- J. S. STRINGER.
UOFFBE POT.
. Patented Oct; 4, 1887.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR: I 'X W Q UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
J OSIAH- SPURGEON STRINGER, OF COLUMBIA, ALABAMA.
COFFEE-POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,827, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed June 26, 1884. Renewed November 26, 1886. Serial No. 219,967. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it 7 known that I, 'Josmrr SPURGEON STRINGER, of Columbia, in the county ofHenry and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Coffee-Pot, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved coffee-pot which is simple in construction, produces good coffee rapidly, and extracts all the aromatic and flavoring extracts from the pulverized or ground berries.
The invention consists in the combination, with a pot, of a filtering-bag in the same, which bag has a string secured to its top and bottom, by means of which string the bag can easily be reversed.
The invention further consists in the combination, with a pot, of a lid having an opening, a cup formed on the lid and over the opening, and a cup in the first-mentioned cup, the latter cup having a bottom opening which can be closed bya valve or plug.
The invention also consists in parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved coffee-pot is shown.
The pot A, which may be made cylindrical or tapering, has a handle, B, and a spout, C, the lower end of the spout being near the bottom of the pot. An annular band, D, is secured on the inner surface of the pot, at the top, to form an annular groove, D, along the top edge of the pot, which groove is to contain cold water for sealing the lid E and prevent ing any escape of steam. A filtering-bag, F, made of muslin or any other suitable material, is secured to a ring, G, fitting within the band- D, and having a ledge, G, adapted to rest on the upper edge of the band D and thus hold the filtering-bagin the pot. A button, H, projects from the inner surface of the ring G, which button serves as a handle for the ring. A string, I, is secured to the inner surface of the bottom of the bag, and is provided at its upper end with a loop which is passed over the button H. A ring, J, rests in the bottom art of the bag to keep it distended. On the middle of the top of the lid E a cup, L, having an open top, is formed, and in the middle of the lid E an opening, M, is formed, which is covered by the part N, preferably consisting of a few layers of fabric or a sponge. A cup, 0, which is slightly tapered or provided with an extension-bead, fits within the top of the cup L, and is provided with a lid, 1 A
transverse plate or ledge, Q, is secured in the cups 0, near the top. A small aperture, R, is made in the bottom of the cup 0, and may be closed by a plug, R, or other device, or may be left open. A tapering tube, S, projects downward from the lid E toward the middle of the pot, and on its lower end a cup, T, is secured, which is adapted to contain water, and thus form a seal to prevent the steam from rising up through the tube S.
The pot is used in the following manner: The ground or pulverized coffee is placed in the bag F, and then cold water is poured into the groove D. The lid Eis placed on the pot, the cup 0 is filled with cold water, and then hot water is poured through the tube S into the sack or bag F. The opening It in the cup 0 is preferably left open, so that a continuous stream of cold water can flow upon the cloth N, over the opening M in the cover E, whereby all steam that passes up through the layers of cloth or fabric is condensed. When the pot is tilted to pour out coffee, the ledge Q in the cup 0 prevents the water in the cup 0 from being poured out at the top. The cupO must be so placed that the ledge Q is on that side corresponding to the side from which the spout 0 projects.
The string I prevents the bag from passing into and stuffing the lower end of the spout O, and by means of the string the bag can easily be inverted to remove the grounds and clean the bag.
The pot can be used for preparing tea'as well as coffee. In place of the string I,a spring, chain, &c., may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the pot, of a filter ing-bag held therein, a ring in the lower part of said bag to hold it distended, and a string, 1, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the pot having a substantially central opening in the top com Inunicating with its interior, of the part N, partially obstructing said opening, and a waterreservoir above and communicating with the opening for delivering water thereto, substantially as set forth.
3. In a coffee-pot, the combination, with the ring G, of the filtering-bag F, secured on the same, and the string I, secured to the bottom of the bag and held by a button on the ring G, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with a cofiee-pot, of the ring G, the filtering-bag F, secured to the same, the string I, and the button H, secured on the inner surface of the ring, substantially as herein shown and described.
