F R. DRINKHOUSE & E. ZIESCHE. SAFETY LOOK FOR GAS BURNERS.
No. 372,789. Patented Nov; 8, 1887.

PATENT @rrrca.
DRINKHOUSE AND EDWARD ZIESCHE, OF SAN FRANCISCO,
CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY=LOCK FOR GAS=BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 372,789, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed March 21. 1887. Serial No. 231,784. ("No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDRIOK R. DRINK- HOUSE and EDWARD Zrnsonn, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Locks for Gas-Burners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of our said invention, reference being bad to the drawings that accompany and form apart oft-hisspecification.
Our invention has for its object to provide a safety device for gas-burners which shall prevent the key from being improperly turned or set by careless or ignorant persons.
It consists in a novel locking device that is selfacting, and also in the combination, with such device, of a signal bell or alarm which shall produce sufficient sound at the time of turning the key and at the point when the gas is cut off to signify that the burner is safely V be operated by the movement of the key.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3,with the key partly withdrawn and with one side of the key taken off.
A denotes in each figure the body of an ordinary gas-cock.
A is a rim or fixed collar standing away from the body around the orifice in which the plug of the key works and having two notches or slots, a a, in its edge, one diametrically opposite to the other.
13 is the stem or plug of the key,,with the usual aperture, 7), through it, and B is the head of the key. I
Ois aspring pawl or lever pivotally secured by the pin (1 in a recess in the edge of the key, and having a curved end above the pivot In the construct-ion given in the drawings we have provided twoof these locking-levers, as we consider the same preferable to a single lever for general purposes. It will be evident that in so far as the security of the lock is concerned one lever will prove to be quite as effective as two levers; but the use of the two levers will give greater durability, for if one lever becomes broken or gets out of order the other will act. We prefer, therefore, to provide our device with two locking-slots in the fixed rim and two catches on the key.
The construction given in the drawings is simple, compact, and durable. The levers are set into the edges of the key, so that in order to turn onthe gas it is necessary to grasp the edges of the key instead of the face; but for the contrary movement, to shut off the gas, the key is seized fiatwise, and the catches then drop into place as they move around the fixed collar.
The pins (1 (I pass through the body of the key, and the coil-spring sets into a recess pro vided in the key and between the lower ends of the two levers. The face-plate A is removable for the purpose of repairs.
The alarm attachment is shown in Fig. 3. It is produced by fixing the small gong G on the collar above the key and attaching the striker g by a bent wire, g", to the lever C. The movement of the lever as it drops into the slot at is sutficient to throw the striker against the gong, and the sound produced indicates that the key is properly turned into place. In this arrangement the single coil spring serves to operate the striker as well as the levers.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the body of a gascock provided with a slotted rim fixed thereon, of the key or plug provided with a spring catch or pawl pivoted thereto, its upper end 'ICO being adapted to ride on the slotted rim and engage with the slots therein and its lower end projecting from the head of the key below the pivot, as set forth.
5 2. The eoinbinatio11 ,with the body of a gaseoek having a fixed collar or rim provided with notches or slots a a, of the key or plug provided with spring-levers pivoted thereto and projecting from the head thereof below IO the pivot and riding upon or engaged in the slots of said collar at their upper ends, sub stantially as set forth.
3. The eoinbinatiomwith the body of a gascoek having a slotted collar or rim and a gong,
15 G, secured thereon, of the key having a locking lever or levers pivoted in and projecting from the head of said key below the pivots and FREDRIOK R. DRINKIIOUSE. [L. s] EDWARD ZIESCHB. [n s.)
