E should be loosened. Then, by turning screws M, the boxes D D and G G, or the brackets H H, of which said boxes form parts, with the spindles I I, will be moved together. \Vhen the desired adjustment is secured, the jam-nuts c e on the screws E E are turned on and made fast.
It will be noted that my invention provides an attachment which can be readily applied to an ordinary planing-machine unprovided With side cutter-heads; also, that said attachment comprises means whereby the added cutterheads may be readily adjusted to accommodate different widths of lumber requiring to be planed. It is an advantage to have the pulleys below the cutter-heads rather than above, for the convenience of the workman and to diminish vibration of the heads, and by connecting the attachment with a lowering ,bed vertical as well as lateral adjustment of the heads is secured; but the attachment may of course be made to a stationary bed.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In a planing-machine having a lowering bed, A, the combination, with said bed, of the IOU dovetail grooved plate 0, secured to the rear end thereof, the dovetailed side-cutter bearings D D, located on either side of the center ofsaid bed and formed with screw-bearings for 5 the passage of adj listing-screws, the slotted bar E, rigidly secured to the bed A below the plate 0, the cutter-heads K, with shafts I, journaled in the bearings D D, the boxes G G, forming end bearings for shafts I, and secured [O to the bar E by screws E, and the horizontal adj usting-screws M, having spindlesjournaled in the boxes m, formed on the plate 1, sub- Stantially as described.
2. In a planing-machine, the combination,
