To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hub-Attaching Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for connecting hubs to the spindles of vehicleaxles; and
1o the improvements, generally stated, consist of an axle-box having its outer end closed, a thinibleskein attached to the spindle, and a buttingdisk attached to the inner end of the hub and abutting against the end ofthe thini` ble-skein.

I3 is an ordinary wagoiihub, in which is secured a tapering axle-box, C, ot'suitable metal. The outer end, c, of the box C is closed, and may have any desired outward shape-as, for example, that of a nut, as shown in the drawings. The interior of the box end is preferably concave, and in it is inserted a wooden or other suitable plug, D, against which the end of the spindle abuis to limit the inward movement of t-he hub.

p, extending through the skein and spindle. The inner end of the thimble-skein should be chilled to insure durability.
At the inner end of the hub is a buttingfdisk, F, attached to the hub by bolts d, fast in the end ofthe hub, and nuts c, that screwdown onto the disk. The inner end ofthe thiuibleskein abuts against the disk, and'the outer movement of the hub is thereby limited. The bolt-holes in the disk are elongated slotsf,
having one end, f', enlarged for `the nuts to.
pass through as the hub is being put onor taken off. /Vhen the hub is in place, the disk is rotated suiliciently to bring the narrower portions ofthe slots j' under the nuts, and the nuts are then screwed down to hold the disk Securely against the end of the hub. These narrow portions of the slots have suitable countersinks, f2, to receive the nuts when screwed in, to prevent the slipping oi the disk on the hub when in place. The collar or hub f" ofthe disk may be uiade angular, so that it can be grasped by a wrench to turn it; or, if made round, it may have a lug,f, with a hole, into which a pin can be inserted to rotate the disk. Vihen in plaoe,the collar f5 1s free from contact with the shoulders c of the asie, and the bearing-surfaces to limit the longitudinal movement ofthe hub are the skein against the butting-disk at the inner end and the spindle and skein against the plug D at the outer end.
The disk F may be of cast metal having a steel washer, i0, let into an annularrecess around the central opening to abut against the end of the skein, and the washer may be sc cured by screws'w, so that it can be readily removed.' When the frictional surfaces become worn and it is desirable to tighten them, a thicker washer may be substituted for the washer w; or aloose washer may be interposed between the end of the skein andthe butting and a nut, e, are used to tighten the outer or buttingplate in the manner heretofore del the plate G, and the plate H'has vslots h,whiehV coincide with the lugs g when the bolt and nut are in the enlargementf of the slotf, as shown in Fig. 7, so that the plates can be separated. The plate G may be dispensed with by having the lugs g' cast `on the margin of the hub-band b. 'Ihe collar of the plate H is shown of angular form, to be more easily grasped by a Wrench to turn the plates.
The plates G and H are shown in vertical transverse section in Fig. l0, with a thinibleskein in place havingailange, e, fitting within the central opening vof the plate G and abutting against the plate H, thus affording a wider Wearingsurface for the end of the skein than in the form of skein iirst described.
In the lighter kinds of vehicles the plug D in the end of the box may be dispensed with by having the spindle and box constructed to form a suitable end bearing, and an oil-hole for injecting oil may be made in the end of the box and provided with a screw-plug for closl. In combination with a hub and spindle, an axle-box closed at its outer end and secured in the hub, a thimble-skein fastened on the spindle with its outer end flush with the end of the spindle and its inner end flush With the end ofthe axle-box, a suitable bearing-plug between the spindle end and box end to pref vent inward movement of the hub, and a buttng-plate secured to the end of the hub and abutting the end of the thimble-skein to prevent outward movement of the hub, substantially as set forth.

In combination with an axle, its hub and spindle, an axle-box closed at its outer end and providing a bearing-for the spindle end, a thimble-skein with its outer end Hush with the spindle end and its inner end flush with the end of the axle-box, apin securing theskein to the spindle, a butting-plate furnishing a bearing for the inner end of the skein, and means, as described, for attaching the plate to the hub end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
