Abstract

A pair of mandrels providing a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing in which each of the mandrels are adapted to be connected in one of the well tubings and each of the mandrels includes an open bore therethrough and a pocket for receiving flow control devices in which the mandrels are connected together with a fluid conduit extending between the pockets. The mandrels are connected together with the open bores being positioned side by side and the pockets positioned side by side with the open bores.

[ ABSTRACT 5 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures DUPLEX MANDREL FOR A CROSSOVER SYSTEM BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It is common to provide multiple tubings in a well bore for the production of oil and/or gas. And for certain operations, for example for hydraulically pumping down well tools in one of the well tubings, fluid passageways have been provided between the tubings at the subsurface to provide a crossover between the well tubings.
The present invention is directed to an improved crossover system between two strings of well tubing by utilizing a pair of mandrels, for example similar to that shown in US. Pat. No. 3,603,393, which will allow normal access through the open production bores and will provide a crossover system between the mandrel pockets for controlling fluid communication between the mandrels and the open bores.
SUMMARY The present invention is directed to providing a duplex mandrel for a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing in which a pair of mandrels are connected side by side with a fluid conduit extending between the pocket of each mandrel.
Yet a further object is the provision of a pair of mandrels for use in a dual string of well tubing in which each of the mandrels is adapted to be connected into one of the well tubings, and each of the mandrels includes an open bore therethrough and a pocket offset from the bore for receiving a flow control device in which the mandrels are connected together side by side with a fluid conduit extending between the pockets.
A still further object is the provision ofa duplex mandrel for a crossover system in which a pair of mandrels includes an open bore therethrough aligned with or offset from the connected well tubing and including a sidepocket offset from the open bore with the mandrels connected together with the open bores being positioned side by side and the sidepockets being-positioned side by side with a fluid conduit extending between the sidepockets.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to FIG. 1, the numeral generally indicates the duplex mandrel of the present invention which includes identical mandrels 12 and 14 for inser tion into a dual string of well tubing. Thus, one of the mandrels 12, as best seen in FIG. 1, includes a connection at each end such as threads 16 and 18 for connecting the mandrel 12 in one of the well tubings 20. The other mandrel l4 similarly includes connections at each end for connecting into another well tubing (not shown) Each of the mandrels 12 and 14 includes an open bore 22 and 24, respectively, therethrough, preferably in line as best seen in FIG. I, with the well tubing for allowing the normal passage of well tools through the mandrels l2 and 14.
The mandrels l2 and 14 each include a pocket 26 and 28, respectively, for receiving flow control devices such as conventional valves, which may be conventionally installed in the pockets 26 and 28 by a conventional wireline or hydraulic pump in operations. The pockets 26 and 28 as shown are of the sidepocket type, that is, offset from the bore of the well tubing.
As best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, the mandrels l2 and 14 are connected together preferably with the open bores 22 and 24, respectively, being positioned side by side. In addition, the sidepockets 26 and 28 are positioned side by side. The mandrels l2 and 14 are connected together such as by a welding connection 30.
And in order to provide a crossover connection, a fluid conduit 32 is provided connected between the mandrels l2 and 14 through the sidepockets 26 and 28. The fluid crossover 32 between the mandrels l2 and 14 may be controlled by installing or removing suitable flow control valves in either one or both of the sidepockets 26 and 28. Furthermore, the operation of the crossover line 32 may be controlled separate from the normal well operations conducted through the production bores 22 and 24. And by closing off the crossover line 32 wireline operations may be performed in either bore 22 and/or 24 independent of the other tubing string.
The present invention has been described above in connection with the sidepocket type mandrel of FIG. 1 wherein the sidepocket is offset from the bore of the welltubing, However, the present duplex mandrel of the present invention may also be used in connection with an inline sidepocket, such as shown in FIG. 1A, wherein the numerals referring to the parts correspond to those in FIG. 1 but include the suffix a. In the duplex mandrel 10a of FIG. 1A, the sidepockets are generally aligned with the bore of the well tubing 20a and the open bores 22a and 24 are offset from the bore of the well tubing 20a.
The present invention, therefore, is well adapted to carry out the objects and attain the ends and advantages mentioned as well as others inherent therein. While a presently preferred embodiment of the invention is given for the purpose of disclosure, numerous changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art and which are encompassed within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A duplex mandrel for a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing comprising,
a pair of mandrels, each of said mandrels adapted to be connected in one of the well tubings, each of the mandrels including an open bore therethrough and a pocket for flow control devices offset from the bore,
said mandrels being connected together, and a fluid conduit extending between the pockets.
2. A duplex mandrel for a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing comprising,
a pair of mandrels, each of said mandrels adapted to be connected in one of the well tubings, each of be connected in one of the well tubing, each of the mandrels including an open bore therethrough offset from the bore of the connected well tubing, and including a pocket offset from the open bore, and
said mandrels being connected together with the i open bores being positioned side by side and the pockets being positioned side by side, and a fluid conduit extending between the pockets. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the mandrels are welded together.

Claims (5)

1. A duplex mandrel for a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing comprising, a pair of mandrels, each of said mandrels adapted to be connected in one of the well tubings, each of the mandrels including an open bore therethrough and a pocket for flow control devices offset from the bore, said mandrels being connected together, and a fluid conduit extending between the pockets.
2. A duplex mandrel for a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing comprising, a pair of mandrels, each of said mandrels adapted to be connected in one of the well tubings, each of the mandrels including an open bore therethrough aligned with the connected well tubing, and including a sidepocket offset from the open bore, said mandrels being connected together with the open bores being positioned side by side and the sidepockets being positioned side by side, and a fluid conduit extending between the sidepockets.
3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the mandrels are welded together.
4. A duplex mandrel for a crossover system for use in a dual string of well tubing comprising, a pair of mandrels, each of said mandrels adapted to be connected in one of the well tubing, each of the mandrels including an opeN bore therethrough offset from the bore of the connected well tubing, and including a pocket offset from the open bore, and said mandrels being connected together with the open bores being positioned side by side and the pockets being positioned side by side, and a fluid conduit extending between the pockets.
5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the mandrels are welded together.
