2 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures OVERBOOT This invention relates to an overboot comprising a sleeve-like or tubular leg, an insole and a tread of thin flexible rubber fabric or cloth, the seams of which between the leg and the insole are covered by the upturned marginal portion of the tread which marginal portion is vulcanized to the leg, the or each seam of the leg being covered by a rubber strip vulcanized thereto, said overboot being provided with closing elements.
Such an overboot presents the advantage that it may be folded to a small package so that it requires little room and may easily be carried along and yet may easily and rapidly be put on over shoewear. Such overboots are particularly suitable for protecting wearers against strong, liquid or gaseous chemical substances. As they consist of thin sheetlike material they are small in weight so that wearing these overboots is not tiring.
An object of the invention overboots is to inconvenience wearers thereof as little as possible; that they can be firmly attached to the footwear; and that the risk of being damaged when used is as small as possible.
This is accomplished with the overboot according to the invention in that there are provided strips at both sides of the leg, said strips being secured to the leg over part of their width, the portions of said strips which are not secured to the leg being provided with the closing elements. The closing elements fastened in or to said strips may have any shape. They may consist for example of buckles adapted to be rapidly opened and closed, of a string or band laced through eyelets provided in the strips etc. The loose portions of the strips provided on the leg preferably are of such width that the leg material, after the boot has been put on, does not abut against the footwear. Clothes may be accommodated between said strips so that, after the closing of the closing elements, the footwear fits well over the clothes.
A preferred embodiment of the overboot according to the invention is characterized in that the front portion of the leg is provided with a reinforcing strip vulcanized thereto. When the overboot has been put on, this reinforcing strip closes the gap between the two strips provided on the leg and consequently the front of the overboot is considerably reinforced.
It is preferred, according to the invention, to provide at the location of the toe-cap a lip forming part of a plate-shaped cap reinforcement vulcanized to the toecap, said lip comprising a closing element. This closing element is preferably embodied such as to co-operate with the closing elements of the strips.
According to the invention the strips provided at both sides of the leg and serving to close the overboot may have a curved shape, the lower ends of the strips extending toward the lip projecting from .the toe-cap. If a string or band is used which is laced through eyelets or apertures in the strips and the lip also has an eyelet or aperture, the strips may have such a shape that the lowermost eyelet or aperture of each strip is located at The invention will be further explained below with reference to the accompanying drawings showing by way of example an embodiment of the overboot according to the invention.
The drawings show in FIG. 1 a side view of the overboot;
FIG. 2 a front view of said overboot;
FIG. 3 diagrammatically a longitudinal section through the lower part of said overboot, and
FIG. 4 a side view of the overboot when in use.
The overboot 1 shown in the drawings comprises a leg 2, an outsole or tread 3 and an insole 4 which are manufactured from so-called rubber or canvas fabric or cloth. The leg 2 preferably consists of one single piece of fabric the edge seams of which are situated at the front of the overboot and there are interconnected by a strip 5 likewise consisting of rubber fabric, said strip also serving as a reinforcing strip.
The insole 4 is connected at its peripheral marginal portion by a seam 6, formed by marginal portions of said insole and the lower marginal portion of the leg. The thread 3 is dimensioned such that the peripheral marginal portion thereof covers the seam 6 between the leg and the insole 4.
The leg 2 is provided at both sides with a strip 7 of such curved shape that its front portion extends in the direction of the toe-cap 8 of the overboot 1. Each strip 7 is fastened to the leg 2 along a portion 9 of the width of said strip. In the portions 10 which are not secured to the leg there are provided eyelets or apertures 11 for a string or band 12.
The toe-cap 8 of the overboot has a cap reinforcement 13 likewise consisting of rubber fabric. Said cap reinforcement 13 has a lip 14 in which there is also provided an eyelet or aperture 15 for the string or band 12. This eyelet or aperture 15 is situated at the same level as the two lowermost apertures I l of the strips 7.
As is apparent from FIG. 4 the portion of the leg 2 extending beyond the strips 7 in FIG. 1 is located between both strips when the overboot is in use, the reinforcing strip 5 closing the gap between said strips. The string or band 12 thereby passes from the eyelet or aperture 15 in the lip 14 of the toe-cap reinforcement 13 through the eyelets or apertures 11 of both strips 7, and, when the overboot is too large, the front portion of the overboot is drawn against the front portion of the tread of the wearers shoe. Consequently said overboot is firmly positioned and does not'cause any difficulties when worn. It is convenient in use as an overboot and a size corresponding with that of the footwear so that overboots of one single size can be used.
The overboot is manufactured on a last or mould, all parts of the overboot being placed on the last or mould in preferably non-vulcanized condition and being subembodiment described above and shown byway of example in the drawings, but that it may be modified in many ways without departing from the scope of the invention. The leg may, for example, consist of two or more parts instead of one single part. In that case all seams between said parts are covered with sealing or reinforcing strips. If desired one could also have the edge portions of said parts overlap one another. Instead of eyelets one may also use hooks for the provision of the string or band. Also other closing elements may be used, if required.
