UNITED STATES PATENT Darren,

WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372.873, ated November 8, 1887.
Application filed March 15. 1887.
.To a'ZZ whom it maty concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN S. SMI'rH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Stone Church, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Wagon-Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.v
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in wagon-brakes; and it consists in the detailed construction, combination, and arrangelnent of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim's.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a planview-of my invention, Fig; 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing portions of myinvention in different positions.
In carrying out my invention I employ the ordinary hounds, connected at their rear ends to the vehicle-axle a, and upon these ends of the houndsis disposed the ordinary bolster, as shown. I
B is the horizontally-disposed wagon-brake rod or bar, on the outer ends of which are secured by ordinary means shoes b b. This brake rod or bar' is supported in hanger-plates b', secured to the under side of the hounds, as shown in Fig. 2. To the center of thisI brake rod or bar is secured the forward end of a rod, G, which end of the rod is screw-threaded, and, after beingv passed through the aperture in said brake rod or bar,iis secured by an ordinary The other rear end of this central rod, O, is secured by means of a nutted bolt to the short arm d of a main lever, D, which lever is fulcrumed in a projecting two-'armed plate, d', secured to the vehicle-axle a. Against this short arm of the main lever D bears the forward end of a strong spring, dz, secured at its other end to the front side of the vehicle-axle, the purpose of which will appear farther on. 1
Through a hollow bowl-like portion, e, of the main lever D is passed a small rod, the outer rear end of which has two short parallel arms, between which is pivoted the inner end of a second smaller lever, D', the outer end of which projects beyond the end of the main lever D, and to this outer 'end of the smaller lever, D',
Serial No. 230.984. (No model.)
is secured a cord or chain,f, the purpose of which will appear farther on.
F is a ratchet-bar secured at one end to the under side of one of the hounds and at its other end to the vehicle-axle a, as shown, and the upper horizoutal surfaceof this ratchetbar has the teeth or ratchets projecting forward` and at the rear end of said ratchet-teeth is an inclined portion,', the purpose of which will appear hereinafter.
The under side of the lever D has a toothlike surface for engaging with the teeth of the ratchet-bar F, and the outer end of said lever is of an approximately V Shape, from the upper -side of which projects rearwardly a finger, f
outwardly on the short arm of the main lever D, causing the outer end of the longer arm thereof to be at the rear end of the ratchetbar, and when in this position the smaller lever, D', is forced upon the incline f' of the ratchet-bar, and the tooth-like portion of saidv main lever is held in engagement with the rearmost toothof the said ratchet-bar.
By pulling on the cord or chainf, which in practice is extended to the driverls seat, the
`lever D' will be pulled on the shoulder g and the shoulder g onto the ratchet-teeth, and by i reason of a bevel, g, fornied on the upper forward edge of this lever, the same will be caused to fit slightly in under the rear incline of the V-shaped end of the main lever D. From this it will be seen that when it is desired to re- IOO lease the ln'ake the same can-be l'ezlflily ef fected by pllllillg' on tlle eol'd ol' ehain f, which will cause the V-shaped end of the main level' to be l'aised np on to the bevel g of the level' D'out of engagement with tlle l'alehet-teeth, and the spring bearing on tlle sh ortarln of the level' D will fol'ee both levers to the l'eal' end of the ratehetbzll', the level' D' sliding up on the ineline f' and the level` D engaging the rearnlost tooth, as before desel'ibed.
My invention is so eonstl'neted that the same is applieable to Wagons of long ol' short gear, and the working` of the device is in nolvise affeeted by the extent of the load carried by the Vvelliele to which applied.
I do not restriet myself to l'he application of my wagon-bralte to the real' Wheels of a vehicle, as the salne can with eqnal faeility be applied to thell'ontwlleels thel'eof; and. flll'thel', if desil'ed, that part of nlyinvention embodyintr the lllaill and small level's and l'atchetbar may be employed in eollnection lvilll'a l'ailway-cal' ol` mill.
Having thus fully desel'ibed my invenlion, what I clailn, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hel'ein-descl'ibed wagon-make, eom pl'ising the brake l'od or bar, the central conneeting-rod, the main level', the spring, the smaller lever, and the ratehet-bal', all arranged suhstantially as shown and desel'ibed.
2. The ('oml'illal'ion, with the lvagolrbrake and conneeting-rod, of the main level' having a V-shaped end and a projecting finger, the snlallel' level' engaging with said end of the nlain level', the Operating eol'd or Chain, and the l'atehet-bar, snbstantially as shown and de- Scribed.
3. The combination, With the wagon'brake and the eonneeting-l'od, of the pivoted main level' having a tooth-like surface, the spring bearing against the short al'ln of said lever, the slllallel` level' having a bevel, the ratehet-bar provided with an incline at one end, and the pivoted llol'izontal bar, all al'ranged substantially as shown and deseribed.
4. The combination, With the bl'ake l'od or bal' alld the eonneeting-l'od, of the main level' having the V'shaped end, thesholllder and projcctin` finger fol'nled thel'elvith, the pivoted slnallel' level' having a bevel, the l'atehet-bar provided with an illelille at its real' end, and the Operating.,I` eord or Chain, all constrneted alld al'l'anged to opel'ate in the manner substantially as shown and desel'ibd.
Ill testimony whereof I affix nly signature in presence of two witllesses.
VARREN S. SMITH.
