4 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures CONVERTIBLE TABLE BED SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION My invention is an item of furniture which is convertible from a table to a bed.
A purpose of my invention which I call a convertatable is to furnish greater utilization of space in such areas as nurseries, playrooms, and dens, as well as in vacation cabins or yachts where the same area is used for both daytime activities and sleeping quarters.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The objects and features of my invention may be understood with reference to the following detailed description of an illustrative embodiment of the invention taken together with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention illustrating the converta-table used as a coffee table;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the invention through line 2-2 of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the invention illustrating the use of the converta-table as a full length bed.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Turning now descriptively to the drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the several views, FIG. 1 illustrates the use of invention as an item of living room furniture, with a table top, comprising end removable sections and 12 and center removable section 11. Sides 19, 20, 21 and 22 of the removable sections 10, 11 and 12 completely conceal the mattress 16 which is beneath the table top.
For ease in removing the table tops l0, l1 and 12, decorative grooves 30, 31 and 32 may be placed in the sides 20, 21 and 22 of the table tops to create finger grips without destroying the flush appearance of the converta-table.
When used as a table as shown in FIG. 1, the table tops 10, 11 and 12 are supported by platform 17 which engages strips 26 which are fastened permanently to the inside lower edges of sides 19, 20, 21 and 22 of the table tops.
FIG. 3 shows the converta-table used as a bed with mattress l6 resting on platform 17 surrounded on all sides by permanent shell 15. The table tops 10, 11 and 12 which have been removed may be stored on shelf 13 located between bases 14 and 18. Shelf 13 also serves to reinforce the structure in joining bases 14 and 18 which are of hollow construction.
In the preferred embodiment, the length of the unit is preferably about 72 inches, the width of the table tops are 40 inches and the height of the table tops from the floor level is inches, but such dimensions are given for illustrative purposes and are not to be construed in a limiting sense. Furthermore the illustration of the preferred embodiment is along the lines of a contemporary furniture style known as Modern, but the converta-table can be as readily styled along other lines such as Colonial, Provincial or Traditional.
A further modification encompassed in my invention is the use of a protective surface on table tops 10, 11 and 12 to serve as functional work surfaces when the table is used in a nursery, a playroom or a yacht.
Since many obvious changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the invention described herein without departing from the scope thereof, it is indicated that all matter contained herein is intended to be interpreted in an illustrative and not a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A table adaptable to being converted into a bed, comprising a base structure for supporting a platform bearing a mattress, said platform being wider and longer than said mattress, a central table top cover which is wider than said platform, said central table top cover having sides which extend from the upper surface of the table top to below the bottom of the platform, said sides having inner projections near their lower edges so that the inner projections rest on the platform, the inner projections being so located as to keep the under surface of the table top above the upper surface of the mattress, and two end table top covers which are each wider than the platform, the lengths of said end table top covers being such that when assembled together with the central table top cover, the total length of the three covers is greater than the length of the platform, said end top covers having sides which extend below the platform with inner projections on the sides that rest on the platform.
2. A table adaptable to being converted into a bed as described in claim I, in which the base structure for supporting the platform consists of two members separated from each other by a distance which is greater than one-third the total length of the three table top covers.
3. The combination as recited in claim 2, in which the space separating the members that comprise the base structure is greater in the longitudinal direction of the structure than is the width of each of the three table top covers, with a horizontal shelf mounted between the base members, and fastened at each end to one of said base members for the purpose of supporting the three table top covers when the structure is employed as a bed, with the height between the upper surface of the shelf member and the undersurface of the platform resting on the base members being greater than the total height of the three table top covers, in the stored configuration.
4. A table adaptable to being converted into a bed as described in claim 6 in which each of the sides of the table top covers has recessed grooves to act as lifting points.
