HARNESS BUCKLE.
Patented Nov. 15,1887.

v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY NEILL, OF SINGLAIRVILLE, NEW YORK.
HARNESS-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,245, dated November 15, 1887.
Application filed March 29, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN HENRY NEILL, of Sinclairville, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Harness-Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved buckle, designed more particularly for use on the crupper and hip-straps of harness, the object being to provideapractical buckle which will not catch the hair of a horses tail, and under which the line cannot be caught, as with the ordinary form of buckles, and which will prevent the line from catching under the end of the hip-strap.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view showing my new form of buckle applied to a hip-strap, and
showing the angle-straps which lead to the breeching of the harness;'and Fig. '2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
A represents the body of the buckle, formed in the center with the stud a,which enters the holes in the, strap B and serves as a tongue to retain the strap. At its upper end the body A is formed with the loop 0, which stands a sufficient distance above the body A to permit the ready insertion of the strap B, and at Serial No. 232,869. (No model.)
its lower end the body A is formed with the ring D, which also constitutes a loop, D, for the strap B. The loops 0 D, one above and the other below the stud a, hold the strap in contact with the body A, so that there is no danger of its detachment from the stud a. The ring D is on a higher level than the body A, so that it stands in front of the strap B, and to. it are connected the two straps B B, which connect with the breeching. In this manner the straps B and ring D entirely prevent the lines from catching under the hip-strap, and the stud a, not being exposed above the outer surface of the strap B, will not catch the horses tail. f, through which rivets may be passed for securing the buckle to the strap.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improvedbuckle herein described, comprising the body A, having stud a, the loop C at one end and the loop D at the other, and the ring D, formed as a part of the loop D and on a higher level than the body A, substantially as described.
JOHN HENRY NEILL.
