UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND G. FISHER, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
REGISTERING AND RECORDING WElGHlNG-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,832, dated October 18, 1887.
Application filed January 18, 1887. Serial No. 224,673.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND G. FIsIIEE, of Minneapolis, in the county of. Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Registering and Recording Seales,of which the following is a specification.
The object I have in view is to provide a scale-beam with a poise having means for indi cating the weight represented by the position of the poise of the beam, and with means for forming upon a ticket or slip of paper or other suitable material a record of the reading of the scale.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a sealebeam and a poise having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the follower on thepoise omitted. Fig. 3 is an elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. 41 is a section on line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the arrangement of the pinions. Fig. 6is a detail showingthe pointer and a portion of the dial and plate. p
In the drawings, 2 represents a portion of the scale-beam,whieh may be of any preferred size, style, or construction. This beam is provided with suitable rack-teeth, 3, formed on or secured to it.
5 represents a suitable poise arranged on the beam and adapted to be moved over it in the usual manner. The poiseis provided with a gear, 7, that meshes with the teeth 3 on the beam. The gear 7 is secured to a shaft, 9, mounted in suitable bearings in the poise, I prefer to provide the poise with wheels 11, that are mounted loosely on the shaft 9 and bear upon the top of the beam at each side of the rack-teeth 3. These wheels support the weight of the poise, which would otherwise be borne by the gear 7. One end of the shaft 9 is provided with a pinion, 13, that meshes with an idler-pinion, 15. This idler meshes with a gear, 17, on ashort shaft, 19. The pinions 13 and 15 and the gear 17 are preferably inclosed by a plate, 21. The front or face of the plate has a central circular recess, 23,with a rim or ledge, 25, extending around it. Upon the face of the rim 25 are a series of figures,
- the material being weighed.
(No model.)
letters, or other characters that are preferably raised above the surface of the rim, as shown in Fig. 6. A
Upon the shaft 19 is a pointer, 27, that is preferably arranged to move within the recess 23. The plate 21 forms a dial, around which the pointer moves as the poise is moved over the beam, and the pointer is so arranged that the reading indicated by its position on the dial corresponds with the reading indicated by the position of the poise on the beam.
The end of the arrow-head on the pointer 27 is formed with knife-edges 29, that extend flush with the surface of the rim 25, and the back side of the pointer is formed with a bearing-block, 31, for a purpose hereinafter specitied.
A follower, 32, is mounted upon the poise, and is adapted to be moved against the dial by a lever, 33, that is fulcrumed upon a pin, 35, upon the poise. This lever is provided with a cam-surface, 37, that bears upon the follower. By depressing the lever the follower is moved against the dial. The follower is provided with recesses that fit over the corresponding raised characters on the dial. The follower and the dial thus fit together as male and female dies. The follower is provided with a pin, 41, that slides in a corresponding opening in the poise and keeps the follower in proper position to fit over the dial. Aspring, 43, surrounds this pin and tends to hold the follower away from the dial.
In using this device the poise is moved over the beam in the usual way until it balances The pointer will move over the dial as the poise is moved over the beam, and the reading on the dial will correspond with the reading on the beam. A ticket or slip of paper or other suitable material, 47, is then placed over the dial, and the follower is moved against it by thelever, thus pressing the ticket between the die-surfaces of the follower and dial and formingin theticket an impression corresponding to the dial. At the same time the ticket is pressed against the knife-edges on the pointer, and a cut is made in the ticket corresponding to the shape of the arrow-head. This cut will be opposite the figure or character indicating the weight represented by the position of the poise, and
the ticket will thus form a permanent record of the weight. As many duplicates of the ticket as desired may be made.
The means for operating the follower may be varied without departing from my invention.
It is only necessary that the follower and dial shall fit together like the two parts of a seal, and the raised figures or characters may be upon either the dial or follower and the corresponding depressions in the other.
The bearing-block on the pointer prevents -its being bent as the follower is pressed against it.
Instead of cutting through the ticket, the pointer may be arranged to form a suitable impression therein.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a scale-beam, of a poise mounted thereon, a dial on said poise provided with suitable figures or characters, a pointer arranged to move over said dial in unison with the movement of the poise on the beam, a follower, and means for moving said follower against the face of said dial, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a scale-beam and a poise, of a dial secured to said poise and having divisions corresponding with the divisions on the scale-beam, a pointer pivoted upon said dial, a wheel bearing upon the beam and adapted to be rotated as the poise is moved over the beam, a follower, and means for pressing said follower against said dial and pointer, for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination, with a scale-beam and poise, of a dial secured upon the poise and provided with raised characters, a pointer on said dial, means, substantially as described, for operating said pointer as said poise is moved, a follower, and means for moving said follower against said dial and pointer, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the scale-beam, of the poise, the dial on said poise having the raised characters, the pointer having the knifeedges 29, gearing, substantially as described, for movingsaid pointer as said poise is moved over the beam, the follower, and means for moving said follower against said dial and pointer, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand this 10th day of January, 1887.
EDMUND G. FISHER,
In presence of- A. (3. PAUL, R. H. SANFORD.
