Abstract

Although many different types of collapsible garment hangers have heretofore been known, none of such prior hangers had portions for supporting both a coat and trousers and yet be adapted to be collapsed into a most compact unit for storage or shipment when not in use. Such compact condition is especially desirable for the traveler who can pack such a hanger into one small space in his suitcase without taking up any significant space that could be used for clothes or the like.

It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a garment hanger for both a coat and trousers which is easily collapsible into a compact unit and which is just as easily assembled into operative position.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a garment hanger of the aforesaid type which is simple in construction, inexpensive, and easy to make.

Other objects and many of the attendant advantages of this invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. I is a side elevational view of a garment hanger embodying the present invention, said hanger being in operative position and showing a garment thereon.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the hanger of FIG. I.

FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the hanger of FIG. 2 in collapsed position.

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 2.

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of the hanger.

FIG. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of another modification of the hanger.

Referring now in greater detail to the various figures of the drawing wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts, there is shown a garment hanger, generally designated 10, having two angular arms, respectively designated 12 and 14. The arm 12 is provided with an eyelet 16 at one end and with an eyelet 18 at the opposite end. The eyelet 18 receives a rivet 20 having a head 22. Also mounted on the rivet 20 is an eyelet at one end of a cross-arm 24. Both eyelet 18 and the corresponding eyelet on arm 24 are rotatable on the rivet 20 and are held thereon by a lock washer 26.-

The arm 14 is also provided with an eyelet 28 at one end and an eyelet 30 at the other end. The eyelet 30 is mounted on a rivet 32 coaxial with an eyelet 34 on a cross-arm 36. A lock washer 38 holds the

30 and 34 in place between it and the head 40 of the rivet 32.

The cross-arms 24 and 36 are pivoted to each other by means of

corresponding eyelets

42 and 44 rotatably mounted on a rivet 46 between the rivet head 48 and a lock washer 50.

The

12, 14, 24 and 36 are adapted to be pivotally moved from the collapsed position shown in FIG. 3 to the extended or operative position shown in FIG. 2. In this extended position, the device is held in assembled condition by means of a hanger hook 52 having a hanger hook head 54 and a closure hook portion 56. The book portion 56 is merely inserted through the

16 and 28 and thereby holds the hanger unit assembled and ready for use.

When it is desired to collapse the garment hanger, it is merely necessary to remove the hook portion 56 from the

eyelets

16 and 28 and pivot the arms into the position shown in FIG. 3. The entire assembly, as shown in collapsed position in FIG. 3, including the loose hanger hook 52, may be easily encased in a thin bag made of polyethylene or any other desirable material.

In FIG. 5, there is shown a modified form of the device wherein all the parts are all the same except that the hanger hook 110, corresponding to hook 52, is .provided with a closure hook portion 1 12 which has an offset extension 114 with an upstanding flange 116 at its free end. The closure hook portion 112, thereby, not only acts as a closure means to keep the unit in assembled condition, but forms an additional hanging means, as at 114, which can be used to support another hanger, or another garment such as a shirt or the like.

FIG. 6 illustrates another modification of the device wherein the parts are all the same except that the hanger hook 210, corresponding to hanger hook 52, is pivoted to a rivet or the like indicated at 212. This rivet 212 is mounted on the free end of the angular arm 214 corresponding to arm 12. The arm 216 is provided with an eyelet adapted to be releasably engaged with the rivet 212. This construction permits the hanger hook 210 to be pivoted into collapsed condition, but'retains the entire unit in assembled form. There is no possibility of losing the hanger hook in this form of the device, although it makes the collapsed package somewhat more bulky.

The devices illustrated are constructed of metal rods or wire. However, they may equally as well be constructed of card-board or other relatively rigid types of paper, as well as of relatively rigid plastic material such as polyethylene, polyvinyl, polyesters, polyamides, acrylics or any polymeric substances which are feasible for the purpose.

The invention claimed is:

1. A collapsible garment hanger comprising two oppositely disposed angular arms, each of said arms being pivotally connected at one of their ends to a lateral cross-arm by means of respective pivot means, and having their other ends engageable with each other, said cross-arm comprising at least two sections which are pivotally connected to each other at their corresponding ends remote from their pivotal connections to said angular arms, by a pivot means having an axis that is substantially perpendicular to the axes of the pivot means connecting said angular arms to said cross-arm, and a hanger hook pivotally connectedto the ends of said angular arms which are engageable with each other.

2. The garment hanger of claim 1 wherein hanger hook is removable from lar arms.

3. The garment hanger of claim 1 wherein said hanger hook is permanently. connected to one of said angular arms.

4. The garment hanger of claim 1 wherein said hanger hook is providedwith a lateral extension coni ts connection with said angumeans.

Claims

1. A collapsible garment hanger comprising two oppositely disposed angular arms, each of said arms being pivotally connected at one of their ends to a lateral cross-arm by means of respective pivot means, and having their other ends engageable with each other, said cross-arm comprising at least two sections which are pivotally connected to each other at their corresponding ends remote from their pivotal connections to said angular arms, by a pivot means having an axis that is substantially perpendicular to the axes of the pivot means connecting said angular arms to said cross-arm, and a hanger hook pivotally connected to the ends of said angular arms which are engageable with each other.

2. The garment hanger of claim 1 wherein hanger hook is removable from its connection with said angular arms.

3. The garment hanger of claim 1 wherein said hanger hook is permanently connected to one of said angular arms.

4. The garment hanger of claim 1 wherein said hanger hook is provided with a lateral extension constructed and arranged to form an auxiliary hanging means.
