Description

(No MoaL) S. ARNOLD.
DENTAL ARTIGULTOR. No. 370,445'. p Patented Sept. 27, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
SCHUYLER ARNOLD, CARO, MICHIGAN.
DENTAL ARTICULTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 370,445, dated September 2'7, 1887.
Application filed February 17, 1887. Serial No. 227,870. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SOHUYLER ARNOLD, of Caro, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Artieulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication.
Thisinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in articulators or jaw-sets for Obtaining correct articulation of artificial denture.
This invention consists in the peculiar con struction and arrangement of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, my invention is shown in perspective and longitudinal section, in which A represents the lower bar, to one end of which is secured a spring-bar, B. The upper `face of the bar A has formed in it a line-toothed rack, a, while the outer or free end of such bar terminates in a bite-plate, b. To the bar B is pivotally secured a bite-plate, c.
C is a dog or leg pivotally secured to the under side of the bar B, its lower end being designed to engage with the teeth of the rack a.
In practiee, the tendency of the spring of the bar B being to keep such bar closed upon thel bar A, the device is inserted in the mouth of the patient, the free ends of the bars spread apart until the natural and easy articulation is obtained, the leg C retaining the parts in such adjusted positions. rIhe device is then removed from the mouth, properly enveloped in wax or composition, and again inserted for obtaining the mold or impression of the jaw or jaws, as the case may be, and the arrangement of the denture can readily be tested without disturbing the articulation. From this point the dentist proceeds to build up the set.7 as in the ordinary manner.
The advantages attained in the use of a device of this character will readily present themselves to those skilled in dental surgery.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A dental articulator orjaw-set consisting of a base bar provided with an adjustable spring-bar, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. An articulator consisting of the lower bar, A,'provided with the bite-plate b and rack a, in combination with the spring-bar B, carrying a bite-plate, c, and pivoted leg C, the parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
SCHUYLER ARNOLD.
